The right fit depends less on a feature count than on how you want to capture, organize and keep access to your notes.

Choose Google Keep for quick capture and simple lists
Keep is suited to jotting something down, making a list or setting a reminder without first building a detailed filing system. Google describes it as an online notes and digital notebook-list tool, and says notes remain updated offline, with changes syncing when the device reconnects. Keep can also export notes to Google Docs. Those features make it a natural option if your priority is lightweight capture and you already use Google services. Google Keep product page.
What happens when you move notes out of Keep
Google supports exporting and downloading Keep data. For a documented route into Obsidian, export with Google Takeout and use Obsidian’s Importer plugin. That does not preserve every Keep behavior: the importer guide says checklist indentation is not exported, and reminders and user assignments are not imported as such. An export being available is not the same as a complete transfer of the original app’s features. Google Keep export help and Obsidian’s Keep import guide.

What Google documents about Keep data
Google’s privacy help says attached files such as photos and voice-note audio are stored in its data centers; information accessed offline is stored on the device; and Google collects performance data to improve reliability and troubleshoot issues. That description does not establish that Keep is end-to-end encrypted, nor does it support a broader comparison of the apps’ privacy protections. Google Keep privacy help.
Choose OneNote for notebooks, sections and pages
OneNote’s structure resembles a binder: notebooks contain sections, and sections contain pages. That is a good fit if you prefer to keep related material together in named containers or already work in Microsoft’s ecosystem. Microsoft says supported OneNote versions are free to download and use, while certain premium features can be unlocked with an optional Office 2019 or Microsoft 365 subscription. Check sync when collaborating or switching devices
Synchronization depends on settings and circumstances. Microsoft says that if automatic notebook synchronization is turned off, other people will not see changes until it is turned back on. On Windows, working with an offline file can also mean changes sync to a local cache rather than the server copy. Check the notebook’s sync status if recent edits are missing or collaborators cannot see them. Microsoft’s OneNote sync help.
OneNote to Obsidian: export options vary
Obsidian documents both account-based import and file-based import for OneNote. The file route uses OneNote Package (.onepkg) or section (.one) files, and Obsidian’s guide says exporting those formats is available in OneNote for Windows, the Microsoft 365 desktop app—not the Mac app or the older OneNote for Windows 10 app. Work or school accounts may require organizational approval; account-based import only includes notebooks owned by the signed-in account. Choose Obsidian for local Markdown and linked notes
Obsidian stores notes as Markdown-formatted plain-text files in a local vault folder. You can manage those files with other text editors and file managers as well as Obsidian. This is a strong fit if you want direct access to your notes as files and are comfortable maintaining a folder-based system. Obsidian documents its own Sync service as well as third-party sync approaches including Dropbox, iCloud, OneDrive and Git. Obsidian’s data storage documentation.
Links and graph tools support a knowledge system
Obsidian’s built-in core features include backlinks, Graph view, daily notes, search, Canvas and templates. Backlinks show notes that link to or mention the current note; Graph view visualizes relationships among notes. These tools can help connect ideas, but they do not create a useful knowledge base by themselves: you decide what to link and how to organize it. Core plugins, Backlinks and Graph view.

Plan sync and backup separately
Obsidian Sync is optional and requires a subscription. Its current plan documentation lists Standard and Plus limits for vault counts, file size, storage and version history; consult the live page for the applicable limits rather than relying on figures that may change. Obsidian explicitly recommends keeping a backup system and says a sync service is not a backup. Obsidian Sync plans and storage limits and Obsidian Sync setup.

- Pick Keep if the main job is capturing a thought, list or reminder quickly and you are comfortable with a Google account-based workflow.
- Pick OneNote if you think in notebooks, sections and pages, or want notes alongside a Microsoft-centered workflow. Confirm your version and sync setup before relying on a feature or export route.
- Pick Obsidian if you want your notes in inspectable local Markdown files and expect to link ideas into a personal knowledge base. Be prepared to choose an organization and sync approach.
If portability is the deciding factor, distinguish file access from full feature migration. Obsidian’s Markdown files are directly inspectable, but app-specific links, metadata, attachments and configuration may need attention when moving to another tool. Keep and OneNote both have documented paths into Obsidian, but their import guides describe limitations that matter if you depend on reminders, assignments, list indentation, account ownership or a particular OneNote export format.

Moving between the apps
Google Keep to Obsidian
- Use Google Takeout to export your Keep data, following Google’s export help.
- In Obsidian, use the Importer plugin and its Google Keep import instructions.
- Before relying on the imported vault, check notes that used checklist indentation, reminders or user assignments; those details do not transfer as Keep-specific behavior in this documented workflow.
OneNote to Obsidian
- Review Obsidian’s OneNote import guide and identify whether you will import through a Microsoft account or files.
- For file import, confirm that your installed OneNote version can export the required
.onepkgor.onefiles. The guide specifies OneNote for Windows, the Microsoft 365 desktop app, for these exports. - If you use a work or school account, check whether your organization must approve access. For account-based import, confirm that the notebooks you need are owned by the signed-in account.
Obsidian files to another tool
Markdown gives you direct access to note text outside Obsidian, but do not assume that every app-specific link, property, attachment or vault setting will have an equivalent in the destination app. Review those elements as part of a move. Obsidian’s data storage documentation.
