Google News and Discover often depend on the same underlying indexing, ranking, and serving systems that power Google Search. So when Search has an outage or partial degradation, News and Discover can lag, fail to refresh, show stale cards, or temporarily lose personalization.
This guide walks through the most reliable, user-side checks and fixes. You’ll also learn how to tell when the problem is still upstream and what to do while you wait for Google’s recovery.

The goal is simple: get your feed loading again, confirm that your content is actually updating, and avoid the most common missteps like repeated logins or unnecessary app reinstalls.
What it means when Google News and Discover break after a Search outage
During Search incidents, Google may temporarily reduce capacity, roll back services, or run in a degraded mode. Even if the Google app is “working,” Discover and News can still be impacted because they rely on the same content understanding and delivery pipelines.

In many cases, the system recovers automatically. Your job is to avoid fighting stale caches, outdated app data, or network quirks that can make a transient upstream issue look worse on your device.
Quick checks before you change anything
Start with checks that rule out local problems. These take under five minutes and prevent a lot of unnecessary resets.
Check if everything is affected or only Discover/News
Open Google Search and try a few queries. Also open YouTube to confirm basic Google connectivity. If Search is still broken, treat it as an upstream issue.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Try a different network
Switch between Wi‑Fi and mobile data. If Discover loads instantly on one network but not the other, the problem may be DNS, captive portal, or firewall filtering.
Check time and date
On both iOS and Android, verify automatic time is enabled. Incorrect system time can break token validation and prevent personalized feed requests from completing.
Common symptoms and what usually causes them
These patterns show up frequently after Search outages and help you choose the right fix.
| Symptom | What it often indicates | What to try first |
|---|---|---|
| Discover shows the same stories for hours | Feed refresh calls are failing or delayed | Refresh the app, then check network |
| News cards don’t load, just spinning placeholders | Backend degraded or app cache is stale | Clear cache (Android) / reload (iOS) |
| Top stories appear, but topics/interests feel wrong | Personalization signals not updated during recovery | Reconfirm interests, then re-check |
| Discover disappears or shows blank sections | Configuration fetch failure or outdated app | Update Google app and restart device |
| Only one device is broken | Local cache, cookie/token mismatch, or specific network | Clear app data (last resort) on that device |
Android troubleshooting (Google app and Android settings)
On Android, Discover and News are primarily served through the Google app. Start with the lowest-impact actions first: refresh, then app updates, then cache cleanup.
1) Force-refresh the feed
Open the Google app, go to Discover (or tap the News/For you view), then pull down to refresh. If you see “Last updated” but it’s unchanged for hours, move to the next steps.
2) Update the Google app
Open the Google Play Store and update Google (the app with the multi-color pinwheel icon). Use the latest available version to avoid bugs fixed after the outage.
After updating, fully close the app (remove from recent apps) and reopen it.
3) Clear cache for the Google app (recommended first)
This fixes stale responses without wiping account identity data.
Recommended Free Tools
- Go to Settings > Apps > Google.
- Tap Storage.
- Tap Clear cache.
- Restart the Google app and check Discover/News again.
4) Clear cache for Google Play services (only if needed)
If Discover won’t authenticate or keep failing silently, clearing cache for Google Play services can help. Avoid clearing data unless you’re comfortable re-signing into some services.

5) Disable battery restrictions for the Google app
On some devices, background restrictions can delay feed refresh after recovery.
- Go to Settings > Battery > Battery usage or App battery usage.
- Select Google.
- Set it to Unrestricted (or the least restrictive option available).
6) If all else fails: Clear storage (data) for Google
This is more disruptive than clearing cache. It can remove local app settings and may require sign-in prompts.
- Go to Settings > Apps > Google.
- Tap Storage.
- Tap Clear storage (or Clear data).
- Reopen the Google app and sign in if prompted.
iPhone and iPad troubleshooting (Google app and iOS settings)
On iOS, Discover and News are also largely driven by the Google app. iOS doesn’t offer the same “clear cache” controls you get on Android, so you’ll rely on reload/restart, app updates, and (as a last resort) reinstall.

- Install it again from the App Store.
Reset and refresh strategies that work across platforms
These steps apply whether you’re on Android or iPhone/iPad. Use them when the issue seems to persist beyond a simple refresh.
Restart the device
A full reboot clears background tasks and network sessions that can get “stuck” during outages. After reboot, reopen Google app and check Discover first.
Sign out and back in (only if personalization seems broken)
If the feed content looks wrong, sign out and sign back in to refresh authentication tokens. Don’t do this repeatedly; one clean cycle is enough.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Clear cookies or site data in your browser (desktop workaround)
If you’re testing through a browser (for example, viewing News/Discover experiences that load in a web view), clear cookies for google-related domains. This is especially helpful if you changed networks and tokens didn’t refresh.

