Chrome’s newer AI features do more than answer questions: Gemini can work with the page you are viewing, compare information across tabs, and—through the separate Auto browse feature—carry out some web tasks with your oversight. But availability is uneven. As of Google’s feature information checked August 18, 2026, Auto browse is limited to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the United States, some announced tools are still marked “Coming soon,” and Android features are rolling out to select phones.
Here’s what each feature does, what it does not do, and how to tell whether it is available to you.
What’s available in Chrome—and what is still limited?
Google’s 2026 Chrome AI announcements describe a mix of browser assistance, search, image tools, automation, and background security. They are not all the same feature, and an announcement does not mean every Chrome user can use it today.
| Feature | Main job | Availability qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Gemini in Chrome and its side panel | Answer questions about browsing context, including supported page and multi-tab tasks | Requires an eligible signed-in account and is subject to region and rollout. Google lists Gemini in Chrome as a benefit of AI Pro and Ultra; its consumer page also describes access and rollout qualifications. |
| Auto browse | Navigate and interact with websites to complete multistep tasks | Google describes desktop access as limited to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the U.S. Android access began rolling out to select phones in late June 2026. |
| Nano Banana | Generate or edit images through Gemini in Chrome | Subject to rollout and account eligibility; Google does not say every user has it. |
| Skills | Reuse saved prompts as one-click workflows | Desktop availability is subject to support and rollout. |
| Pointer-based selection | Select a particular page element and ask Gemini about it | Google’s consumer feature page labels this “Coming soon,” despite its appearance in the I/O 2026 developer announcement. |
| AI Mode | Explore complex questions through conversational search | Access depends on Google’s availability and account rules; it is a search experience, not the same as page-aware Gemini. |
| AI scam detection | Add detection signals to Chrome Safe Browsing | Some detection uses on-device Gemini Nano; the tech-support-scam signal flow described by Google applies to users who opt into Enhanced Protection. |

What is Gemini in Chrome?
Gemini in Chrome is built into the browser rather than installed as a third-party extension. Its distinguishing feature is browsing context: where enabled, it can help interpret the page in front of you and information across multiple open tabs. That makes it different from opening a separate chatbot and manually copying in text. Google introduced the contextual browser assistant alongside AI Mode and other Chrome AI features in its Chrome announcement.
Useful page-level tasks
- Summarize a long article or explain a technical passage in simpler language.
- Pull out specific details such as deadlines, prices, ingredients, requirements, or an argument’s main points.
- Turn reading into flashcards, review questions, or a concise study sheet.
For example, on a long policy page you might ask, “List the eligibility requirements and deadlines, and cite the section headings they came from.” Treat the answer as a shortcut to the source, not a replacement for checking it—especially when a missed condition has financial, legal, health, or work consequences.
Research across tabs and Google services
Where the feature and account support it, Gemini can compare information from several tabs—for instance, product specifications from manufacturer and retailer pages, or details from travel and event pages. Google also describes connected-app workflows involving Gmail, Calendar, YouTube, Maps, Google Shopping, and Google Flights. A conference-planning task could involve checking an email for dates, reviewing flight options, and preparing a draft message. That example depends on supported integrations and account access; it is not a promise that every user has every connection enabled. Google describes these workflows in its Chrome and Gemini update.
Gemini in Chrome is not the same as the standalone Gemini site or app: those are separate destinations and do not necessarily have the same browser context or controls. Nor is ordinary Gemini assistance autonomous website control; that is the role of Auto browse.

How the Gemini side panel changes browsing
The side panel keeps Gemini available while you work in another tab. Instead of switching to a separate chatbot, you can ask it to compare pages, summarize reviews, or help organize information gathered across browsing and supported Google apps. Google positions the panel as a way to maintain that continuity while working on the web.
- Benefit: Less copying and tab switching when a task spans several sources.
- Trade-off: Context is what makes the feature useful, so consider which page or tab information you are asking an AI service to process.
- Boundary: Summarizing or comparing is not the same as sending a message, changing an account, or buying something. Those actions belong to the more consequential Auto browse workflow and need closer review.
What Auto browse can do—and where it pauses
Auto browse is Chrome’s agentic mode: rather than only suggesting what to do, Gemini can navigate and interact with websites during a multistep task. Google’s examples include finding in-stock items, booking parking, planning a party, and updating orders. The capability is not unrestricted, and a user should not treat it as a hands-off replacement for checking a transaction.
Controls and safety checks
Google says Auto browse provides a work log, lets the user pause or take over, and asks for confirmation before sensitive or consequential actions. It may require confirmation on certain banking or medical sites and before signing in through Google Password Manager. Purchases, payments, messages, and similar actions require a human checkpoint. Google also describes checks for indirect prompt injection—malicious or manipulative instructions embedded in page content—in its agentic-browsing security explanation. Those safeguards reduce risk; they do not guarantee that an agent will interpret a page or your request correctly.
A sensible first trial is a reversible task, such as collecting options or locating an item. Watch the work log, correct misunderstandings early, and personally inspect any booking, message, order, or account change before approving it. Websites can change, goals can be ambiguous, and deceptive page content remains a risk even when defenses are in place.

