Google News is the better choice when you want a deliberate list of topics, locations, and publishers you can manage in one place. Its Following feed is built for that job: you can follow a source or subject, adjust individual stories, unfollow an interest, and hide a source. Google Discover is better when you want a convenient, mostly passive stream of interest-based updates in the Google app, a mobile browser, or (on some devices) the home screen. It can follow interests and news sites too, but its main purpose is to surface something useful before you search.

That is a feature-based recommendation, not a claim from comparative user testing. Both products combine choices you make with algorithmic selection, and both change by account, device, country, language, and product version.

Google Discover and Google News do different jobs

The names sound interchangeable because both can show news, but the products start from different reader intentions. Google describes Discover as a way to get updates for your interests without searching. It appears in the Google app, at google.com in a mobile browser, and on some phones by swiping right from the home screen. The feed may include news sites, sports, entertainment, shopping, or other subjects that Google predicts you will find useful.

Google News is a news-oriented service available in Android and iOS apps and in browsers. Google positions it as a place to discover current events and coverage from different publishers, follow providers and topics, save and share stories, and personalize sections such as For you. The service has an explicit Following area for the interests you have chosen.

In practical terms, Discover answers “What might interest me now?” Google News answers “What do the subjects and publishers I chose have to say?” You can use both, but they are not equally predictable.

Which service is better for following publishers and topics?

Reader goal Better fit Why Important limitation
Keep a managed list of named publishers and subjects Google News Following combines topics, locations, and sources, with options to unfollow, tune stories, or hide a source. Customization features require you to be signed in.
Receive interest updates without opening search Google Discover Discover is integrated into several Google and mobile surfaces and is designed to deliver updates proactively. The feed is recommendation-led, so the order and mix are less predictable.
Inspect several perspectives on one developing story Google News Full Coverage groups additional resources, perspectives, and context around a story. Individual articles may still be limited by a publisher’s paywall.
Remove an unwanted subject or source Both Discover offers “Not interested” and source-hiding controls where available; News provides story feedback and source hiding. Labels and availability vary by product surface, country, and language.
Have a clearly organized library of followings Google News The Following feed is explicitly organized around followed topics, locations, and sources. Discover also lets you follow interests, but its primary view remains an algorithmic stream.

If “following” means maintaining a dependable watchlist, choose Google News. If it means getting occasional updates with no deliberate reading session, choose Discover.

How Google News handles followed topics and publishers

Following is the control center

In Google News, Following holds the topics, locations, and sources you have selected. You can search for an interest, open a matching result, and follow it. A publisher may be labeled as a source or provider depending on the interface. The same area lets you review what you follow rather than relying only on whatever the recommendation system happens to show.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google’s customization guidance explains that you can tune individual stories and hide every story from a source. Those actions matter when you want to keep a subject but reduce a particular angle, or when one publisher repeatedly appears despite not being useful to you. The controls affect personalization; they do not remove an article from the internet or guarantee that no reference to a subject will ever appear elsewhere in News.

A practical setup sequence

  1. Sign in. Open Google News in the Android or iOS app, or in a browser, and sign in to the Google Account you want to use. Google says customization features require sign-in.
  2. Search for the subject or source. Use the search field to find a topic, location, or publisher. Pick the result that matches your intended interest rather than a similarly named subject.
  3. Follow it. Use the Follow control on the topic, location, or source page. The item should then appear in Following.
  4. Review the feed. Open Following and check that the list contains the interests you actually want. Unfollow items that are too broad or no longer relevant.
  5. Tune stories as you read. Use the story’s feedback menu when coverage is irrelevant or repetitive. Use the source-hiding option if you want to remove that publisher’s stories.

Google’s labels can change as the News interface is updated. The current help page, “Customize what you find on Google News,” is the appropriate reference when a button is in a different location.

Why News is more predictable

Following gives your reading plan a visible structure. You can return to the same subjects and sources even when the day’s recommendation mix changes. That does not make every item manually selected: Google still chooses which stories from a followed interest to display, and sections such as For you also use activity signals. The difference is that your declared followings provide an explicit foundation.

How Google Discover handles followed interests and news sites

Discover is an ambient feed

Discover can show updates for a topic or news site without a query. Google’s official wording is: “With Discover, you can get updates for your interests, like your favorite sports team or news site, without searching for them.” That convenience is the product’s defining strength. You may see cards while checking the Google app or browsing on a phone, without first opening a news section.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Discover can use a follow action for an interest, and cards commonly include controls such as “Not interested” or an option to stop seeing stories from a source. Google cautions that some controls are not available in every country or language. The feed may also contain interests inferred from your activity, so following one news site does not turn Discover into a publisher-only list.

