Google Home can now transfer all your old Nest gear in one pass, instead of moving devices one by one. If you’ve migrated accounts before—or you’ve got a mix of older Nest cameras, thermostats, and speakers—this change is meant to reduce setup time and breakage.
This guide breaks down what the transfer does, what you need ready, and the exact steps to run it in the Google Home app. You’ll also find troubleshooting paths when devices don’t show up or won’t authenticate.

What this new Google Home transfer means
Traditionally, moving older Nest devices into the current Google Home ecosystem has involved repeated pairing and re-linking. With the new all-at-once transfer, Google Home can attempt to move eligible devices under your selected home in a single workflow.
Practically, that means fewer manual steps, faster bring-up for multi-device households, and less chance of forgetting one sensor, thermostat, or camera during migration.

Who can use the all-at-once transfer
The feature is intended for setups where your “old Nest gear” is tied to a Nest account flow that Google Home can reconcile into the Google Home home structure.
Generally, you’ll be a good candidate if:
- You’re using the Google Home app on Android or iPhone.
- Your Nest devices are already associated with your Nest/Google identity in a way Google Home can detect.
- You’re transferring multiple devices (the payoff is biggest when you have more than a couple items).
If you only have one or two devices, manual addition may still feel simpler—but the all-at-once flow is designed specifically for multi-device homes.
Prerequisites before you start
Before starting any transfer, get the basics right. The most common failures come from account mismatch, missing home permissions, or devices being offline.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAccounts and homes
- Use the same Google account everywhere you manage Nest and Google Home.
- Confirm you’re transferring into the correct Google Home Home (not just the general Google Home app view).
- If the home is managed by multiple people, make sure you have permission to add/transfer devices.
Update your app
- Update the Google Home app to the latest available version on your phone.
- If the transfer option doesn’t appear, updating is usually the first thing to check.
Device conditions
- Bring all devices online before you begin. Cameras should be connected to Wi‑Fi; battery sensors should have sufficient charge.
- Keep your phone near your home router during the migration window so you don’t hit intermittent connectivity.
How to transfer old Nest gear at once (Google Home app)
The transfer workflow is driven from the Google Home app. The exact wording can vary slightly by app version, but the flow generally looks the same.
- Open the Google Home app on your phone.
- Select the correct Home at the top (or from the Home picker).
- Tap Settings (gear icon) for that home.
- Find the option related to transfer or add your Nest devices. If you see a prompt that offers an all-at-once or transfer workflow, choose it.
- Follow the on-screen steps to verify the account connection between your older Nest setup and Google Home.
- When prompted, confirm the transfer to move devices into the current home.
- Leave the app open while the transfer runs. For larger households, this can take several minutes.
- After completion, open the device list and verify each device appears and reports a recent status.
If you don’t see the transfer option, it’s usually one of two things: your app isn’t updated yet, or the devices aren’t eligible for the one-shot migration.

What happens to your devices during transfer
During an all-at-once transfer, Google Home tries to reconcile device identity and bring device controls into the new home structure.
- Device names: Some devices keep prior names; others may be assigned new defaults. Expect to rename any cameras and sensors for clarity.
- Rooms and groups: Your rooms and automations may not carry over perfectly. You may need to re-check room assignments.
- Home automations: Automations tied to old device IDs can break. You’ll likely need to recreate or update automations that reference affected devices.
- Firmware and reconnects: Cameras and thermostats may reconnect after the migration completes.
For a smooth outcome, verify each device card in Google Home shows it’s online (not in a repeating “setup” or “offline” state).

