Launch coverage says Google prioritized other features after reportedly finding that fewer than 1% of Charge 6 users used payments. The tracker still includes substantial health monitoring, GPS and safety alerts, but it is not a substitute for Pixel Watch’s LTE-connected emergency communications.
Why Fitbit Edge has no NFC
NFC is the radio that enables a wearable to communicate with a payment terminal. Without it, Fitbit Edge cannot store or transmit a payment token for contactless checkout, so Google Wallet tap-to-pay is unavailable on the tracker.

Google’s own announcement does not publish a direct explanation for the missing NFC chip. However, AndroidPure, citing Android Police, reported that Google said other capabilities took priority and that fewer than 1% of Charge 6 users reportedly used the payment feature. That percentage is secondary reporting about Google’s rationale, not a usage figure stated on Google’s launch page.
The omission is therefore a product-positioning decision rather than a software setting that can be enabled later. An update cannot add NFC hardware, and pairing Edge with an NFC-equipped phone does not turn the band into a payment device.

Can Fitbit Edge use Google Wallet?
No. Edge has no NFC and cannot perform Google Wallet contactless payments. You can continue using Google Wallet on a compatible phone or another wearable with the necessary NFC hardware, but Edge itself cannot tap at a payment terminal.
Which health and safety features Edge does include
Google’s Store listing positions Edge as a fitness tracker with smartwatch-like health tools rather than a full emergency-communications device. Listed functions include:
- High- and low-heart-rate alerts
- Irregular Rhythm Notifications
- Loss of Pulse Detection
- Breathing Emergency
- Built-in GPS
- An altimeter for elevation data
These functions can identify a potential health event or notify you about an unusual reading. They should not be treated as a diagnosis or as a guaranteed rescue service. Google’s safety guidance also warns that heart-rate tracking may pose risks for some people with health conditions; anyone with medical concerns should follow advice from a qualified clinician.

Does Fitbit Edge have fall detection or emergency calling?
The official Edge listing describes health alerts, but it does not document the same fall-detection and emergency-calling stack described for Pixel Watch. In practical terms, Edge can generate an on-device or app-based health warning, while Pixel Watch is designed to add communications that can reach emergency services under supported conditions.
Google’s Pixel Watch documentation connects emergency calling and related safety functions to LTE or a connected phone, Emergency Location Service, and regional and network availability. Google has also said that an unacknowledged Breathing Emergency alert can prompt a connected phone or an LTE watch to call emergency services. Those requirements are materially different from an alert produced by a tracker without its own emergency communications path.
AndroidPure’s account, again citing Android Police, attributes Google’s explanation to the need for deeper LTE and Wi-Fi integration so the device can contact emergency services on the wearer’s behalf. That explains why Google keeps the deeper emergency stack in Pixel Watch rather than presenting Edge as a standalone safety communicator.

How Edge compares with Pixel Watch
| Capability | Fitbit Edge | Pixel Watch |
|---|---|---|
| Contactless payments | No NFC; Google Wallet tap-to-pay is unavailable. | Payment support depends on the specific model and region; verify compatibility before relying on it. |
| Health monitoring | Heart-rate alerts, Irregular Rhythm Notifications, Loss of Pulse Detection, Breathing Emergency, GPS and altimeter are listed by Google. | Offers the broader smartwatch health and app ecosystem, with model-specific capabilities. |
| Emergency communications | Official Edge materials list health alerts, not the Pixel Watch LTE emergency-contact stack. | Supported LTE models can provide emergency calling without a nearby phone; phone, network, location-service and regional requirements apply. |
| Battery and thickness | Google claims up to seven days of battery life and 11.5 mm thickness. | Designed as a smartwatch with more connectivity and typically more frequent charging. |
| Weight claim | Google says Edge is 45% lighter than Apple Watch Series 12. | Weight varies by model and configuration. |
| Phone compatibility | Google’s launch material lists Android 11 or newer and iOS 16.4 or newer. | Compatibility depends on Pixel Watch generation and phone requirements. |
The battery, thickness and weight figures are Google’s published claims, not independent test results. Actual endurance depends on GPS use, notifications, display behavior and other settings.

Choose Edge if tracking and battery life come first
Edge makes sense for someone who wants a display, GPS and health monitoring in a thinner device that Google rates for up to a week between charges. It can provide useful alerts without the size, charging schedule or connectivity emphasis of a smartwatch. It is a poor fit if paying from the wrist is a requirement.
Choose Pixel Watch if emergency connectivity matters
Pixel Watch is the more appropriate category for users who specifically need a wearable that can communicate with emergency services, subject to LTE availability, a supported network, location-service coverage and regional rules. Confirm the exact model and whether an LTE plan is required before purchase; not every Pixel Watch configuration has identical safety functions.

Do not buy either device as a medical replacement
Heart-rate and rhythm notifications are screening and alert features. They can be useful prompts to seek help, but they do not replace clinical testing, a physician’s assessment or a dedicated medical device.

Google’s security-update table lists Fitbit Edge through October 2028 under its policy of supporting a device for two years after its last sale. That is a software-security horizon, not a promise that every service or feature will remain unchanged for that entire period.
Bottom line for buyers
Fitbit Edge is a focused tracker, not a cut-down payment watch. The missing NFC permanently rules out Google Wallet tap-to-pay, while the lack of Pixel Watch’s LTE- and phone-assisted emergency stack limits it to health and safety alerts rather than full emergency response. Buy Edge for its lighter form factor, GPS, health sensors and claimed week-long battery; choose Pixel Watch when wrist payments or supported emergency calling are essential.
