Google has been consolidating home control into one app: Google Home. That means the Nest app experience is being phased out, and the same devices you’ve used for years are increasingly managed from Google Home instead.
If you’re seeing prompts to move, missing devices, or a gradual feature shift, you’re not imagining it. This guide walks you through what changes, how to switch safely on iPhone/iPad and Android, and what to do when devices don’t show up.

What Google Home’s Nest app takeover actually means
In practice, Google Home is becoming the control center for supported Nest-branded devices. The app you use for setup, live status, and daily controls is the big difference—not necessarily the underlying hardware or services.
As the takeover nears completion, Google is migrating the Nest app’s functionality into Google Home, including device discovery, viewing, and most day-to-day management tasks. Over time, the Nest app may become limited to specific legacy flows or stop receiving feature updates.

What to expect after the Nest app is retired
You’ll typically see these changes, even if your devices keep working on their own:
- Device management moves to Google Home. You’ll control thermostats, view cameras, and manage alerts from Google Home.
- Onboarding prompts appear. The Nest app may encourage migration, show partial functionality, or stop short of full controls.
- Fewer support paths are tied to Nest. If something breaks after a sign-in change or update, Google’s troubleshooting guidance will increasingly point to Google Home.
- Sharing stays possible, but access is managed in Google Home. People added to a home may need to accept invites again depending on how your account was set up.
Prerequisites before you switch
Before you uninstall anything, confirm you can sign in cleanly and see everything that matters.
- Google account access: Use the exact Google account that currently owns the Nest home and devices.
- Google Home app installed on iPhone/iPad or Android.
- Stable home Wi‑Fi for cameras, thermostats, and sensors (or at least for the first sync attempt).
- Optional but smart: verify your Google account’s two-factor authentication settings before changing apps.
How to move from the Nest app to Google Home (quick checklist)
If you want the safest path with the least risk, follow this sequence.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Open Google Home and sign in to the same Google account used with the Nest app.
- Check that your home(s) are visible in Google Home. If not, add the correct home.
- Turn on device discovery (if needed) and verify each device appears with the correct name.
- For cameras and video history, confirm you can view live feeds and event clips from Google Home.
- Confirm thermostat controls work (change set temperature or mode once).
- Only after confirming everything, remove the Nest app if you no longer need it.
This order reduces the chance you migrate into a different Google Home “home” container and end up thinking your hardware is missing.
Platform guide: iPhone and iPad (iOS)
On iPhone and iPad, the main workflow is sign-in, then device verification. UI labels can vary slightly between iOS versions, but the structure is consistent.
- Install or open the Google Home app.
- Tap Settings (gear icon) > Home to confirm you’re in the right home.
- If prompted, accept any migration prompts. Then tap Add > Set up device.
- Look under Devices (or the home’s main screen) for your thermostat, cameras, sensors, and doorbells.
- Open one camera tile and confirm Live viewing and recent events.
- Open your thermostat and confirm you can change Heat/Cool or adjust the target temperature.
If devices don’t appear, stop before uninstalling the Nest app. Use the troubleshooting section below instead.
Platform guide: Android
Android follows the same account-to-home model. Most issues come from signing into the wrong Google account or a mismatch between home ownership and shared access.

Platform guide: web setup and remote access
Some owners prefer verifying access from a browser, especially when troubleshooting sign-in or shared home permissions.
- Sign in to your Google account in a browser.
- Open Google Home services through the Google ecosystem available to you (device viewing and home management are exposed in browser flows depending on your setup).
- Confirm the same home and devices appear under the correct account.
- If you can view devices in browser but not in the app, it points to a mobile sync issue (restart the app and re-check the signed-in account).
Browser checks won’t fix a broken device pairing, but they help confirm whether the problem is account-level or app-level.
What happens to common Nest features
Most people care about a handful of feature categories. Below is what usually changes (and what should still work) when moving from Nest app controls to Google Home.

Thermostats and temperature history
Thermostat live control typically appears in Google Home as a device tile. You should be able to adjust temperature setpoints and modes.
Long-term history and advanced scheduling can show different layouts depending on your thermostat generation and settings, but the primary controls should be available in Google Home.
Cameras, doorbells, and video history
Camera viewing is one of the most visible shifts. If your cameras are powered and connected, Google Home should show live video and the event timeline.
If your camera shows a disconnected status, it usually means Wi‑Fi, power, or account authorization needs attention—not that your device was “lost.”

