Google says the Pixel 9 shipped with its most hardened cellular baseband as of October 3, 2024. The modem now combines bounds and integer-overflow checks, stack canaries, control-flow integrity (CFI), and automatic zero-initialization of stack variables. These layers make common remote-exploitation techniques harder and can stop a compromised execution path, but they do not make cellular firmware vulnerability-free.
What Google changed
In its October 3, 2024 announcement, Google described years of work hardening Pixel cellular modem firmware. Pixel 9 represented the company’s strongest baseband-hardening result at that time, according to Google’s account in “Pixel’s Proactive Approach to Security: Addressing Vulnerabilities in Cellular Modems”.
The protections are aimed at memory-corruption and control-flow attacks in the modem, a separate firmware environment that handles LTE, 4G and 5G communications. They are defense-in-depth measures: a bug may still exist, but turning it into reliable code execution becomes more difficult.
Why the cellular baseband is a high-value target
The baseband continuously parses data arriving from cellular networks. That input can include manipulated packets, traffic from a false base station, and remotely delivered IMS messages. Some attack paths can therefore reach the modem without a malicious Android app or physical access, although practical exploitability depends on the protocol, network conditions, device state and the specific vulnerability.

The modem is separate from Android’s application processor, with its own firmware, toolchain and real-time power constraints. That separation limits some failures but does not make the subsystem irrelevant: it participates in communications and exchanges data with the rest of the phone. Google’s wider firmware guidance identifies cellular code as a priority because it combines exposed parsers with sensitive privileges. See Google’s firmware-hardening overview.
Google’s baseband-specific guidance highlights pre-authentication protocols such as Radio Resource Control (RRC) and Non-Access Stratum (NAS), along with complex ASN.1 parsers and IMS functionality. These components may process network data before the phone has fully authenticated a network. The technical discussion is at “Hardening cellular basebands in Android”.
The five production mitigations Google describes
Bounds Sanitizer
Bounds checks are added around selected memory operations. If instrumented code tries to read or write outside an allowed region, the violation can be detected instead of silently corrupting memory. That disrupts out-of-bounds exploitation, but coverage is limited to the operations and code paths that are instrumented; it is not equivalent to making all modem code memory-safe.

Integer Overflow Sanitizer
Integer calculations are checked for overflow that could produce a bad length, index, allocation size or pointer calculation. Such arithmetic errors can lead to memory corruption. Google’s earlier technical material says IntSan can abort execution on signed or unsigned overflow unless the behavior is explicitly handled or permitted. Existing firmware sometimes relies intentionally on wraparound, so adopting the checks can require code changes.
Stack canaries
A canary value is placed near sensitive stack data. If a stack overwrite changes it, the modem can detect likely corruption before continuing along the altered path. Canaries help against particular stack-smashing techniques; they do not prevent every stack exploit or other memory-safety bug.
Control-Flow Integrity
CFI restricts indirect calls and jumps to an allowed set of destinations. Google says that, in the modem, an invalid control-flow transfer causes the modem to restart rather than follow an unauthorized path. That is a deliberate security-versus-availability trade-off: exploit execution is stopped, but cellular service may be interrupted while the modem recovers. Google has not published a complete user-facing specification for notifications, logs or recovery timing.

Automatic stack-variable initialization
Pixel phones automatically initialize stack variables to zero, according to Google. This reduces the chance that uninitialized stack contents disclose sensitive data or become useful exploit material. The statement concerns stack variables; it does not mean every allocation or firmware buffer is automatically initialized.
Testing tools are not the same as shipped defenses
Google says it uses AddressSanitizer during testing to find memory bugs before firmware ships. That should not be read as evidence that AddressSanitizer runs continuously in the production modem. The production protections Google explicitly names are the bounds and integer sanitizers, stack canaries, CFI and automatic stack-variable initialization.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat happens when a check detects an attack?
The clearest public behavior is CFI’s fail-safe restart. For the other mitigations, Google describes detection and prevention benefits but does not publish a universal Pixel model-by-model recovery procedure. Users should not assume they will see a particular warning or settings control when a check triggers.

A restart can preserve the security boundary while temporarily affecting calls, texts or mobile data. It is better understood as incident containment than as a repair of the underlying defect.
Does every Pixel, or every Android phone, have these protections?
Google says it had been deploying baseband hardening for years and calls Pixel 9 the most hardened baseband it had shipped as of October 2024. The announcement does not provide a feature-by-feature matrix for earlier Pixel generations, modem variants or firmware builds, so the Pixel 9 description should not be generalized to every model.
Nor does a Pixel announcement automatically describe competing Android phones. Google’s ecosystem guidance encourages manufacturers and firmware suppliers to adopt similar techniques, but implementation depends on each device’s modem software and vendor. The 2023 recommendations appear in Google’s Android firmware-hardening article.

The limits of “hardened”
- Sanitizers generally cover instrumented operations, not every component or bug.
- Logic errors, authentication mistakes, race conditions and design flaws can remain.
- A mitigation may stop exploitation without fixing the vulnerable code.
- CFI and similar fail-safe responses can trade exploit prevention for a modem crash or restart.
- Remote does not mean unconditional: cellular technology, carrier configuration, proximity, authentication state and modem state can all matter.
These controls therefore reduce exploitability rather than prove immunity. Installing Android updates remains important, but an update cannot be treated as proof that a particular Pixel contains every listed feature unless Google documents that coverage for the device and build.
Engineering costs and trade-offs
Runtime checks and stricter control-flow rules consume engineering and potentially execution resources. Integer-overflow instrumentation can expose assumptions about arithmetic wraparound that developers must refactor. Firmware must also meet tight latency and power budgets, so hardening is an optimization problem rather than a switch that is free in every configuration.
Google’s next step: memory-safe Rust in the modem
Google’s April 10, 2026 update, “Bringing Rust to the Pixel Baseband,” describes a Rust DNS parser integrated into modem firmware. DNS parsing is a useful target because it handles complex, untrusted input and memory-unsafe implementations can contain corruption bugs. Rust’s memory-safety guarantees can prevent important classes of those defects in the code written with them.
The same report documents the practical cost: adding Rust’s core and compiler-builtins produced unexpected power and performance regressions during testing. Rust does not eliminate logic errors or every modem vulnerability, and integrating it into real-time firmware requires toolchain, binary-size, latency and power work. The direction is significant because it moves beyond detecting mistakes toward preventing a class of mistakes in selected components.
What Pixel owners should do
- Keep Android and vendor components updated through the normal update channel.
- Use a supported Pixel model that still receives security fixes under Google’s current policy.
- Treat “most hardened” as a comparative statement, not a guarantee that the modem cannot be compromised.
- Where the exact device and carrier support it, consider network controls such as disabling 2G. That is a separate defense from compiler and firmware hardening, and menu availability varies by model and software version.
- Report suspected vulnerabilities through Google’s Android and Google Devices Security Reward Program. Its rules include eligible Pixel device firmware and radio units; inclusion in the program is not evidence that vulnerabilities have been eliminated.
Bottom line
Pixel 9 marked Google’s most hardened cellular baseband at the time of the October 2024 announcement. Bounds and integer sanitizers, stack canaries, CFI and zero-initialized stack variables add layers that can detect or disrupt common modem exploit techniques. Google’s later Rust work shows a longer-term shift toward memory-safe components, balanced against real power and performance costs. The accurate conclusion is stronger resistance to exploitation—not a solved baseband-security problem.
