Google says the Fitbit app became the Google Health app on May 19, 2026. Your compatible Fitbit tracker or Google Pixel Watch still supplies the underlying workout, sleep and vital-sign data; the app name, layout and some insight features changed. What you can record therefore depends first on your exact wearable, then on the Google Health features enabled for that data.
This distinction matters if you are deciding whether to update, troubleshooting a missing metric, or moving data from another service. The sections below separate app changes from hardware capabilities, show where Premium applies, and explain the Fitbit Web API deadline that can affect connected apps.

Google Health and Fitbit are now one app-and-device ecosystem
Google’s official transition is explicit: “Starting May 19, 2026, the Fitbit app will become the Google Health app.” The change is a rename and redesign of the companion app, while Fitbit-branded wearables remain supported alongside Google Pixel Watch devices. Google describes the new app as the place to view activity, sleep and health information collected by supported devices and connected services. Read the announcement and current availability details in the Google Health Help Center’s explanation of the redesigned app.
That means “Google Health versus Fitbit” is not a normal two-product contest. In practice, readers usually mean one of two comparisons:
#1 Best Overall

You can set drinking Water Reminders and Sedentary Reminders to establish a healthy way of working.
- Old Fitbit app versus Google Health app: the software interface, tabs and insight presentation changed.
- Google Health app versus Fitbit hardware: the app displays data that a compatible Fitbit device or Pixel Watch measures. The app cannot create a sensor reading that the paired device does not support.
Fitbit Charge 6 is one example of supported hardware in Google’s activity-goal and workout documentation. It is an example of compatibility, not a guarantee that every feature works identically on every generation. Check the device-specific lists in the workout guidance and health-and-fitness-goal guidance before relying on a particular exercise mode or measurement.
What changes immediately after the app transition
The name and navigation
On the software side, the Fitbit app branding changes to Google Health. The redesigned experience organizes information around fitness activities, sleep and health metrics rather than presenting the old Fitbit app identity. Your account and compatible wearable remain the important continuity points; changing the app name does not turn a basic tracker into a different sensor platform.
The data source does not change
Workout duration, route or exercise-mode details are produced by the paired wearable and, where applicable, the phone’s location services. Sleep detection comes from wearing a supported wrist device to bed. Heart rate, heart-rate variability, skin temperature, oxygen saturation and resting heart rate appear only when the exact Fitbit device or Pixel Watch supports those readings and records them under the required conditions.

Some insights are optional
Google’s sleep documentation distinguishes core tracking from extra analysis. Sleep detection and the standard Sleep Score are tied to supported device data; additional sleep insights and sleep-coach chat are features associated with Google Health Premium. A subscription is therefore not a blanket requirement for every workout, sleep or vital-sign feature.

At-a-glance comparison: what to check
| Question | What Google Health provides | What still depends on Fitbit or Pixel Watch hardware |
|---|---|---|
| Can I record a workout? | Fitness tab, activity summaries, goals and controls for supported devices. | Available exercise modes, shortcut buttons, GPS behavior, heart-rate capture and on-device controls vary by model. |
| Will sleep be detected automatically? | Sleep history, sleep stages when available and Sleep Score presentation. | The wrist device must support sleep tracking and be worn to bed; stage data is required for Sleep Score. |
| Which health metrics appear? | Google Health can display supported breathing rate, heart rate variability, skin temperature, oxygen saturation and resting heart rate. | The exact device determines whether each metric is measured. A missing metric can simply mean that the hardware does not support it. |
| Do outside apps transfer data? | Google Health can receive selected information through Health Connect, Apple Health and some direct app connections. | Each connection controls which metrics are shared and how they are calculated. Imported values may not match Google Health’s presentation exactly. |
| Will developer integrations continue? | Existing connections may continue when the partner supports the new path. | Google says Fitbit Web APIs will no longer be supported starting October 30, 2026; affected partners need to follow their reconnection or migration instructions. |
Workout tracking: the app organizes it, the wearable measures it
What Google Health changes
The Google Health Fitness area brings activities and fitness metrics into the redesigned app. You can review recorded sessions, see progress toward goals and use the activity information supplied by your paired device. The app is the reporting layer; it does not make every Fitbit or Pixel Watch expose the same workout shortcuts.
What remains model-specific
Google’s workout documentation lists supported Fitbit devices and Google Pixel Watch series, but exercise choices and controls vary. One model may offer a shortcut for a commonly used exercise, while another requires starting the activity from the phone. GPS, automatic exercise recognition, heart-rate sampling and on-device display controls can also differ. Do not infer support for a feature merely because another Fitbit model or Pixel Watch has it.
Set up a workout before your first session
- Confirm the pairing. Open Google Health and verify that the intended Fitbit device or Pixel Watch is connected to the same account you use for the app.
- Check the supported activity list. In the device or workout controls, look for the exercise type you plan to record. If it is absent, use the closest supported activity rather than assuming the app will add the missing mode.
- Choose the recording method. Start the exercise from the wearable when the model offers an on-device shortcut; otherwise start it from the Google Health workout interface or the documented phone control.
- Wear and position the device consistently. A secure, comfortable fit improves the chance of continuous heart-rate and motion readings. For outdoor sessions, allow the device and phone the location permissions required by that model’s GPS method.
- End and sync the session. Stop the workout on the same device or control that started it, then allow synchronization before checking the summary in Google Health.
How to troubleshoot a missing or incomplete workout
- The activity is not listed: check the model-specific supported activities in Google’s workout instructions; the limitation may be hardware rather than an app error.
- The session exists but lacks heart rate: verify fit, sensor contact, battery level and whether the device supports heart-rate recording during that activity.
- Distance or route is absent: check whether the wearable has built-in GPS or relies on a phone connection, and confirm location permission for the required device.
- Data is delayed: keep the wearable near the phone, open Google Health, and allow synchronization to finish before starting another troubleshooting step.
Because controls differ by model, Google’s general workout page is the authoritative place to match your device to its available exercise features. Avoid treating a Charge 6 instruction as universal for every Fitbit tracker or Pixel Watch.

