Google Is Putting Ads Inside AI Overviews—and Testing Them in AI Mode

Google is putting sponsored placements into AI Overviews and testing conversational ads in AI Mode. The formats are distinct, advertiser controls are limited, and no cited study measures ad-specific annoyance or trust effects.

Google is placing sponsored results inside some AI-generated Search experiences. Ads can appear within AI Overviews when Google detects commercial intent and finds a relevant eligible ad. Google is also testing newer ad formats embedded in its conversational AI Mode. That is materially different from ordinary text ads, because the sponsored material can sit inside—or answer—the generated response itself.

The criticism that this makes an already frustrating feature more intrusive is understandable, but the available evidence does not establish how annoying users find these ads specifically. Google’s announcements describe the formats as useful and clearly labeled; those are company claims, not independent measurements.

AI Overviews and AI Mode are different products

Google uses “AI Search” as an umbrella for several experiences. The two relevant surfaces have different interfaces and rollout statuses.

Surface Where ads appear Google’s status description What is established
AI Overviews Inside an AI-generated summary displayed in standard Search results Ads were expanding and eligible existing campaigns could enter the auction Google’s Ads Help says ads may show when a query has commercial intent and a relevant, quality ad can be matched to the Overview
AI Mode Integrated into a conversational, Gemini-built Search response New formats announced as tests in May 2026 Google says the formats remain labeled “Sponsored”; broad availability and exposure frequency are not established

These are not interchangeable names for one ad unit. An Overview is a summary layered onto a conventional results page. AI Mode is a conversational Search experience in which the user continues a dialogue and receives generated answers.

How advertising works in AI Overviews

When an ad can appear

Google’s Ads Help says AI Overviews tend to be triggered by complex questions that do not have one obvious answer. For a subset of those queries, Google may show an ad when it detects commercial intent and can match an eligible, relevant ad to the query and the Overview.

#1 Best Overall
Google Pixel 10a - 30+ Hours Battery, Camera Coach, Gemini - Obsidian 128GB
  • Google Pixel 10a is a durable, everyday phone with more[1]; snap brilliant photography on a simple, powerful camera, get 30+ hours out of a full charge[2], and do more with helpful AI like Gemini[3]
  • Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan; it works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers
  • Pixel 10a is sleek and durable, with a super smooth finish, scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass 7i display, and IP68 water and dust protection[4]
  • The Actua display with 3,000-nit peak brightness shows up clear as day, even in direct sunlight[5]
  • Plan, create, and get more done with help from Gemini, your built-in AI assistant[3]; have it screen spam calls while you focus[6]; chat with Gemini to brainstorm your meal plan[7], or bring your ideas to life with Nano Banana[8]

The ads do not require a special “AI Overview campaign.” Google says existing eligible Search, Shopping and Performance Max ads can enter the auction. The May 2025 announcement described expansion to desktop in the United States, planned English-language expansion to selected countries, and eligibility involving Performance Max, Shopping and qualifying broad-match Search campaigns, including AI Max. Those details were a dated rollout snapshot, not a guarantee of availability in every account or country today.

Advertisers cannot choose the placement directly

Google says advertisers cannot target ads only to AI Overviews and cannot opt out of serving there. Its current reporting also does not segment impressions or other results specifically for Search AI Overview placements. An advertiser can control campaign settings and eligibility at a broader level, but cannot request “AI Overviews only,” exclude only that surface, or inspect a dedicated AI Overview performance line in reporting.

That lack of controls matters to both sides: advertisers cannot independently evaluate the placement, while users have no indication that a particular ad was selected through a separately disclosed AI-Overview marketplace.

What Google is testing in AI Mode

Conversational Discovery ads

In its May 20, 2026 announcement, Google described Conversational Discovery ads as a format that can answer a searcher’s question within the AI Mode interaction.

Highlighted Answers

Google also described Highlighted Answers, in which a sponsored answer can appear in a list of recommendations. The announcement characterized both formats as tests rather than a completed global launch.