Common issues and troubleshooting
If the transfer stalls or certain devices don’t appear, don’t rerun blindly. Use targeted checks to avoid duplicate device entries.
1) Transfer option doesn’t show up
- Update the Google Home app from the App Store or Google Play.
- Check you’re logged into the correct Google account.
- Make sure you selected the intended Home before entering settings.
2) Devices transfer partially
- Confirm the missing devices are powered on and online.
- Wait 10–20 minutes after the transfer finishes, then refresh the device list.
- Retry only for the missing devices if the app offers an add/re-add flow for individual devices.
3) “Can’t connect” or authentication errors
These usually point to account mismatch or a device still bound to an old association flow.
- In the phone’s Google account settings, verify you’re not signed into multiple accounts.
- Toggle Wi‑Fi off/on or switch to a stable connection, then reopen Google Home.
- Reboot the affected device (where supported) and the home router if issues persist.
4) Duplicate devices appear
Duplicates can happen if you previously added devices manually while the transfer also tries to bring them in.

- Remove duplicates only after you confirm which device is receiving live status.
- If automations are misfiring, delete and recreate automations using the correct, current device entry.
5) Cameras show up but won’t stream
- Check for Wi‑Fi signal strength and try moving closer to the router.
- Confirm you didn’t switch networks during the transfer.
- Inspect camera permissions inside Google Home settings and phone privacy settings.
Device-specific notes
Different Nest device categories behave differently during migration. Use these notes to set expectations.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Nest cameras (indoor/outdoor)
Cameras often re-establish their connection after migration. If you see “offline,” power-cycle the camera and wait for it to rejoin Wi‑Fi. After that, verify the camera card displays a live status.
Nest thermostats
Thermostats may require the same Wi‑Fi network details and should be reachable during the transfer window. If your thermostat doesn’t appear, check the thermostat is on the expected network and not in a “setup” mode.
Nest Protect and sensors
Battery devices can be slower to report after identity changes. Give them time to reconnect (commonly 10–30 minutes) before you conclude the transfer failed.
Nest speakers and displays
Audio devices can be sensitive to account and home association. If the device appears but automation/voice control doesn’t work, confirm it’s assigned to the correct home and room and re-check Google Assistant device settings.

Best practices to avoid disruptions
- Schedule it: Run the transfer when you can spare 30–60 minutes for verification if you have many devices.
- Keep Wi‑Fi stable: Avoid changing router settings or network names during migration.
- Rename logically: After transfer, standardize names like “Front Door Camera,” “Hall Motion,” and “Living Room Thermostat.”
- Rebuild automations last: Move devices first, then update routines so they point to the correct device IDs.
When you should NOT use the all-at-once transfer
Use the cautious route (device-by-device setup) when the all-at-once transfer is likely to conflict with your current configuration.
- You already added some devices manually to Google Home and you’re unsure which ones match the old Nest identifiers.
- You have shared-home complexity (multiple household members controlling different devices) and you can’t confirm permissions.
- Your network is in flux (planned router replacement, ISP change, or VLAN/guest network changes).
If you fall into any of those categories, it’s usually safer to do a partial migration and verify each device works before moving on.
FAQs
Will the transfer erase my device settings?
It shouldn’t erase the physical device settings you’ve configured, but cloud-side associations (rooms, groupings, and automations) may need rework. Expect to rename or reassign some devices after migration.
Do I need to factory reset my Nest devices?
Usually, no. The goal of the transfer is to reconcile accounts without resetting. Reset is typically a last resort when authentication fails repeatedly.
How long does an all-at-once transfer take?
For a few devices, it can finish within several minutes. Larger households may take longer depending on network stability and how many devices are eligible.

What if my thermostat or camera still isn’t showing after the transfer?
Confirm the device is online, then refresh the Google Home device list. If it still doesn’t appear, check account correctness and consider re-adding only the missing device through the app’s normal add device flow.
Will my automations keep working?
Some routines may survive, but many device-linked automations break when device identifiers change. After the transfer, review each routine and ensure it references the correct current device entry.
Bottom Line
Google Home’s all-at-once transfer is a meaningful quality-of-life upgrade if you’re migrating multiple Nest devices. The process is designed to reduce repetitive pairing and cut down on missed devices during account transitions.
If you prepare with the right accounts, updated app, and stable Wi‑Fi, you’ll usually end up with a clean device inventory—then it’s just a matter of re-checking rooms and routines.