Sleep tracking: automatic detection, Sleep Score and Premium insights
Automatic detection requires a supported device
Supported wrist-based Fitbit devices and Google Pixel Watch series can automatically detect sleep when worn to bed. The wearable records movement and other available signals during the sleep period, then Google Health presents the resulting sleep session. If you leave the device charging overnight, wear it loosely, or use hardware without sleep-stage support, the app may show less information or no Sleep Score.

How Sleep Score is calculated
Google says Sleep Score combines multiple sleep metrics and requires the device to track sleep stages. The score is a personalized tracking aid, not a diagnosis or a clinical threshold. Google reports that most users see an average score between 72 and 83. Its categories are:
| Score | Google category | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| 90–100 | Excellent | A high personal result for that night; compare it with your own pattern rather than treating it as proof of health. |
| 80–89 | Good | Generally favorable within Google’s labeling system. |
| 60–79 | Fair | Useful as a signal to inspect duration, timing and stage trends. |
| Below 60 | Poor | A prompt to review the night’s conditions and repeated patterns, not a medical diagnosis. |
The ranges and the 72–83 average are Google Health Help Center descriptions, not independently validated clinical cutoffs. For the exact score components, device requirements and current explanation, see Google’s Sleep Score help page.
What Premium adds
Core sleep recording and the standard score are separate from optional analysis. Google documents additional sleep insights and sleep-coach chat as Google Health Premium features. If those options are absent, that does not necessarily mean sleep tracking failed; it may mean the account does not include Premium or the device does not provide the data needed for that insight.
A practical sleep setup
- Charge before bedtime. Start the night with enough battery to cover the planned sleep period.
- Wear the device securely. Keep the sensor in contact with your skin without making the band uncomfortably tight.
- Sync in the morning. Keep the wearable near the phone and open Google Health so the overnight record can finish uploading.
- Check stages and score together. A score may be unavailable when sleep stages were not captured, even if a basic sleep duration record exists.
- Track trends. Compare several nights under similar conditions. A single low or high number is less informative than a repeated change in your own baseline.
If sleep concerns persist, use the data as a conversation aid and consult a healthcare professional. Google’s score is a wellbeing feature and should not be used to diagnose a sleep disorder.

