Google launched Universal Cart in the United States on October 15, 2026, bringing products from multiple retailers into one persistent shopping cart across Google Search and the Gemini app. The cart can monitor prices and inventory, surface relevant promotions and payment benefits, and let shoppers either pay with Google Pay or continue on a retailer’s website.
What Google Universal Cart does
Universal Cart is designed to replace separate retailer tabs, saved screenshots and disconnected wish lists with one cart that follows the shopper across Google’s services. A product saved in Search can remain in the cart when the shopper later opens Gemini, even if the cart contains items from several different retailers.

How the cart works
One cart across retailers and Google surfaces
After a shopper adds an eligible product, Universal Cart keeps it available for later review. The cart is intended for multi-store purchases, so a shopper could collect items for a project or holiday gift list without maintaining a separate cart at every retailer. At launch, the cross-service experience covers Google Search and Gemini in the U.S.; Google previously said YouTube and Gmail would follow, but those surfaces are not part of the confirmed launch scope.

Price, inventory and deal monitoring
Google says Gemini models work in the background after an item is added. They can watch for a price drop, check for a restock, show price-history context and identify applicable promo codes. Google also says Universal Cart can use Google Wallet information—such as card benefits, loyalty details and merchant offers—to help identify a potentially better way to pay.
These are Google’s product claims. The launch announcement does not provide independent accuracy tests, a guaranteed savings amount or an alert-time guarantee, so shoppers should verify the final price and terms before submitting an order.

Compatibility suggestions
Google’s example is a custom PC build: if products in a cart appear incompatible, Universal Cart can flag the problem and suggest alternatives. Google presents this as Gemini-powered assistance rather than a replacement for checking specifications, return policies and manufacturer requirements yourself.

Google’s May announcement also described plans to expand UCP checkout to Canada and Australia in the following months, then the United Kingdom, and to bring UCP to YouTube in the U.S. and other categories such as hotel booking and local food delivery. Those statements are rollout plans, not confirmation that every expansion has completed.

- It does not make Google the seller. Google says the brand remains the merchant of record in both checkout paths.
- It does not guarantee the lowest price, a valid coupon or continued inventory. Final availability and terms belong to the retailer.
- It does not eliminate the need to review shipping charges, taxes, delivery dates, return rules and subscriptions before paying.
- At launch, it is not a worldwide feature: the confirmed availability is U.S.-only and limited to Search and Gemini.
How it compares with ordinary retailer carts
A retailer-native cart generally offers the deepest control over that retailer’s catalog, fulfillment choices and account history. Universal Cart’s distinction is breadth: it is designed to persist across merchants and Google surfaces while adding automated monitoring and Wallet-aware payment suggestions. The trade-off is that merchant coverage, country availability and feature behavior can vary, and the retailer still controls fulfillment, returns and support.
