Choose Microsoft Flight Simulator when you want structured flights, aircraft systems, weather, charts and a more complete planning workflow.
At a glance: exploration tool or full flight simulator?
The two products share the word “flight,” but they solve different problems. Google Earth’s current web simulator puts you over Google’s globe and lets you steer through streamed map data. Google describes it as experimental and says it is designed for casual exploration rather than high-fidelity aerodynamic training. Its flight model is simplified, and the feature is intentionally easy to start.

Microsoft Flight Simulator is built as a dedicated flight-simulation product. In Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, the Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) provides a planning and information workspace for routes, airports, fuel, payload, procedures, weather, charts and checklists. That extra depth makes it suitable for users who want a planned flight rather than an aerial sightseeing session.
The practical distinction is simple: Google Earth starts with a place you want to see, while Microsoft Flight Simulator starts with an aircraft and a flight you want to prepare. Neither product should be judged as though it were trying to do the other’s job.

Google Earth has two different flight-simulator experiences
A common source of confusion is that Google documents both a newer web feature and a separate desktop application feature. They should not be treated as one simulator with identical aircraft and controls.
The experimental Google Earth web simulator
The current web feature is launched from Google Earth on a computer. It uses keyboard and mouse-guided input, streams buildings and high-resolution imagery as you move, and labels itself experimental. Google warns that pre-general-availability features can change and may have limited support.
The web experience starts with an abstract default basemap. Switching from Map to Satellite reveals satellite imagery while you fly. Because scenery is loaded dynamically, a slow connection can delay buildings or imagery. Google also notes that extreme speeds can temporarily outpace loading.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThis means the web simulator is best understood as an interactive layer on top of Google Earth’s geographic data. It is not a separate aircraft-training package with a published fleet, detailed systems model or formal lesson structure. The attraction is the immediate relationship between the aircraft and a recognizable place.
The separate desktop Google Earth simulator
Google’s desktop help documentation describes a different simulator reached through Tools → Enter Flight Simulator or its keyboard shortcut. That desktop version documents a Cirrus SR22 and an F-16, lets you choose a starting location, and includes joystick or mouse-and-keyboard setup plus a heads-up display.
Those aircraft and desktop setup instructions do not establish that the web experiment offers an SR22 or F-16. If you are using Google Earth in a browser, follow the web feature’s instructions rather than assuming the desktop aircraft menu is available.
The distinction also matters when troubleshooting. A control or aircraft shown in a desktop help article may be correct for that desktop experience but irrelevant to the experimental browser feature. Identify which Google Earth version you opened before changing settings or buying hardware.
How to start flying in Google Earth on the web
The browser-based simulator takes only a few steps, but it has a strict device requirement: use a desktop computer. Google says the feature is not supported on phones, tablets or the Google Earth mobile app.
- Open Google Earth on a computer.
- Select Explore Earth.
- Open Tools.
- Select Flight simulator.
- For satellite scenery, change the basemap from Map to Satellite.
The documented web controls are:
| Action | Key or input |
|---|---|
| Increase thrust | Page Up |
| Decrease thrust | Page Down |
| Pitch up or down | Up and Down arrow keys |
| Bank left or right | Left and Right arrow keys |
| Switch control mode | Click inside the simulation to toggle mouse-guided and keyboard controls |
If the aircraft strikes terrain, the simulator pauses and offers a restart at safe coordinates and altitude. That recovery option is useful for sightseeing, where an accidental collision should not require reopening the feature.
For a smoother first session, begin at moderate speed, allow the initial buildings and imagery to appear, and then increase thrust. Flying at extreme speed immediately can move the aircraft beyond the scenery that has finished loading. That is a streaming limitation, not evidence that the destination lacks imagery.
What Google Earth’s web simulator does well—and where it stops
Its strength is immediate geographic exploration
You can open a browser, choose a place and begin looking at the terrain and buildings from the air without preparing a flight plan. The connection between the aircraft and Google’s map imagery makes the feature useful for getting a sense of a city, coastline, landmark or neighborhood from above.