Rebuild Discover preferences
After recovery, Discover may take a few hours to re-rank topics. You can speed up correction by adjusting interests (see account section), but avoid making drastic changes until the system stabilizes.
Account and personalization issues after platform disruptions
Search outages can disrupt personalization signals. That doesn’t always mean “your account is broken,” but it can mean your feed temporarily can’t reconcile interests, topics, or history.
Confirm you’re using the right Google account
Multi-account setups are a common hidden cause. Verify the account in the Google app matches the one you expect for News and Discover.
Review topics and interests
In Discover, topics and interests are usually adjustable. If you see irrelevant content for too long, revisit the interest settings after the incident has recovered.
- Open the Google app.
- Go to Discover settings or the interests/topic controls (varies by app version).
- Remove clearly irrelevant topics.
- Add or confirm topics you want to see.
Use “Not interested” on repeated bad cards
If a certain story repeats, use the feed’s interest controls. Over a day, this trains the ranking signals once recovery stabilizes.
Watch for cross-device delays
Changes to interests may not propagate instantly across all devices. Give it 2–24 hours for consistent results, especially if the outage was widespread.
Network and DNS checks when content loading is slow or stuck
When Search is partially degraded, network retry logic becomes more visible. Some DNS setups or filtering services can turn “slow” into “never loads.”
Try a different DNS provider
If you control DNS on your device/router, test a mainstream provider. On mobile, you can often use the system-level DNS settings if supported.
After switching, fully restart the Google app (or reboot the device) so requests use the new resolver.
Disable captive portal interference
Public Wi‑Fi with captive portals can return odd responses. Connect to a trusted network and test again.
Check proxy and VPN
Some VPNs route Google traffic differently during incidents. Temporarily disable VPN to compare behavior.

When the problem is on Google’s side: how to confirm status
Not every “broken Discover” moment is local. If Search is degraded, expect downstream effects in News and Discover while recovery is underway.
Look for ongoing Search incident status
The most reliable signal is Google’s public status reporting. During an outage, you’ll often see mentions of Search and related surfaces impacting user experience.
Compare multiple devices on the same account
If Discover fails on both your iPhone and Android (or on two different networks), it strongly points to an upstream service issue. If it’s only one device, go back to app cache/storage and network checks.

After you’ve cleared cache/restarted and verified networks, you should see improvements. If you don’t, use this checklist to pinpoint what’s still blocking updates.
Confirm the app is not running an outdated build
Check the Google app version in the app store (Android Play Store / iOS App Store). If an update exists, install it—even if the UI “looks fine.”
Check system permissions
Permissions rarely block basic feed rendering, but on some builds permissions related to browsing, background activity, or notifications can affect refresh behavior.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Try clearing browser data only for Google web content
If you’re primarily seeing issues via a browser view of News or Discover, clearing site data for google.com-related entries is safer than full browser resets.
Try another Google surface to validate account health
If you can sign in and use Google services normally, the account likely isn’t the root problem. Focus on app caching and network.
Last resort: reinstall and re-authenticate
On iOS, reinstalling is the closest equivalent to clearing storage. On Android, clearing storage (data) for the Google app is the last step before escalation.
Security and data considerations
Most fixes here are low risk. Still, app “clear storage/data” and sign-out cycles can remove local settings and can trigger sign-in prompts.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Avoid repeated logins. One sign-out/sign-in cycle is enough to refresh tokens.
- Prefer cache clearing over storage/data clearing. Cache clearing usually fixes stale feed responses without losing preferences.
- Be cautious with third-party VPN/DNS apps. If you use security or traffic filtering tools, disable them temporarily to test.
- Don’t share account recovery info. If you troubleshoot with support, never send passwords or verification codes.

Google Search
Search is the broad query engine. If Search is degraded, you’ll often see partial failures in other surfaces that depend on the same backend systems.
Google News
News is more publisher- and topic-driven. It may show loading issues or stale story sets when indexing and ranking services are under strain.
Google Discover
Discover is personalized. It can appear “wrong” during recovery because interest modeling, ranking signals, or feed refresh pipelines are temporarily inconsistent.
Recommended Free Tools
YouTube
YouTube is a separate platform, but Google connectivity and auth issues can still affect it. If YouTube works normally while Discover fails, the cause is more likely app/data or feed-specific.
FAQ
Will Google’s outage fix itself automatically?
Often, yes. Many incidents resolve as the backend recovers and caches repopulate. User-side steps mostly help you clear stale local state so you can receive the recovered feed.
Why does Discover take hours to update after Search returns?
Personalization signals and feed refresh scheduling can lag behind core Search recovery. If your interests were affected, it can take time for re-ranking to settle.
Should I clear storage/data for the Google app right away?
No. Start with refresh, app updates, and cache clearing (Android). Use clearing storage/data or reinstall only when cache clearing and network checks don’t fix the issue.
Does signing out help?
It can help if authentication tokens or personalization sessions are inconsistent after the outage. If you sign out, do it once and then test Discover/News after signing back in.
Why does it work on one device but not another?
That usually points to local cache/storage, app version differences, device-specific network filtering, or OS-level battery/data restrictions.
Can DNS or VPN be the real cause even if Search has an outage?
Yes. Outages can make retry behavior more sensitive, which amplifies existing network issues. Testing on a different network is one of the fastest ways to separate upstream degradation from local routing problems.
Bottom Line
When Google News and Discover act up after Search outages, treat it as a mix of upstream recovery and local state. Start with quick network and refresh checks, update the Google app, clear cache (Android), and only then move to sign-out or reinstall.
If multiple devices on the same account fail simultaneously—especially while Search itself is degraded—your best “fix” is waiting for Google’s recovery window, while you keep your app updated and your device networking clean.
