Google Lens is built into Google’s mobile apps and Chrome, so you do not install a separate Lens device. On Android, iPhone, and iPad, open the Google app or Chrome and tap the Lens icon to use your camera or a saved photo. In Chrome on a computer, use More > Search this tab with Google Lens or right-click the page. For Chrome website-image and screen-search actions, Google’s instructions require Google to be the browser’s default search engine.
This guide shows the exact path for each device and task, including webpage images, screen content, QR codes, barcodes, photo permissions, result refinement, and fixes when the Lens control is missing.

What Google Lens does and where it appears
Lens analyzes an image and can return information about objects, visually similar images, and websites containing the same or a similar image. You can search a whole photo or select a smaller area. Narrowing the selection to the object or detail that matters usually produces more specific results.

Before you start: apps, permissions, and search settings
Install or update the right app
On a phone or tablet, install the Google app or Chrome and update it through your platform’s app store. Google’s mobile image-search help lists the latest Google app as a requirement for its instructions. Chrome-based Lens controls likewise depend on a current Chrome build. Exact icon placement can vary by operating-system and app version.
Set Google as Chrome’s default search engine when required
Google specifically requires Google to be the default search engine for Chrome’s webpage-image Lens flow on Android and iPhone or iPad, for Chrome’s screen-search flow on iPhone or iPad, and for “Search this tab with Google Lens” on a computer. This is a requirement for those Chrome actions, not a claim that every Lens feature needs that setting. The Google app’s camera and gallery searches can be available independently.
Allow camera and photo access
When Lens asks for camera access, choose the option that lets the app use the camera while you scan. To use an existing image, grant photo access. On iPhone or iPad, review this at Settings > Apps > Google > Photos if a saved photo cannot be selected. You can change the permission later in iOS Settings.

Enable and use Google Lens on Android
Search with the camera
- Open the Google app or Chrome.
- Tap the Lens icon in the search bar.
- Point the camera at the object, text, plant, product, landmark, or other subject you want to investigate.
- Take the picture when the subject is in view.
- On the results screen, drag the selection handles or otherwise select the relevant part of the image.
- Review the returned object matches, similar images, and webpages.
If the first result is too broad, select a smaller region around the exact object or detail. For example, selecting one symbol on a sign is more precise than selecting the entire street scene.
Search a saved photo
- Open the Google app or Chrome and tap the Lens icon in the search bar.
- Choose the gallery or image-upload control.
- Select the existing photo on your device.
- Adjust the selection to the object or area you want to search.
- Read the visual matches and open any relevant result.
The same Lens entry point can therefore handle a new camera capture and an image already stored on the phone; you do not need a separate Lens installation.
Search an image on a webpage
- Open the page containing the image in the Google app or Chrome.
- Touch and hold the image.
- Choose Search image with Google Lens (the wording can be shortened or slightly rearranged in a newer interface).
- Select a smaller part of the image if you want to isolate one object.
- Review the Lens results.
For this website-image action in Chrome, Google says Google must be selected as the default search engine. If the menu item is missing, check that setting first, then update Chrome.

Scan a QR code or barcode in Chrome
- Open a new Chrome tab.
- Tap Lens.
- Point the camera at the QR code. When a link appears, follow it only if you recognize and trust the destination.
- For a barcode, capture a search image and review the relevant results.
Enable and use Google Lens on iPhone and iPad
Use the camera or a saved photo in the Google app or Chrome
- Open the Google app or Chrome.
- Tap Lens in the search bar.
- Take a picture with the camera, or choose the control for selecting an existing image.
- Pick a photo from the camera roll when prompted.
- Highlight the object or detail to search, then inspect the results.
Google also documents choosing a saved photo through Safari. If the Google app or Chrome cannot see your library, open iOS permissions at Settings > Apps > Google > Photos and allow the required level of access.
Search an image on a website
- Open the webpage in the Google app or Chrome.
- Touch and hold the image.
- Choose the image-search action offered by the menu, such as the Lens option.
- Refine the selection if the page contains several objects or a busy background.
Chrome’s website-image search requires Google to be the default search engine. The Google app can present its own image-search controls, so do not treat this Chrome requirement as a universal Lens requirement.
Search what is currently on screen in Chrome
- Open the target website in Chrome.
- Tap the Lens icon beside the address bar, or open More > Search Screen with Google Lens.
- Select or highlight the image, video, text, or other area you want to investigate.
- Review the Lens results and refine the selection if necessary.
Google’s iPhone Chrome instructions say Google must be the default search engine for this screen-search flow. This feature is useful when the page does not expose a convenient image context menu or when you want to search text and imagery together.

