Google Drive for Windows has started rolling out ARM support via a beta build. If you’re using a Windows on ARM device, that can mean better performance and fewer quirks than running an x86 build through emulation.
This guide focuses on the practical side: what the beta is, how to get it installed, how to confirm you’re actually using the ARM build, and how to troubleshoot when sync acts up.

What ARM support in Google Drive for Windows means
ARM support indicates the Google Drive desktop client has an ARM-native build for Windows. Instead of translating an x86 app at runtime, Windows can run a build compiled for your device’s ARM architecture.
For many users, that translates to smoother UI responsiveness, faster startup, and more consistent background sync—especially on devices like Snapdragon-powered PCs where emulation can add latency or trigger edge-case compatibility problems.

Prerequisites before you install the ARM beta
Before you switch to the beta, make sure your environment can handle it. ARM beta builds usually follow the same core requirements as the stable Google Drive desktop app, but you’ll want to remove avoidable variables.
Hardware and OS basics
- You should be on a Windows on ARM device (e.g., Snapdragon-based PCs).
- Install updates for Windows until you’re current, since background services, networking, and authentication components change over time.
Account and storage prerequisites
- Use a Google account that has access to the Drive content you sync.
- Make sure you have enough free storage on the local sync folder. If space runs out, the beta (or any build) can appear to “hang.”
Desktop client prerequisites
- You need Google Drive for desktop installed (the sync client), not only the browser experience.
- Confirm you can sign in normally to Drive in a browser. If your account authentication is broken, the desktop client will keep failing too.
How to join and install the Google Drive for Windows ARM beta
The exact steps can vary depending on how Google exposes the beta channel on your system, but the workflow is usually: verify your architecture → opt into beta → install the beta build → verify the app is ARM-native.
Check your device and Windows edition
Confirm you’re on ARM so you don’t waste time trying to validate an ARM-specific build on the wrong architecture.
- Press Windows + R, type
msinfo32, then press Enter. - Look for System Type. On an ARM device, you’ll typically see something indicating ARM-based processing.
Alternatively, open Settings → System → About and check the processor details.
Verify you’re using Google Drive for desktop
ARM support is for the Windows sync client. If you’re not running the desktop client, you’ll need to install it first.

- Launch it and confirm you can sign in.
Enable the beta and install
If Google provides a beta option in the desktop client or a dedicated download page, your goal is the same: replace the stable build with a beta build that supports ARM.
- Open Google Drive from the Start menu or system tray.
- Look for a Settings or Preferences area.
- Find the option to switch to or enroll in Beta (wording can differ).
- Apply the change, then let the client download and update itself. A restart may be required.
If the client doesn’t offer beta enrollment, use the official Google-supplied beta distribution method for the Windows desktop client and install that build over your existing version.
Confirm the app is running as ARM (not x86)
After installation, validate you’re actually using ARM-native binaries.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Find the Google Drive process (often shown as a Google Drive-related executable).
- Open the app’s details and look for indicators such as architecture (Task Manager may show this depending on Windows version).
- If you can’t confirm architecture in Task Manager on your build, use the client’s version/build info (within its About/Help pane) and compare it to the beta build number listed by Google.
Performance expectations on ARM devices
You should expect the beta ARM build to feel more “native”: quicker UI interactions and fewer stalls during background sync. Exact gains vary by device, storage type (NVMe vs. eMMC), and network conditions.
As a practical benchmark, watch for improvements in: (1) time from app launch to idle sync, (2) responsiveness when opening Drive folders, and (3) how consistently uploads progress without pausing for translation overhead.

As well as freeing up desktop space, this laptop riser arm features a built-in cable management system to store cable clutter, creating a organised workspace.
What changes (and what doesn’t) compared with x86 builds
ARM support changes how the app runs; it usually doesn’t change how Google Drive works with your files. That said, beta builds can still introduce behavioral differences, so it’s worth knowing what to test after installing.