- ADAPTED FOR ALL FLIGHT SIMULATION TYPES – Adjustable joystick resistance and ergonomically placed buttons deliver precise control across all aircraft categories. Ideal for commercial aviation, combat jets, and helicopters, making it perfect for both beginner pilots and seasoned flight sim enthusiasts.
The low setup cost also makes it suitable for a short session. You do not need a joystick: Google’s web documentation describes keyboard and mouse-guided controls. A physical flight-control device may feel more natural, but it is not a prerequisite for this feature.
It is also a convenient way to demonstrate geography. Someone who wants to compare a coastline, follow a river or look at a city’s layout can concentrate on the location instead of learning aircraft menus, navigation equipment or procedures first.
It is not a high-fidelity aerodynamic trainer
Google’s own description is the important boundary: “The flight simulator is designed for casual exploration rather than high-fidelity aerodynamic training.” The simplified flight physics are appropriate for a map-based experience, not evidence that the simulator reproduces real aircraft behavior or qualifies a user for real-world flying.
Scenery streaming is another practical limitation. High-resolution imagery and 3D buildings are loaded as needed, so low bandwidth or very high speed can produce temporary loading delays. That behavior is normal for the web feature and does not indicate that a particular location is missing permanently.

There is no documented web equivalent of Microsoft’s EFB workflow for selecting procedures, balancing fuel and payload, reviewing charts or sending a route to simulated avionics. If those tasks are central to your idea of a flight simulator, Google Earth’s web feature will feel intentionally limited.
What Microsoft Flight Simulator adds
Microsoft Flight Simulator is organized around a fuller simulation loop: select an aircraft, prepare a flight, configure it, fly it and use cockpit or avionics information along the way. The most concrete difference in the current documentation is Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024’s EFB.
Route and airport planning in the 2024 EFB
The EFB lets you create a route and set a cruising altitude, departure airport and destination airport. You can select runways and procedures, then review the resulting plan before departure. This is a planning workflow rather than simply steering over a map.
It also supports fuel and payload settings. Those values connect the preparation stage to the aircraft’s simulated operating condition, giving the user more to manage than thrust and direction alone. A user who enjoys preparation can therefore spend time configuring the flight before the aircraft ever leaves the runway.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The EFB’s airport-oriented workflow is another important contrast. Google Earth begins with a geographic view and basic controls; Microsoft’s documented workflow begins with departure and destination choices, then builds out the details between them.
Weather, charts and checklists
Airport weather and charts are available through the EFB, along with checklists and other flight information. These tools keep relevant information in the simulator instead of requiring a separate map or browser tab for every task.
That does not mean every aircraft or every edition exposes identical information. The documented feature set applies specifically to Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, so check the release you intend to play rather than assuming an older or different edition has the same EFB implementation.

Sending a plan to avionics or in-sim ATC
After reviewing a route, users can send it to the aircraft’s avionics or file it with the simulator’s air-traffic-control system. Microsoft specifically cautions that automatically generated routes are not always correct. Check the route before sending it to avionics or filing it with in-sim ATC; an automated result should be treated as a starting point, not as an error-proof plan.
This review step is an important difference in user responsibility. Microsoft provides more planning automation, but automation does not remove the need to inspect the airports, procedures, altitude and route that the EFB produces.
This is still a simulator workflow. The EFB’s route, weather and chart features should not be presented as real-world flight-planning advice or as a substitute for aviation training and certified sources.
Controls and hardware: keyboard convenience versus cockpit peripherals
Google Earth web controls
Google’s web simulator is designed around the keyboard and mouse. Page Up and Page Down manage thrust, the arrow keys control pitch and bank, and clicking in the simulation changes between mouse-guided and keyboard control. This arrangement favors accessibility and quick exploration over precise physical control.
Because the web feature documents those inputs directly, a user can test it without first selecting a joystick, yoke or pedals. If the controls feel unfamiliar, the safest first step is to reduce thrust and practice small arrow-key inputs over a clear area rather than assuming a peripheral is missing.
Recommended Free Tools
Microsoft Flight Simulator peripherals
Microsoft support lists flight-control peripherals such as joysticks, yokes and pedals as supported or recommended options. A joystick is optional rather than mandatory: you can begin with available input devices, then add physical controls if you want finer handling or a more cockpit-like setup. Microsoft support names examples including the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro and peripherals from other flight-control manufacturers, but the documentation does not make any one device a requirement.
In practical terms, a joystick changes how you interact with Microsoft Flight Simulator; it does not turn Google Earth’s web experiment into a high-fidelity simulator. Google’s feature remains browser-based with simplified physics regardless of whether a user owns flight hardware.
Do not treat a peripheral recommendation as a purchase requirement. Hardware compatibility depends on the Microsoft edition and platform, and the appropriate choice depends on whether you want a simple stick, a yoke-and-pedal arrangement or no dedicated hardware at all.
World loading, performance and access requirements
Google Earth’s browser and connection considerations
- Use a desktop web browser; mobile devices and the Google Earth mobile app are not supported for the web simulator.
- Expect buildings and high-resolution imagery to load dynamically as the aircraft moves.
- Low bandwidth can delay scenery, and very high speeds can temporarily move the aircraft ahead of loaded content.
- The feature is experimental, so availability, controls or behavior can change and support may be limited.
- Switch to the Satellite basemap when you want satellite imagery instead of the abstract default map.
These requirements make Google Earth easy to try but dependent on the browser session and connection. A temporary blank patch or late-arriving building is more likely to be a loading delay than a crash or permanent data problem.
Microsoft Flight Simulator platform considerations
Microsoft’s PC requirements are published as minimum, recommended and ideal hardware tiers, but they are version- and platform-specific. Do not apply an old PC figure universally to every edition. Check the requirements for the exact Microsoft Flight Simulator release and platform you plan to use.
Microsoft also documents multiple platforms and cloud-gaming access where supported. Cloud availability varies by region and service support, so confirm that the edition, account and location you intend to use are eligible before relying on cloud play.

