Fitbit-compatible devices collect activity, heart-rate, sleep and related signals; Google Health Coach is the Gemini-powered software layer that uses those records, your goals and your conversation history to suggest workouts, explain trends and offer wellness guidance. The current Fitbit app is identified in Google’s app listing as Google Health.
Choose a Fitbit device when you need sensors and continuous measurements. Choose Coach when you want those measurements turned into plans and explanations. Many people will use both, but access, Premium requirements, country, device, app version and preview status determine what is actually available.

Google Health Coach and Fitbit solve different problems
The most important distinction is the product layer. Fitbit is the wearable ecosystem: compatible watches and trackers collect measurements, while the Google Health app stores and displays them. Google Health Coach is a coaching feature inside that broader app. It does not replace a tracker and does not create a complete health record by itself.
Coach can use health and wellness information associated with your Google Account, including data from paired Fitbit devices and connected apps. Google describes plans and answers built from metrics, goals, workout history, sleep data and your conversations with Coach. Without connected measurements, its recommendations are based on less evidence and may be more generic.

Heart-rate, heart-rate-variability (HRV), recovery and Cardio Load features are presented as wellness or training signals. They are not diagnoses.

What Fitbit devices contribute
A paired Fitbit device can provide the observations that make Coach more specific. Google’s privacy FAQ lists steps, distance, calories, weight, heart rate, sleep stages, active minutes, manual entries and information shared by connected services among the health data that may be stored or processed.
Activity and exercise
Steps, distance, active minutes and workout history give Coach context about your routine. A recommendation can account for what you have logged rather than assuming that every day starts from zero. The exact sensors, workout modes and metrics depend on the device and app version, so confirm support for a metric before buying hardware for that purpose.

Sleep
Sleep-stage records and longer-term sleep trends can inform sleep insights and scheduling suggestions. A trend is not a clinical sleep study, and a missing night, loose fit or unsupported device can reduce the quality of the record.
Heart rate, HRV and recovery
Google describes heart-rate and recovery tracking, HRV and Cardio Load guidance. These indicators can help with training decisions, such as whether to keep a session easy after a demanding day. They should not be treated as proof that you are healthy, injured or safe to exercise. Seek professional advice for symptoms or medical concerns.

How Coach turns records into recommendations
1. It combines your stated goal with available history
Coach uses goals, preferences, routines, workout history and health metrics you have connected. A person who asks for a beginner plan while logging little activity should receive a different starting point from someone with a consistent training history. The system cannot personalize information it cannot access.
2. It uses conversation as additional context
Your questions and replies help Coach refine a plan. Conversation history can therefore become part of the information associated with the feature. Ask it to explain which metric influenced a suggestion, what assumption it made and how to adjust the plan if your schedule changes.
3. It produces guidance, not a prescription
Google says Coach uses Gemini models. Generative answers can be incomplete or wrong, and Google Play warns users to check AI responses for accuracy. Treat a recommendation as a starting point: verify intensity, watch for pain or unusual symptoms, and use a qualified clinician for diagnosis or treatment decisions.
4. It may require Premium
Google states that some Coach capabilities require Google Health Premium. The available set can change by country, device, account, app version and rollout stage. Do not assume that seeing Coach in a product announcement means every account has the same tools.
Privacy: what data can be involved
Google’s privacy materials describe a broad set of possible inputs. In addition to wearable measurements, they include manual entries, data imported from connected services, optional precise location, usage and diagnostic data, and interactions with generative-AI features. Coach access depends on what you connected and separately consented to.

Medical records are a separate, higher-sensitivity case
Google says that, where the service and region support it, uploaded or connected medical records may include laboratory results and clinical notes. A record stored in Google Health may not be complete or official. For medical care or an official copy, obtain records from the healthcare provider.

For U.S. users, Google warns that records requested from a provider or uploaded to Google Health are no longer covered by HIPAA once stored there. This warning concerns records held in the app; it should not be generalized to every record held by a healthcare provider.
Google’s stated advertising and model-training policies
Google’s Google Health privacy FAQ states: Google committed to not use Fitbit users’ health and wellness data for Google Ads.
That is Google’s stated commitment, not an independent audit or guarantee about every category of data in every Google product.
Google also says personal interactions with AI in Google Health are not used to train underlying generative models unless the user separately opts in to research and development. Read this alongside the service’s other data-processing disclosures and your connected-app permissions.
Human review and automated safety processing
For users who opt into Coach, Google says conversations are not accessed by human reviewers except in two situations: you submit feedback about a conversation, or you separately and explicitly consent to research and development. When feedback is submitted, trained reviewers may inspect the specific conversation and associated health and activity data. Google also describes automated, non-human safety processing.