Who can use it
Google’s Chrome feature page describes desktop Auto browse as available to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the U.S. Google said Android access began rolling out to select phones at the end of June 2026. Google also said desktop Auto browse would be integrated with Gemini Spark “in the coming months”; that forward-looking statement should not be read as confirmation that the integration is generally available. See Google’s current Chrome availability page for the latest status.
Nano Banana: image generation and editing in Chrome
Nano Banana is Google’s image-generation and editing capability inside Gemini in Chrome. Google says users can transform an image they are viewing without first downloading it and uploading it elsewhere, or create visuals from page content. Examples include adapting an image for a room-design concept, editing part of an image, or turning research into an infographic. The feature appears among Google’s Chrome I/O 2026 updates.
These are generated outputs, not reliable factual illustrations by default. Inspect edits for altered details, misleading representation, and errors before using them in professional, legal, medical, educational, or factual material.
Skills turn recurring prompts into workflows
Skills let users save a useful Gemini prompt and rerun it as a one-click workflow. Google’s examples include summarizing reviews, checking return policies, getting sizing help, building side-by-side product comparisons, and scanning long documents for key information. They are most useful when the task repeats and the desired output is consistent—for example, checking the same return-policy details for each store. Skills are described in Google’s I/O 2026 Chrome update; availability remains subject to rollout.
Selecting a page element to ask about
Pointer-based selection is intended to let you choose a specific paragraph, image, or product and ask Gemini a focused question, without writing a long description of what you mean. That could make a question about one item in a crowded comparison page clearer than asking about the page as a whole. Status matters: although Google’s I/O developer post describes the capability, its consumer page currently labels it “Coming soon.” Do not assume it is enabled in your Chrome installation.
AI Mode is conversational search, not page analysis
AI Mode brings Google’s conversational search experience into Chrome. It is aimed at complex, multipart searches and follow-up exploration, rather than only a short keyword query. Gemini in Chrome, by contrast, is the browser assistant for understanding a page, tabs, and supported app context. Auto browse performs web actions; Nano Banana works with images; Skills reuse prompts.
| Tool | Primary job |
|---|---|
| Gemini in Chrome | Understand the current page, tabs, and supported Google-app context |
| AI Mode | Answer complex search questions and support follow-up exploration |
| Auto browse | Carry out multistep website interactions, with checkpoints for consequential actions |
| Nano Banana | Generate or edit images |
| Skills | Reuse saved prompts and workflows |
Google’s original Chrome AI announcement discusses AI Mode as part of its broader browser changes.
Chrome’s AI security features work in the background
Chrome’s AI security work is separate from the Gemini assistant you open to ask questions. Google says Chrome 137 added an on-device Gemini Nano layer for tech-support-scam detection: when certain triggers appear, Chrome can analyze page content locally, extract security signals, and send those signals to Safe Browsing for a final verdict. Google says the LLM-derived signals are sent to Safe Browsing only for users who have opted into Enhanced Protection. That specific local analysis does not mean every Gemini in Chrome interaction or connected-app workflow happens on-device. Details are in Google’s technical explanation of scam detection.

Google also describes AI-based detection for fake-virus pages, fake giveaways, deceptive notifications, and other social-engineering attacks in its Chrome security feature overview. Google has reported that its systems block around three billion unwanted website notifications per day; that is Google’s own reported figure, not an independently verified measurement.
AI adds a detection layer, not immunity. Keep Safe Browsing protections enabled, be wary of unexpected requests for payment or credentials, and review site permissions. Security tools cannot make every malicious page harmless.