Which one should you choose?
Choose Google Earth’s web simulator if you want to:
- Start flying immediately from a desktop browser.
- Explore real-world places through Google’s map, satellite and 3D-building data.
- Use a keyboard and mouse instead of buying a joystick.
- Spend a few minutes sightseeing without building a route or configuring an aircraft.
- Accept simplified physics and occasional scenery-loading delays.
- Recover quickly from a terrain collision by restarting at safe coordinates and altitude.
Choose Microsoft Flight Simulator if you want to:
- Plan flights between airports with a defined altitude and route.
- Set fuel and payload as part of aircraft preparation.
- Work with airport weather, charts, procedures and checklists.
- Send a reviewed route to simulated avionics or in-sim ATC.
- Use a joystick, yoke or pedals for more physical control.
- Spend time learning a broader simulation workflow rather than only sightseeing.
- Check platform, edition, regional cloud access and hardware requirements before committing.
Common points of confusion and avoidable pitfalls
“Google Earth has an F-16, so the web simulator must have one.”
Not necessarily. The F-16 and Cirrus SR22 are documented on Google’s separate desktop help page. The current web feature is documented independently as an experimental browser simulator. Keep the aircraft lists tied to the desktop experience unless Google’s web documentation explicitly adds them.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
“A route generated by Microsoft’s EFB is automatically valid.”
No. Microsoft warns that automatically generated routes may be incorrect. Review the route before sending it to avionics or filing it with in-sim ATC.
“A joystick is required for either simulator.”
Google’s web simulator documents keyboard and mouse-guided controls, so a joystick is not required there. Microsoft supports and recommends a range of physical peripherals, but you can begin without one and add hardware later.
“Either simulator can train me to fly a real aircraft.”
Google explicitly positions its web feature as casual exploration rather than high-fidelity aerodynamic training. Microsoft Flight Simulator offers a deeper simulated workflow, but the features described here remain in-sim tools and should not be treated as certified real-world instruction.
“If scenery is slow, the location is unavailable.”
Not necessarily. Google dynamically loads buildings and high-resolution imagery. Low bandwidth or extreme speed can temporarily delay what appears on screen. Slow down, allow the scene to load and then continue before concluding that the place is missing.
“The 2024 EFB description applies to every Microsoft version.”
The documented route, fuel, payload, weather, chart and checklist workflow is specifically an example from Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024. Confirm the edition and platform you are using before relying on a particular EFB function.
Bottom line for the decision
Google Earth’s web flight simulator is the fastest route to an aerial tour: open it on a desktop, switch to satellite imagery if desired, and use the keyboard or mouse to explore. Its experimental status, simplified physics and dynamically loaded scenery define its limits.
Microsoft Flight Simulator is the better fit for users who want the activity of preparing and conducting a simulated flight. The 2024 EFB’s routes, airports, procedures, fuel, payload, weather, charts and checklists create a planning layer that Google Earth’s web feature does not document. The trade-off is a larger software and hardware commitment, plus the need to verify the edition, platform, requirements and any automatically generated route.
