In desktop Google Earth, open Tools > Enter Flight Simulator (or press Ctrl + Alt + A on Windows/Linux, ⌘ + Option + A on Mac). Use Page Up for thrust, the mouse for pitch, and the arrow keys for small directional corrections. In the web simulator, choose Explore Earth > Tools > Flight simulator; Page Up/Page Down control thrust, the up/down arrows control pitch, and the left/right arrows roll the aircraft. The sections below keep those two control schemes separate.
First identify which Google Earth simulator you opened
Google documents a desktop simulator in the installed Google Earth application and a separate experimental simulator in Google Earth on the web. Their entry commands, aircraft setup, and keyboard behavior differ, so a shortcut that works in one should not be assumed to work in the other.

| Version | How to open it | Main documented controls | What you can configure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Desktop Google Earth | Tools > Enter Flight Simulator, or Ctrl + Alt + A on Windows/Linux; ⌘ + Option + A on Mac | Page Up for thrust, mouse for pitch, arrows for corrections; Spacebar pauses | Aircraft, starting location, mouse/keyboard, and optional joystick |
| Google Earth web (experimental) | Explore Earth > Tools > Flight simulator | Page Up/Page Down for thrust; up/down arrows for pitch; left/right arrows for roll | Keyboard or mouse control focus and map style; the documented page does not promise desktop-style aircraft or joystick options |
These entry paths and control descriptions come from Google Earth Help and Google for Developers. The web page labels its simulator experimental, so its interface can change independently of the installed application.
Desktop Google Earth: start the simulator correctly
Requirements and controller choices
Google’s desktop guide lists Google Earth installed on Mac, Windows, or Linux, plus a mouse or joystick and a keyboard. A joystick is optional rather than mandatory. If you connect one, turn on Joystick support in the simulator options; otherwise the mouse and keyboard are sufficient. Google does not identify a particular joystick model as universally compatible, so treat hardware support as version- and system-dependent.

Choose the aircraft and launch point first
Select an aircraft and a starting location before entering the simulator. Google suggests the SR22 for beginners and the F-16 for skilled pilots. The desktop help says you must exit the simulator before changing the aircraft, starting location, or controller, so make those choices before takeoff rather than trying to change them while airborne.
Open and close the flight simulator
- Launch the installed Google Earth application.
- Open Tools > Enter Flight Simulator, or use Ctrl + Alt + A on Windows/Linux or ⌘ + Option + A on Mac.
- Choose the aircraft and starting location in the simulator dialog, then start the flight.
- To leave, use the same keyboard shortcut for your operating system or click Exit flight simulator.
If the shortcut does nothing, use the menu command. It confirms that the installed application has focus and avoids conflicts with another program that may intercept a three-key combination.

Desktop controls: what every key and movement does
| Action | Control | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Increase thrust and taxi | Page Up | Hold or press it to build engine power and begin moving along the ground. |
| Pitch the aircraft | Move the mouse | Move the mouse slightly down once moving to raise the nose for takeoff; use small movements in flight. |
| Directional corrections and banking | Arrow keys | Use small taps for corrections when turning or banking rather than holding a key for a long time. |
| Slow looking turns | Arrow key + Alt | Turns slowly while you look around. |
| Fast looking turns | Arrow key + Ctrl | Turns quickly while looking around. |
| Pause or resume | Spacebar | Freezes the simulation and resumes it when pressed again. |
| Exit | Operating-system shortcut or Exit flight simulator | Use Ctrl + Alt + A on Windows/Linux, ⌘ + Option + A on Mac, or the on-screen exit command. |
The desktop simulator uses relative mouse motion rather than a permanent on-screen joystick. Place the pointer at the center of the screen and click once to take control. After the aircraft reaches altitude and feels steady, center the mouse again. Large, sudden mouse movements can produce excessive pitch, while gentle movements make it easier to keep the nose and bank under control.
A conservative desktop takeoff
- Press Page Up to increase thrust and taxi.
- When the aircraft is moving, move the mouse slightly downward to raise the nose.
- After liftoff, center the mouse so the aircraft does not continue pitching unintentionally.
- Use brief arrow-key inputs for heading or bank corrections. If you need to look around without making a rapid change, use an arrow with Alt; use Ctrl only when a faster turn is wanted.
This is guidance for operating a software interface, not flight training or a substitute for real-world aviation instruction.

