Those improvements are documented by Google, and its October 2026 benchmark results are Google’s own evaluations—not independent tests. The gains do not guarantee that every image, character or instruction will come out correctly.
What is Nano Banana 2.1?
Nano Banana 2.1 is Google’s image-generation and conversational-editing model, not a physical product. Google AI for Developers describes it as its latest high-efficiency model for generating images and editing them through conversation. Its API model ID is gemini-nano-banana-2.1. The developer documentation was last updated October 6, 2026 UTC, and Google DeepMind published the model card in October 2026.

Google lists availability through the Gemini app, Google AI Studio, Gemini API, Google Search AI Mode, Google Ads, Google Flow and Google Stitch. Features and access can differ between services, so check the interface you plan to use rather than assuming every model capability is available in every product. Google says downstream providers can access its models through an API; it does not require particular hardware or software to use the model.
What Google says has improved
Google documents improved visual quality and realism, stronger prompt adherence, better text rendering and more accurate infographic layouts. It also says the model addresses tiling artifacts in wide and panoramic images at 2K and 4K resolution. Supported output sizes are 1K, 2K and 4K, with 1K as the default.
For wider images, Google lists panoramic aspect ratios of 1:4, 4:1, 1:8 and 8:1. The claimed improvements do not mean small lettering or long text will always be legible; Google’s model card notes important text-rendering limits below.
More reference images and editing controls
Nano Banana 2.1 can combine up to 14 reference images. Google specifies character consistency for up to four characters and object fidelity for up to ten objects. It also supports Google Web and Image Search grounding, and a configurable Thinking setting: minimal, medium (the default) or high.

The API accepts text, images, video and PDFs as inputs, and produces images and text. Google lists image generation, Search grounding and Thinking as supported; audio generation and function calling are not. Generated images include a SynthID watermark.
What Google’s benchmark results show
Google DeepMind’s October 2026 model card reports the following Elo results. Google describes its image-generation and editing Elo results as coming from side-by-side human evaluations. These are Google’s evaluations, not independent comparisons; a category score is not proof of universal superiority.

The reported results favor Nano Banana 2.1 in these categories, including multi-character consistency and multi-reference editing. Google also reports using a single-sided AutoRater for factuality. The table is best read as evidence of performance on those specific evaluations, not a guarantee that 2.1 will outperform the other models for every prompt or workflow.
What can still go wrong
Google’s model card says small text—especially at 1K resolution—long paragraphs and page-length text may render poorly. Character identity can also drift between reference images and generated results, so the stated consistency capability is not a guarantee.

- Masked or doodle-based edits may follow instructions only partly, or leave ink marks in the result.
- An edit can sometimes preserve the input subject’s pose when a different pose was requested.
- The model may confuse spatial directions such as left and right.
- Google notes limits in advanced world knowledge, 3D reasoning and factuality, as well as possible hallucinations, slow responses and timeouts.
For practical use, inspect lettering, character identity, spatial arrangements and fact-heavy images before publishing or relying on them. That review is particularly important when the image needs accurate labels, diagrams or multiple recognizable subjects.
How to choose between Nano Banana 2.1, Nano Banana 2 and Nano Banana Pro
Google positions Nano Banana 2.1 as a high-efficiency option and Nano Banana Pro as its premium choice for complex visual work. The model card’s category-by-category results show why the best choice depends on the task: 2.1 leads the listed evaluations, while the difference between models varies by category. Consider the specific capability you need—text rendering, editing, character consistency or reference fidelity—and whether your preferred Google service exposes the relevant controls.
