Google Find Hub vs. Samsung Find: Which Android Device-Finding Service Should You Use?

By Freedom251 Team · · 10 min read

For most Android owners, set up Google Find Hub. It covers the broadest mix of Android phones, tablets, Wear OS watches, headphones and compatible tracker tags. If you use a Galaxy phone, tablet, watch, earbuds or SmartTag, also enable Samsung Find (and, where relevant, SmartThings Find) for Samsung-account features and device-specific support. There is no published, controlled test showing that either service is faster, more accurate or better covered in every location, so the practical choice is based on your devices, accounts, offline settings and country.

What the two services actually are

Google Find Hub

Find Hub is Google’s Android device-finding service. It is tied to the Google Account on a device and can list compatible Android phones and tablets, Wear OS watches, headphones and supported Bluetooth tracker tags. Google’s help documentation says the service can find, secure or erase a lost Android device remotely.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Adding a Google Account normally turns Find Hub on, but you should still confirm that the device is visible in your Google settings and that location and finding permissions remain enabled. The service can use the device’s current connection, an encrypted recent location, or a crowdsourced Android finding network when the relevant offline option is enabled.

Samsung Find and SmartThings Find

Samsung Find is centered on Galaxy hardware and a Samsung Account. Depending on the device and software, it can locate, ring, lock, track updates and erase Galaxy phones and tablets, and it can work with supported Galaxy watches, earbuds and SmartTag families. SmartThings Find is the related Samsung ecosystem service; its sharing and membership controls are not identical to those in the Samsung Find app.

Trigger an 80-100 decibel alert from the built-in speaker via Google Find Hub or Apple's Find My app—ideal for locating items in cluttered spaces like sofa crevices or drawers. Even if the item is out of sight, a single button press activates the smart tracker tag's alert.
  • Simple Setup: This tracker for android or iOS pairs effortlessly with Android or iOS devices in seconds, automatically adapting to your chosen platform (connects to only one platform at a time).

Samsung’s support pages distinguish between features in the Samsung Find app, the SmartThings Find service and their websites. A device list or family-sharing arrangement in one service should not be assumed to appear automatically in the other.

Account Google Account and Android finding settings Samsung Account; SmartThings membership is used for some sharing features
Typical device scope Android phones and tablets, Wear OS watches, headphones and compatible tracker tags Galaxy phones and tablets, supported Galaxy watches and buds, and Galaxy SmartTag families
Offline assistance Encrypted recent locations and a crowdsourced network, with options for busy places, everywhere or no network help; a screen lock is required for network assistance Offline finding can be enabled on eligible Galaxy devices; exact models and regions differ
Powered-off behavior Supported models such as the Pixel 8 series can remain findable for several hours after shutdown when the required Bluetooth, Location and network settings were active Samsung’s US instructions say a powered-off phone or tablet shows only its last known location

Set up Google Find Hub before anything goes missing

Preparation determines whether a map shows a useful current position, an older position or nothing at all. Complete these checks while the phone is in your possession.

  1. Confirm the Google Account. Open the account settings on the phone, verify which Google Account is signed in and make sure the device remains visible in Google Play. This is the account you will need at android.com/find or in the Find Hub app.
  2. Allow the device to be located. In Google’s finding settings, enable the option that allows the device to be located. Keep Location enabled; turning it off removes an important source of positioning data.
  3. Choose an offline-finding mode. Google offers options with no network assistance, finding in busy places, and finding everywhere. Network participation can expose an encrypted location to the owner when the device itself is offline. Select the level that fits your privacy and battery preferences.
  4. Use a screen lock. Google says a PIN, pattern or password is needed for network finding. A strong screen lock also prevents someone who picks up the phone from immediately opening personal accounts.
  5. Check powered-off eligibility. On supported hardware, Google can use Bluetooth beacons and stored credentials for a period after shutdown. Its documented example is the Pixel 8 series. Leave Bluetooth and Location on before shutting down and select one of the network-finding modes. Do not generalize this behavior to every Android model.
  6. Prepare account recovery. Test that you can sign in from a browser and that your two-step-verification recovery method is available. Google also documents guest sign-in so a friend can help from another Android device.