Reading the desktop heads-up display
The desktop HUD exposes the information needed to understand why the aircraft is climbing, descending, accelerating, or turning. Google’s help identifies these indicators:
- Heading and speed show direction and movement through the simulation.
- Bank angle shows how far the aircraft is tilted in a turn.
- Vertical speed shows whether altitude is increasing or decreasing and how quickly.
- Throttle, rudder, aileron, and elevator indicators show the current control inputs.
- Flap and gear indicators show the relevant aircraft configuration.
- Pitch and altitude show nose attitude and height above the simulated terrain.
Use the HUD to make small corrections: if altitude is changing when you did not intend it, first check pitch and vertical speed, then recenter the mouse before adding another input.

Google Earth web simulator: controls and entry path
Open the web version
- Open Google Earth in a supported desktop web browser.
- Choose Explore Earth > Tools > Flight simulator.
- Click inside the simulation to give the flight area focus.
The click is important because the web simulator toggles between mouse-guided controls and keyboard controls when you click inside the simulation. If arrow keys are scrolling the page or doing nothing, click the flight area once and try again.

Web keyboard and mouse controls
| Action | Control |
|---|---|
| Increase thrust | Page Up or the on-screen thrust indicator |
| Decrease thrust | Page Down |
| Pitch up or down | Up and down arrow keys |
| Roll left or right | Left and right arrow keys |
| Switch control focus | Click inside the simulation to toggle mouse-guided and keyboard control |
The web documentation describes thrust, pitch, and roll directly; it does not present the desktop simulator’s Alt– and Ctrl-modified looking turns as web shortcuts. Do not expect the desktop mouse-centering behavior or its aircraft-selection dialog to map one-for-one to the browser experience.

Choose a useful map view in the web simulator
The web simulator starts with an abstract basemap without terrain detail. Open the map-style controls and choose Satellite when you want photorealistic satellite imagery beneath the aircraft. This changes the visual context, not the flight-control mapping.
Some ordinary Google Earth map shortcuts are disabled during flight to prevent collisions with flight controls. In particular, do not rely on historical-imagery toggles or other navigation shortcuts while the simulator has focus. Google’s general keyboard-shortcut page, Use keyboard shortcuts to navigate in Google Earth, covers regular Earth navigation, not the flight simulator’s control scheme.
Desktop and web: the practical differences
| Question | Desktop Google Earth | Web simulator |

Recovering from a crash and handling simulator limits
In the web simulator, a direct impact with terrain pauses the simulation and offers a restart at a safe playable altitude and coordinates. Use that restart instead of repeatedly trying to recover from an unrecoverable position. The restart location is a simulator recovery feature, not a claim that the aircraft has been landed or that the previous flight state is preserved.

Google also warns about visual and loading limitations. At low altitude in areas below sea level, terrain may flash or clip. At extreme speeds, or on a low-bandwidth connection, imagery can take time to load. If the landscape appears incomplete, reduce speed and allow the view to catch up before making aggressive control inputs.
Quick Recap
Troubleshooting checklist
- Shortcut does not open desktop flight mode: confirm that the installed Google Earth window is active, then use Tools > Enter Flight Simulator. Check the correct Mac or Windows/Linux key combination.
- Desktop aircraft immediately pitches away: click once with the pointer centered, use a smaller mouse movement, and recenter after the aircraft stabilizes.
- Arrow keys behave like ordinary page navigation: click inside the web flight area to give it keyboard focus.
- Thrust changes but the aircraft does not respond as expected: verify which simulator you opened. Web pitch uses up/down arrows, whereas desktop pitch is controlled by mouse movement.
- Joystick input is ignored on desktop: enable Joystick support in the simulator settings, reconnect the device, and keep the mouse and keyboard available as a fallback. Google does not guarantee every joystick model.
- Web scenery flickers or arrives late: climb away from very low altitude, reduce extreme speed, and wait for imagery to load, particularly on a low-bandwidth connection.
A compact preflight checklist
- Identify desktop or web before choosing a shortcut.
- On desktop, select the SR22 if you are learning the interface; reserve the F-16 suggestion for experienced simulator users.
- Keep the pointer centered for desktop mouse control and click once to take control.
- Increase thrust gradually with Page Up; in the web simulator, use Page Down when you need to reduce it.
- Make small corrections and watch pitch, bank, vertical speed, and altitude rather than chasing the view with large inputs.
- Use Spacebar to pause a desktop flight before changing your plan, and use the web restart option after a direct terrain impact.