Health metrics: availability follows the exact device
Metrics Google Health may display
Google lists breathing rate, heart rate variability, skin temperature, oxygen saturation and resting heart rate among the vitals that can appear in the app. A compatible Fitbit device or Pixel Watch is required, and the app may need sufficient overnight wear or repeated readings before a value is shown. The vitals tracking documentation explains the current device-dependent behavior.
| Metric | What the app can show | Why it may be missing |
|---|---|---|
| Breathing rate | A recorded breathing-rate trend when supported. | The paired model may not measure it, or there may not be enough qualifying data. |
| Heart rate variability | HRV readings or trends from supported wearables. | Support varies by device and recording conditions; an unsupported model will not create the metric through software. |
| Skin temperature | Skin-temperature readings from compatible hardware. | The sensor may be unavailable on the model or may require overnight wear and suitable contact. |
| Oxygen saturation | Oxygen-saturation information where the device and region support it. | Device, software, regulatory or data-availability limits can prevent a reading. |
| Resting heart rate | A resting-heart-rate value or trend calculated from supported readings. | Insufficient rest-period data, poor contact or an unsupported device can leave the field blank. |
These are wellness measurements. Google does not establish them as diagnostic tests in the cited help pages. Treat changes as information to monitor, not as a reason to alter medication or self-diagnose. Seek medical advice for symptoms or health concerns.
How to investigate a missing vital
- Identify the exact wearable model. Do not rely on the Fitbit brand name alone; capabilities differ across generations and between Fitbit and Pixel Watch devices.
- Check the supported-metric list. Compare the model with Google’s current vitals documentation.
- Wear it during the required period. Some values depend on overnight or repeated readings rather than a single manual check.
- Improve sensor contact and charge. A loose fit, depleted battery or interrupted wear can reduce the data available for calculation.
- Allow synchronization. Open Google Health after the recording period and wait for the device to finish syncing.
Connections, imported data and the October 30, 2026 API deadline
What can connect
Google Health accepts data through Health Connect, Apple Health and some direct app connections. The available metrics are controlled by each platform’s permissions and integration. One service may share workouts but not sleep stages; another may provide a daily total without the source detail Google Health uses for its own calculations.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Why numbers can differ between apps
Imported readings are not guaranteed to match Google Health exactly. Apps may use different sampling windows, filters, rounding rules or definitions for a “day,” workout or sleep session. A discrepancy does not by itself prove that either service is broken. Compare the source, timestamp, unit and calculation method before deciding that data was lost.

Fitbit Web APIs are being discontinued
Google states that Fitbit Web APIs will no longer be supported starting October 30, 2026. This matters mainly to partner apps and services that retrieve Fitbit data through those developer interfaces, rather than to ordinary on-device recording. If a connected app stops updating, look for that partner’s migration or reconnection instructions before assuming your wearable has failed. Google’s current connection guidance is at Connect third-party devices and apps to Google Health.
Migration checklist for connected-app users
- List every service that reads Fitbit data. Include training logs, coaching tools and dashboards, not just apps visible on your phone’s home screen.
- Check the partner’s notice. Confirm whether it uses Fitbit Web APIs and whether it has moved to a supported Google Health, Health Connect or other connection method.
- Review permissions. Reauthorize only the data categories you need, such as workouts, sleep or heart rate.
- Compare a recent record. After reconnecting, verify that a new workout or sleep session appears with the expected date, duration and source.
- Export or retain important history where appropriate. A reconnection generally affects future synchronization; it may not automatically repair historical gaps.
Which experience fits common situations?
You already own a Fitbit tracker
Install or update Google Health, keep the tracker paired and verify that your model appears in the supported workout, sleep and vitals documentation. The app transition alone does not require replacing a functioning Fitbit device. Focus on whether your current model records the specific exercise modes and metrics you use.
You use a Google Pixel Watch
Google Health is the redesigned companion experience for the same broad activity, sleep and health-data workflow. Confirm the exact Pixel Watch generation and the sensors or exercise controls available on it; “Pixel Watch series” is not a promise of identical support across every model.
You are choosing hardware for sleep first
Prioritize a model that supports automatic sleep detection, sleep stages and the specific overnight metrics you care about. Sleep Score requires stage tracking, and Premium may be relevant only if you want the additional insight and coaching features.
You are choosing hardware for workouts first
Compare supported exercise modes, start/stop controls, GPS arrangement, battery behavior and the activity summary you need. Use Google’s model-specific workout list rather than assuming that a feature shown in a demonstration exists on every Fitbit device.
You depend on another health app
Audit its connection before October 30, 2026. Determine whether it receives data through Fitbit Web APIs, Health Connect, Apple Health or a direct integration, then test a new workout and a new sleep record after any migration.
What the rename does not mean
- It does not make every Fitbit device and Pixel Watch feature-identical.
- It does not guarantee that every historical Fitbit field will transfer through a third-party connection.
- It does not make Sleep Score a medical diagnosis or turn its categories into clinical thresholds.
- It does not make Google Health Premium necessary for every basic workout, sleep or vital-sign record.
- It does not ensure that imported readings from another app will equal Google Health’s calculations.
The practical rule is simple: use Google Health as the new software home, but evaluate the wearable model and the data connection separately. That approach tells you what genuinely changed after May 19, 2026 and what remains constrained by sensors, permissions and partner support.