Set up Samsung Find or SmartThings Find on a Galaxy device

  1. Add the Samsung Account. Sign in to the account you intend to use for finding. If several accounts are present, record which one owns the device in Samsung’s device list.
  2. Enable the three lost-device controls. Samsung’s US instructions place Allow this phone (or tablet) to be found, Send last location and Offline finding under Lost device protection. Menu wording can vary by Galaxy model and One UI version, so search Settings for “Lost device protection” if the path differs.
  3. Keep the phone connected during normal use. Samsung’s documented finding flow expects the phone or tablet to be powered on and connected to a stable network. If it is powered off, the US help page says only the last known location is available.
  4. Test the web service. Sign in to Samsung Find or SmartThings Find before an emergency and confirm that the expected device appears. This also reveals whether you are using the Samsung Account and service you intended.
  5. Check country and model support. Samsung says availability can vary by country, region and carrier. Its UK Offline Finding page lists supported families of Galaxy phones, tablets, watches, buds and SmartTags; eligibility is model-specific and can change.

How offline finding differs

Google’s network options

Find Hub can store an encrypted recent location and use nearby participating Android devices to report a lost device or tracker. Google presents network choices that limit participation to busy places, extend it everywhere, or turn network help off. The network does not make the missing phone continuously visible; it supplies a location when another compatible device detects it and reports it through the protected system.

  • 💧 IP65 Waterproof – It provides protection against rainwaterand splashes
  • 🔊 Visualize Distance – Visualize distance using UWB technology within Bluetooth range, allowing you to immediately see the distance

A screen lock is part of Google’s requirement for network finding. Without Location, Bluetooth or the selected network mode, offline assistance may not work. A map point can also be old, estimated or imprecise.

Samsung’s Offline Finding

Samsung’s Offline finding setting allows eligible Galaxy devices and accessories to help locate one another. Samsung’s UK documentation names supported Galaxy device families, wearables, earbuds and all SmartTag series, while warning that country, carrier and model eligibility differ. A Find Node device can relay a detection but does not provide an exact location by itself.

Do not confuse “offline” with live tracking. Samsung’s US phone-and-tablet instructions state that a powered-off device has only its last known location. That statement applies to the documented US flow; another model or region may expose different capabilities, so check the support page for the exact device.

Powered-off phones are model-specific

Google specifically documents several-hours-after-shutdown finding for supported devices such as the Pixel 8 series when Bluetooth and Location were on and an appropriate offline network mode had been selected. This is not a promise for all Android phones. Samsung’s US guidance takes the more limited position that a powered-off phone or tablet shows its last known location.

What to do when a phone, tablet or watch is missing

  1. Open the service tied to the device. Use the matching Google Account in Find Hub or the matching Samsung Account in Samsung Find/SmartThings Find. If you prepared both services, check both device lists; they may show different accessories or last reports.
  2. Check the map and its timestamp. A current position is not guaranteed. Google explains that GPS can locate to around 20 metres in favorable conditions, while a mobile-tower estimate may be accurate only to a few thousand metres. GPS can also be unreliable indoors or underground.
  3. Ring it if it may be nearby. Google says the Find Hub sound plays at full volume for five minutes, even if the phone was muted. Samsung documents a one-minute ring that also sounds when the phone is muted or vibrating. These are vendor-stated durations, not evidence that one service finds devices faster.
  4. Lock or mark it as lost. Add a message and a contact method where the service allows it. Locking protects accounts while leaving a chance to recover the hardware. Do not put sensitive information in a lock-screen message.
  5. Use tracking updates carefully. A changing position can indicate movement, but an old point or a relay detection may not show the device’s exact location. If theft is suspected, do not confront anyone at the map location. Samsung advises informing authorities and allowing them to retrieve a stolen phone or tablet.
  6. Erase only when recovery is no longer worth the risk. Google says erasing permanently deletes device data and that a factory-reset device is no longer available in Find Hub. Samsung provides an erase-data control for prepared devices. Treat erasure as a final step because it can end future finding.
  7. Contact the carrier. Ask about suspending service and, if appropriate, blocking the handset by IMEI. Google notes that a carrier can use the IMEI to disable a device; Samsung likewise suggests contacting the carrier when a phone remains missing.