Labels and integration

Google says these ads remain labeled “Sponsored.” Its product language presents the ads as relevant and integrated into AI-generated responses. In the company’s own words: “While clearly labeled as an ad, new formats are integrated directly into AI-generated responses, bringing attention to your offer while staying relevant to the consumer search.” That sentence is Google’s product description, not an independent finding that users understand the label or welcome the integration.

Why the placements feel more intrusive than a normal ad

A conventional search ad is usually recognizable as a separate result with a visible boundary. An ad inside a generated summary or conversational answer can resemble the surrounding explanatory text, recommendations or answer flow, even when a “Sponsored” label is present. The commercial message is therefore closer to the point at which Google is interpreting the user’s question.

That design creates a trust question: can people quickly distinguish Google’s generated explanation from a paid recommendation, and do they understand why that recommendation appeared? The sources available here do not provide a measured answer about label comprehension, ad frequency or annoyance.

What independent evidence says about AI Search

The 2026 preregistered experiment

A preregistered field experiment with 1,100 Google Search participants, submitted to arXiv on August 18, 2026 by Wang, Gleason, Bart, Wilson and Metaxa, compared different AI Search conditions. Its abstract reports that hiding AI Overviews and AI Mode increased publisher click-through. An AI Mode-only condition reduced publisher click-through and eroded reported experience and trust in information found on Google.

  • Google Pixel 8a designed with a 6.1-inch Actua OLED display, delivering improved brightness, enhanced outdoor visibility, and smoother color rendering in a compact and lightweight form factor.

This is evidence about AI Search conditions overall, not an ad-versus-no-ad experiment. It cannot show that advertisements caused the reported decline in trust, and it does not measure how annoying users found sponsored placements.

Google’s account of organic traffic

In an August 6, 2025 post, Google Search vice president Liz Reid said aggregate organic click volume was relatively stable year over year, quality clicks had increased slightly, and traffic was shifting among sites. She also noted that some searches seeking a quick answer may end without a click. These are Google’s aggregate claims and use a different method and scope from the preregistered experiment.

What Google’s shopping survey does—and does not—show

Google’s May 2026 announcement cited a Google-commissioned Ipsos survey in which 75% of respondents said AI Mode helped them make faster, more confident decisions. The online survey was conducted in December 2025 and included 13,189 adults in selected countries. Respondents were online shoppers who had made a considered consumer-goods purchase in the previous week and had used AI Overviews and/or AI Mode for shopping; the results were not weighted to population size.

That sample can describe the selected shopping users surveyed, but it is not a representative poll of all Search users and is not a measure of whether ads are irritating, whether labels are understood, or whether sponsored answers change trust.

What is known, and what is still unknown

  • Known from Google’s documentation: eligible Search, Shopping and Performance Max ads may appear in some AI Overviews when commercial intent and relevance conditions are met.
  • Known from Google’s advertiser guidance: advertisers cannot directly target or opt out of AI Overview placements, and reporting does not currently isolate those placements.
  • Announced but still described as tests: Conversational Discovery ads and Highlighted Answers in AI Mode.
  • Not independently established: the share of searches that show these ads, how often a user sees them, whether people reliably distinguish generated copy from sponsored content, and how annoying the formats are.
  • Not shown by the cited experiment: that ads themselves caused lower trust or fewer publisher clicks.

How to interpret the “stuffing ads” criticism

There is a factual basis for saying Google is monetizing AI-generated Search surfaces: sponsored placements are documented in AI Overviews, and Google has announced tests that put sponsored answers or recommendations into AI Mode. Calling that “stuffing” is a judgment about density and presentation, not a measured finding about every user’s experience.

The strongest defensible criticism is narrower. Google is inserting commercial content into an answer format that users may approach as an explanation, while giving advertisers no AI-Overview-only opt-out and no placement-specific reporting. Whether the labels and separation are sufficient is an open user-trust question, not something settled by Google’s helpfulness claims or by the existing independent study.