If alerts don’t fire after switching apps, verify your notification permissions on iOS/Android and confirm the devices are assigned to the same home profile.
Home/Away routines and automations
Routines and automations are managed through the Google Home ecosystem. Your “triggers” may look different in the UI, but the behavior should remain.
After migration, it’s worth testing one automation manually (for example, a motion-triggered routine) to confirm it still runs.
Google Nest Aware subscriptions
Your subscription is tied to your account. Moving app interfaces shouldn’t cancel access, but mismatched sign-ins can make it look like the subscription is missing.
In Google Home, check that the account used for viewing events is the one that owns the subscription. If video history is empty, the first suspect is account mismatch.
Troubleshooting when Google Home won’t show your devices
If Google Home can’t see your devices, don’t reinstall repeatedly. Most failures are sign-in, home-selection, or device authorization issues.
Fix account mismatches (most common)
People often use multiple Google accounts (work vs personal). Google Home will only display devices attached to the signed-in account.
- In Google Home, open Settings > confirm which Google account is active.
- Compare it with the account you used in the Nest app (check the Nest app’s sign-in screen if needed).
- Sign out of Google Home, then sign back in with the correct account.
Refresh the home graph in the app
Sometimes the home container loads, but the device list doesn’t refresh correctly after an update or migration prompt.

- Force close the Google Home app.
- Reopen it and wait for the home dashboard to fully render.
- Go to Add > Set up device only if you’re instructed to re-discover.
- Check whether the device appears after a few minutes of syncing.
Camera-specific issues
If a camera tile is present but shows no live feed or a disconnected state:
- Confirm the camera has power and, if applicable, a working Wi‑Fi signal at its location.
- Try viewing the camera from another device logged into the same account (to separate app issues from device connection issues).
- Restart the camera if your model supports it (power cycle with the manufacturer-recommended method).
If the camera only fails in Google Home but works elsewhere, re-check mobile permissions for the Google Home app on iOS/Android.
Thermostat and sensor latency issues
Latency or “stale” sensor readings usually comes from connectivity or an automation rule overriding state.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Verify the thermostat is connected to Wi‑Fi and not in an error state.
- Change one setting manually and wait 60–120 seconds.
- If the value snaps back, check routines/automations that may be resetting temperature targets.
Reset/repair steps when devices are stuck offline
If a device won’t recover after basic checks, you may need to repair it. The right approach depends on the device category.
- In Google Home, open the affected device tile.
- Look for device settings like Remove device or Factory reset (wording varies by model).
- Follow the device’s setup flow in Google Home: Add > Set up device > choose the device type.
- When repairing, keep your phone near the device and use the same Wi‑Fi network your device expects.
Only do full resets if you’ve ruled out account mismatches and basic connectivity problems.

App consolidation can be a good moment to audit who has access and what notifications you receive.
Shared homes and family members
When devices move under Google Home management, shared access is tied to Google Home’s home structure. If a family member can’t control a device:
Recommended Free Tools
- Check that they’re added to the same home in Google Home.
- Confirm they accepted the invite (invites can expire or fail silently depending on device/OS conditions).
- Verify their app notification permissions if they rely on alerts.
Two-factor authentication and sign-in sessions
If you recently changed your password or 2FA settings, devices may show temporary sync delays. Ensure you’re using the right Google account and that you didn’t accidentally switch to a different sign-in identity.

Alternatives if you still rely on the Nest app
Some owners want the Nest app’s old UI for a while. If the Nest app still opens and shows full controls for your devices, you can keep it installed as a fallback.
However, plan for the reality that feature updates, troubleshooting guidance, and new device onboarding will increasingly center on Google Home. Use the Nest app only if it still matches your needs and doesn’t create confusion about account ownership.
FAQ
Will my Nest devices stop working if I switch to Google Home?
No. Switching apps should not stop the hardware from working. The devices communicate with Google services; the app is the front-end for control and viewing. If devices disappear, it’s usually an account or sync issue.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDo I need to re-add cameras and thermostats in Google Home?
Often no. In most cases, devices appear automatically once you sign into the same Google account and select the correct home. If a device is missing or stuck offline, you may have to re-add or repair it.
Will my Nest Aware subscription carry over?
Usually yes, because subscriptions are tied to your Google account. If video history looks missing, verify you’re signed into Google Home with the correct account that owns the subscription.
What if Google Home shows the wrong home or duplicates devices?
That typically happens when you signed into a different account, or when the home container differs between apps. Confirm the home selection in Google Home and check which account the devices belong to.
Should I uninstall the Nest app?
After you confirm Google Home shows every device you use (including camera live view and thermostat control), uninstalling the Nest app is optional. Keep it for a short period only if it helps you troubleshoot migration gaps.
Bottom Line
Google Home is now the place where Nest device control is converging, and the Nest app’s role is shrinking. If you switch carefully—starting with account and home verification—you should keep uninterrupted access to cameras, thermostats, sensors, and notifications.
When something looks wrong, resist repeated reinstall cycles. First verify you’re signed into the correct Google account, confirm the right home container, then troubleshoot device connection status only after those foundations are solid.