On desktop
- Sign in to Chrome with an eligible Google Account.
- Update Chrome to the latest version for your operating system. Google does not give one universal version number for all Gemini in Chrome access.
- Look for the Gemini icon at the top of the browser and select it to open the feature, if it is available to your account and region.
On Android
- Update Chrome and check whether your device and account are included in the rollout.
- Select the Gemini icon in the upper-right area of the Chrome toolbar.
- When Gemini opens at the bottom of the screen, ask about the current webpage or request a summary.
Google describes Android availability as dependent on device, country, language, and age, with its 2026 features rolling out to select phones from late June. Android and iOS should not be assumed to have identical features or release timing. See Google’s Android Chrome announcement.
If the icon or a feature is missing
- Check that Chrome is updated, you are signed in, and the feature is offered in your country and language.
- Gemini in Chrome is unavailable in Incognito mode.
- A work or school administrator may need to enable the feature for a managed account. Workspace policies, Chrome profiles, and managed devices can affect access.
- Some features may be restricted in virtualized environments.
- For Auto browse, check the separate subscription and regional requirements; ordinary Gemini access does not guarantee agent access.
- Allow for staggered rollouts: Google’s developer announcements and consumer availability page may not show the same status at the same time.
Google’s Gemini in Chrome help page covers account, Incognito, administrator, and environment limitations.

Chrome itself remains free; installing or updating the browser does not unlock every AI capability. Google’s U.S. subscription page, as observed August 18, 2026, listed Gemini in Chrome as a benefit of AI Pro and Ultra and listed Auto browse as limited to Pro and Ultra subscribers in the U.S. The same page showed AI Plus as an early-access benefit for Gemini in Chrome, but that does not override the narrower Auto browse eligibility. Plan benefits and prices can change; check the Google AI plans page before subscribing.
| U.S. plan | Price shown August 18, 2026 | Relevant qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 per month | Does not mean every Chrome AI feature is included. |
| Google AI Plus | $4.99 per month | Page lists Gemini in Chrome as an early-access benefit; Auto browse is described separately as Pro/Ultra only in the U.S. |
| Google AI Pro | $19.99 per month | Page lists Gemini in Chrome; Auto browse eligibility is subject to rollout and usage limits. |
| Google AI Ultra | Starting at $99.99 per month | Page lists Gemini in Chrome and higher access to advanced Google AI features; this is a broad bundle, not a browsing-only plan. |
Pro may make sense if you already use Google services and will regularly use the wider plan benefits. Ultra is aimed at heavy users of Google’s premium AI tools, not ordinary Chrome browsing. If your only goal is an occasional page summary, the subscription bundle may not justify its cost.
Who is likely to find Chrome’s AI useful?
- Researchers and students: Multi-tab comparisons, summaries, and study materials can reduce manual organizing, provided important claims are checked against sources.
- Frequent shoppers: Comparing product details, reviews, and return terms is a natural use for tab context, Skills, and—where eligible—carefully supervised Auto browse.
- Google-service users: Gmail, Calendar, Maps, Flights, Shopping, and YouTube integrations are most useful when those services are already part of your routine.
- Privacy-conscious users: Limit page or app context when it includes confidential health, financial, legal, client, or corporate information. Do not interpret the on-device security feature as a claim that all AI processing is local.
- Managed work or school users: Check with your administrator before relying on a feature; policies may control availability and data use.
- Users who want conventional browsing: You can continue using Chrome without asking Gemini to process your pages, and can prefer direct search results and source reading.
For alternatives, Microsoft Edge with Copilot may be a more natural fit for Windows and Microsoft 365 users (Microsoft Edge Copilot). Perplexity Comet is an AI-first browser option for web research (Comet), while Brave Leo is positioned within a privacy-oriented browser (Brave Leo). If you want Gemini without Chrome-specific context, the standalone Gemini is another route. Their current prices and feature sets are not compared here.
Quick Recap
A practical way to try the features
- Start with a non-sensitive page and ask Gemini for a short summary plus the page sections supporting its key points.
- For a multi-tab task, specify what to compare and ask for source-by-source differences rather than one blended recommendation.
- Try a Skill only after a prompt reliably produces the format you want; review the saved workflow’s input and output before reusing it.
- Use Auto browse only when it is available to your account, begin with a low-risk task, and monitor its work log. Take over if the task deviates from your instructions.
- Verify any output that could affect money, health, legal rights, work, or a real-world booking before acting on it.