This means that “private” does not mean “never processed.” Review the feedback prompt before sending it, especially if the conversation contains identifying details or sensitive symptoms.
Controls: turn Coach off, hide insights or delete conversations
Google’s Help Center provides the controls. Labels can vary slightly by country or app release, but the practical options are distinct:
- Turn Coach off and revoke consent: Open Google Health, go to Coach settings, and use the option to turn off the feature or revoke Coach consent. This stops future Coach use of the permissions you withdraw; it does not automatically erase every other health record in your Google Account.
- Hide messages without disabling the feature: Choose No Coach insights to remove Coach messages from the Today tab while retaining related benefits in the Fitness and Sleep tabs.
- Manage or delete conversation history: In Coach, open the conversation-history controls and delete individual conversations or the available history-management option. Deleting a conversation is separate from deleting wearable data, manual entries or connected-service records.
- Review optional permissions: Check connected apps, precise location, usage and diagnostic sharing, and any research-and-development consent. Disable permissions you do not need, then confirm which features stop working.
If you submit feedback, remember that Google says the specific conversation and associated health and activity data may be reviewed by trained people. Avoid including information that is unnecessary to explain the problem.

Coach availability is not universal. Google describes access in certain countries with Google Health Premium, and features can depend on a compatible device and current app version. Preview functions may be limited to eligible accounts.
Medical-record linking preview
In a March 17, 2026 announcement, Google described an upcoming U.S. Public Preview for linking medical records through b.well or CLEAR, plus a planned continuous-glucose-monitor connection through Health Connect. The announcement uses preview language; availability should be checked for your country, account, app version and eligibility rather than assumed.

Research collaboration
The same announcement described a research study with Included Health about conversational AI and navigating health during virtual visits. A research announcement does not establish a generally available consumer feature.
Fitbit-account transition
Google’s privacy FAQ says Fitbit-account access ended after May 19, 2026. Users who did not migrate could download or delete data before deletion processing began July 15, 2026. Those dates are now transition history. Google says migrated Fitbit data is associated with the Google Account and handled under Google’s privacy terms and Google Health disclosures.
Which option fits your goal?
| If you primarily want… | Start with… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Continuous steps, heart rate or sleep measurements | A compatible Fitbit device and Google Health app | The hardware supplies the observations; the app stores and displays them. |
| A plan that adapts to your history and stated preferences | Google Health Coach, with the relevant device and permissions connected | Coach adds interpretation and conversational planning to recorded data. |
| Minimal data sharing | The app and device settings with only essential permissions, and Coach disabled or limited | Fewer connected inputs mean less personalization but narrower data access. |
| Clinical diagnosis, treatment or an official medical record | A licensed clinician and the provider’s records system | Google labels the app not intended for medical purposes. |
| Advanced Coach functions | Check Google Health Premium eligibility first | Google says some features require Premium and availability varies. |
How to set up a useful, privacy-conscious comparison
- Confirm the account transition: Sign in with the Google Account that holds your migrated Fitbit data. If historical data is missing, use Google’s account and data-management support rather than creating a second account.
- Check device support: Confirm that your Fitbit model and phone operating system support the metrics and app version you need. Do not buy for HRV, Cardio Load or sleep stages without verifying that the specific combination supports them.
- Start with a narrow goal: Ask Coach for one outcome, such as a gradual walking routine or a sleep-schedule adjustment. State constraints such as available days, equipment, injuries or clinician-imposed limits.
- Inspect the assumptions: Ask which logged metrics and dates influenced the recommendation. Correct stale goals, duplicate entries or missing workouts before relying on the plan.
- Set boundaries: Keep medical symptoms, medication changes and diagnosis questions with a clinician. Use Coach for general education and habit planning.
- Review privacy choices: Revisit Coach consent, connected apps, location and diagnostics after setup. Turn off data sources that do not improve the guidance you actually use.
- Test deletion: Open conversation-history controls and remove a test conversation if you need to understand the available deletion workflow. Wearable records and connected-service data may have separate controls.
Common failure modes and what to check
Coach recommendations seem generic
Check whether a compatible device is paired, whether recent workouts and sleep are syncing, and whether your goal and preferences are filled in. A privacy setting that blocks a data source can reduce personalization by design.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →A metric is missing
Confirm device support, wear time, sensor fit, phone permissions, account connection and app version. A missing value can result from hardware limits, an interrupted sync or a feature that has not rolled out in your country.
You cannot find Coach
Check country eligibility, Google Health Premium status, account type, app updates and whether the feature is still in preview. Product announcements do not guarantee immediate access.
You want to remove Coach messages but keep trend views
Use No Coach insights rather than revoking all Coach consent. Google describes this option as hiding messages on the Today tab while keeping benefits in Fitness and Sleep tabs.
You need a medical answer
Do not treat an AI explanation, recovery score or heart-rate trend as a diagnosis. Google Play’s limitation is explicit: Not intended for medical purposes.
Contact a qualified professional for symptoms, treatment decisions or interpretation of clinical results.

Fitbit-compatible hardware is the measurement layer; Google Health Coach is the interpretation and planning layer. The combination can be useful when you want recommendations grounded in your activity and sleep history, but it requires more connected data and introduces AI-conversation privacy considerations. Check Premium and regional eligibility, review permissions before syncing sensitive information, and keep wellness guidance separate from clinical care.