Scan a QR code or barcode in Chrome
- Open a new Chrome tab and tap Lens.
- Aim the camera at the QR code or barcode.
- Tap the link or result that appears after checking that it leads where you expect.
Use Google Lens in Chrome on a computer
- Open the webpage in Chrome.
- Choose More > Search this tab with Google Lens. You can also right-click the page and choose Search this tab with Google Lens.
- When the Lens overlay appears, select the area of the page you want to search.
- Read the results in the Lens panel or search box.
- Ask a question about the page content in the Lens search box or side panel when that option is shown.
Google says to set Google as Chrome’s default search engine for this computer flow. The search can cover a selected image, text, or another visible region rather than requiring you to save a screenshot first.

Crop to the meaningful detail
Lens can recognize a whole scene, but a large image may contain several possible subjects. Select the smallest useful area: a single shoe rather than the entire outfit, one line of text rather than a full poster, or one plant leaf rather than the complete garden. Google specifically notes that choosing a smaller area can make results more specific.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse a clear, well-framed image
Move closer, avoid glare, and keep the subject in focus before capturing a camera image. For a saved photo, select the original image when possible instead of a compressed screenshot. These steps do not change Lens settings; they simply give the visual search more information to match.

Try more than one selection
If the first selection returns similar-looking objects instead of the exact item, reduce it to a distinctive logo, label, pattern, or text line. If that loses context, expand the selection slightly and compare the results.

For Lens searches of Chrome webpage content, Google’s help documentation says a screenshot and page data are sent to help select objects. Google also says that, as a result of this particular query flow, the page or image is not used for training and is kept only temporarily for processing that query. This is Google’s description of the documented Chrome Lens flow; it is not a blanket privacy statement for every Google image or camera feature.
Avoid sending confidential documents, private conversations, authentication codes, or other sensitive material unless you are comfortable with the service’s handling of that query. QR results can open external websites, so check the destination before following a link.

Quick Recap
Troubleshoot a missing or nonworking Lens control
| Symptom | What to check | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| No Lens icon in the mobile search bar | Install or update the Google app or Chrome, then reopen it. | Google’s mobile instructions require the current Google app, and app interfaces vary by version. |
| Chrome does not offer “Search image with Google Lens” | Set Google as Chrome’s default search engine for that website-image flow; update Chrome and try touching the image again. | Google lists the default-search-engine setting for this action. |
| Chrome screen search is absent on iPhone or iPad | Use the Lens icon beside the address bar or More > Search Screen with Google Lens, and confirm Google is the default search engine. | Those are the documented entry points and prerequisite for the iPhone Chrome flow. |
| “Search this tab with Google Lens” is missing on a computer | Update Chrome, open the page directly, then try More or the page’s right-click menu. Confirm Google is the default search engine. | The computer feature is exposed through those two menus and uses the default-search setting. |
| A saved iPhone photo cannot be selected | Open Settings > Apps > Google > Photos and grant access, then return to Lens. | The Google app needs permission to read the camera roll. |
| Results are vague or unrelated | Select a smaller, sharper area around the object or text and search again. | Lens can produce more specific results when the selection is narrowed. |
| QR or barcode scan does not produce a result | Open a new tab, tap Lens, fill the frame with the code, and improve lighting or focus. | The documented mobile Chrome path starts from a new tab and uses the camera view. |
Which Lens path should you use?