Sync behavior and file availability
- The same core sync principles apply: selected folders sync to your chosen local location.
- Large file uploads may still take time; ARM-native execution can improve responsiveness, but it can’t accelerate your internet.
- If you use “streaming”/online file access features, test a few representative files to confirm expected availability behavior.
System tray, notifications, and pause/resume
- Tray icons and status indicators should remain consistent with the stable client.
- Test pause/resume to ensure the beta honors your settings without getting stuck in a transitional state.
Permissions and drive letters
Google Drive for desktop typically maps your synced content via a local folder approach rather than the same way classic mapped network drives work. Still, verify that your chosen sync location is writable and that Windows permissions didn’t change after the update.
Common issues and how to fix them
Beta software can behave differently under load. The goal is to isolate whether the issue is authentication, networking, file permissions, or a corrupted local sync state.
Installation fails or beta doesn’t appear
If the beta option is missing, it may be phased rollout or tied to your installed client version.
- Confirm you have the latest stable Google Drive for desktop installed first.
- Restart Windows, then reopen the Drive client and check Settings again.
- Ensure you’re signed into the same Google account you’re trying to sync.
- If the beta installer throws an error, try installing from the official beta download method rather than switching inside the client.
Sync stalls at a certain percentage
When sync stops progressing, the most common culprits are locked files, insufficient disk space, or a problematic file that repeatedly fails validation.

- Check free space on the drive hosting your sync folder.
- Look for files with long names, special characters, or paths that exceed Windows limits.
- Temporarily pause sync, then resume after verifying the affected file isn’t open in another app.
- If only one folder is stuck, move a single problematic file out (outside the sync folder), wait, then add it back.
Files don’t show up in File Explorer
- Verify the sync location path in the Drive client settings.
- Check whether you changed folder selection during the update process. Beta updates can sometimes prompt selection or re-read configuration.
- Confirm Windows Search indexing isn’t masking results. As a test, sort by “Date modified” directly inside the sync directory.
Conflicts and duplicate copies
Conflicts happen when the client can’t reconcile changes between your local folder and Drive. This can occur if you edit the same file on multiple devices while the sync client is mid-update.
- Open the Drive client and look for conflict indicators (usually a highlighted warning or special folder behavior).
- Pick one version to keep, then restore the other with a clean upload after the sync stabilizes.
- Avoid editing during major update windows if possible.
Credentials loop (sign-in keeps repeating)
Authentication issues can look like an “infinite login” loop. Fix it by clearing session state and ensuring the browser can sign in normally.
- Sign out of Drive in the desktop client.
- Sign in to Drive in your browser and confirm everything works.
- Restart the desktop client and sign in again.
- If it persists, uninstall/reinstall the beta client only after exporting/confirming your sync folder path so you don’t accidentally re-create a large download.
Fallback options if ARM beta isn’t stable
If the beta causes repeated sync interruptions or unacceptable delays, you don’t have to stay on it. Use a fallback path to keep your workflow reliable.
Return to the standard Google Drive build
- In the Drive desktop client, switch from Beta back to Stable in Settings (if the option exists).
- Restart the app and verify the build number updates.
- Re-check folder selection and local sync location.
Keep an eye on whether the fallback triggers a re-scan; it’s normal for large libraries to take time after a major build change.

FAQ
Is Google Drive for Windows ARM support available to everyone?
Beta rollouts are often phased. If you don’t see the beta option, confirm you’re on the latest stable Google Drive for desktop first, then check again later.
Will my synced files be deleted when I switch to the beta?
Normally, no. The beta should reuse your existing sync folder and continue syncing. Still, before major changes, verify your local sync path in the Drive client settings.
Does ARM support change Google Drive features like offline access?
Core features should remain the same, but test key behaviors on your setup—especially offline edits, conflicts, and large-file handling—because beta builds can vary in edge cases.

Check the Drive client’s build/version info and compare it with the beta build number Google publishes for the ARM-enabled channel. On many Windows versions, Task Manager can also help confirm process architecture.
What should I do if I’m syncing a lot of data?
Consider a controlled test first: sync a small folder or a representative subset, confirm performance and stability, then expand the beta enrollment to your full library.
Bottom Line
Google Drive for Windows ARM support in beta is a meaningful step for Windows on ARM users who want better desktop sync behavior than x86 emulation can provide. If you try it, validate architecture, test a few folders, and watch conflict/sync status closely during the first hours.
When you run into issues, most fixes come down to authentication, permissions, disk space, and clearing a single problematic file or folder state. If stability becomes a problem, switching back to the stable build is the quickest way to protect your workflow.