Which service should you use?

Choose Google Find Hub as your baseline if you use mixed Android hardware

Find Hub is the more practical single setup for households with phones from different Android manufacturers, Wear OS watches, headphones and non-Samsung tracker tags. It gives those devices one Google-account workflow and offers guest access when you need another person’s phone to help.

Add Samsung Find if you own Galaxy hardware

Galaxy owners should enable Samsung’s controls even when Find Hub is already active. Samsung’s service can expose Galaxy-specific controls, Samsung-account relationships, SmartTag support and sharing options that are not necessarily mirrored in Google’s list. Running both does not create a tested speed advantage; it increases the chance that the right account, accessory or manufacturer-specific feature is available when needed.

Use both when your device inventory spans ecosystems

There is no requirement to choose one exclusively. A Galaxy phone can be prepared in both services, while a household’s other Android devices may appear only in Find Hub. Keep the account credentials, recovery methods and offline settings documented so you know which service to open first.

Tracker tags: useful for belongings, not required for phones

A compatible Bluetooth tracker tag can help locate keys, luggage, bicycles and other belongings through the same type of finding network. You do not need a tag to find a phone.

Google says Ultra-wideband directional finding works only when both the phone and tag support it. Its examples of compatible phones include Pixel 8 series and later (Pro models only), Samsung Galaxy S21 series and later (Plus and Ultra models only), and selected Motorola Edge and Razr models. Compatibility still depends on the individual tag and phone.

Samsung’s UK support information lists all Galaxy SmartTag series as supported for Offline Finding. Samsung’s app help says a SmartTag must first be registered with SmartThings before direct use or family sharing. Confirm the current model and regional support before buying or assigning a tag.

Google advises against using tracker tags to track pets or locate stolen items. A tag is an aid for belongings, not a substitute for reporting theft or using lawful recovery procedures.

Sharing, web access and account safety

Google provides a web interface, the Find Hub Android app and guest sign-in on another Android device. Samsung provides web access too, but says some app features, including the People tab, are unavailable on the web. SmartThings Find sharing and Samsung Find sharing use different account structures, so set up the method your household will actually use rather than assuming one list synchronizes to the other.

Protect both accounts with strong, unique passwords and a working two-step-verification recovery method. Anyone who gains account access may be able to see device locations or trigger remote actions. Conversely, if two-step verification depends on the missing phone, recovery codes or another trusted method become essential.

Limits you should understand before relying on either service

  • Neither vendor’s help pages establish a recovery rate, average finding time, local network density or universal accuracy advantage.
  • Network coverage depends on nearby participating devices, radio conditions, battery state, settings and regional support.
  • Location estimates can be wrong indoors, underground or when a device has moved since its last report.
  • Offline and powered-off behavior is model-, software- and region-dependent. A feature shown for one Pixel or Galaxy family should not be generalized.
  • Samsung Find and SmartThings Find are related but not interchangeable; account membership and sharing can differ.
  • Erasing protects data but can remove the device from future finding, so use it only after considering the consequences.

A practical decision checklist

  • List every phone, tablet, watch, earbud set and tracker you may need to find.
  • Record the Google Account and Samsung Account signed in on each device.
  • Enable Location, Bluetooth, a screen lock and the appropriate offline-finding option.
  • Confirm Allow this phone (or tablet) to be found, Send last location and Offline finding on Galaxy devices.
  • Test both web dashboards while the devices are nearby.
  • Save account-recovery codes somewhere that is not the phone itself.
  • Decide in advance when you would lock, report, erase or contact the carrier.