A cautious way to tune Discover

  1. Open the surface you use. Start in the Google app, visit google.com in a mobile browser, or use the home-screen Discover panel if your device provides one.
  2. Find an interest. Search for a subject or open an interest card. When a Follow control is offered, use it to declare that interest.
  3. Give card-level feedback. Open the menu on a card and choose the available “Not interested” or similar option when the subject is wrong for you.
  4. Hide an unwanted source. Use the source-hiding action when the problem is a particular news site rather than the entire topic.
  5. Check account controls. Discover’s settings can include controls for activity-based personalization and recommendations. The exact menu is changing, so compare the labels with the current Google help instructions.

The page “Customize what you find in Discover” carries a warning that its settings instructions are being updated and may not match the current product experience. Treat the steps above as the workflow, not as a promise that every device will show identical buttons.

Personalization: neither feed is completely manual

Google News uses interests and sources set in News alongside past activity on Google services and YouTube. That combination can make For you useful, but it also means two signed-in readers who follow the same publisher may see different selections.

Discover can use device information, other Google product information, and data stored in your Google Account. Google identifies examples such as Search Services History, personalized recommendations, and location settings. You can turn off personalized recommendations through the controls Google provides, although doing so changes the kind of feed you receive rather than converting Discover into a fixed chronological list.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The key distinction is not “manual versus algorithmic.” Both systems blend declared interests with automated ranking. News exposes more of the declared structure through Following; Discover exposes more of the recommendation stream. If you need to know why a particular publisher or subject is in your reading plan, News is easier to audit.

Use Full Coverage when one story needs context

Google News has a feature called Full Coverage for stories that benefit from more than one article. According to Google’s explanation of story selection and its guide to finding content, Full Coverage collects additional resources, perspectives, and context around the same event.

Google says Full Coverage has no personalization beyond language, region, and subscriptions. That makes it a useful route when your goal is to compare how different outlets report a breaking or continuing story, rather than simply receiving the version most aligned with your previous activity. Open the story in Google News and look for the Full Coverage option when it is offered; not every article will have one.

Discover can surface a developing story and link to a publisher, but it is not documented as a dedicated cross-publisher coverage view. For deliberate context gathering, start in News.

Reducing unwanted topics and sources

In Google News

  • Use story feedback when a particular article is irrelevant or repetitive.
  • Unfollow a topic, location, or source from Following when your interest has ended.
  • Hide all stories from a source when the publisher itself is the problem.

In Discover

  • Choose “Not interested” (or the equivalent current label) for a topic you do not want recommended.
  • Hide a source when cards from one news site are the issue.
  • Review personalization and recommendation controls if inferred interests are driving the feed in an unwanted direction.

These actions are feedback signals, not an absolute firewall. A major event may still be mentioned through another source, and the same broad subject can return under a different label. Availability of the controls depends on the surface, country, and language.

Access, account, and regional caveats

Google News availability

Google News is described as available in Android and iOS apps and in browsers, but the Android help documentation says the app is not available in selected countries and gives Denmark and Finland as examples. Do not assume that downloading the app is possible everywhere; a browser route may still differ from app availability and feature support.

Some stories are paid articles. Google News can link to them, but a reader without the required subscription or purchase will not automatically gain access just because the story appears in the feed.

Discover availability

Discover can be reached through the Google app, google.com in a mobile browser, and the home-screen panel on some devices. Google says features may not be available in all countries or languages. The current Discover help page also warns that documented settings are being updated, so verify the menus on the target phone and account before giving someone exact tap-by-tap instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why sign-in matters

Following and personalization are account features. A reader who is signed out, using a different Google Account, or browsing in a region with reduced support may not see the same controls or feed. When troubleshooting, first confirm the account, app or browser surface, country, and language before assuming a follow action failed.

Decision guide: pick the service that matches your habit

Choose Google News if you need a reading list

  • You follow named publishers and want them grouped with topics and locations.
  • You want explicit unfollow, source-hiding, and story-feedback controls.
  • You routinely investigate a breaking story across several outlets.
  • You prefer to open a predictable section instead of waiting for recommendations.

Choose Discover if you want low-effort updates

  • You want news and other interests to appear while you are already using Google on a phone.
  • You rarely want to maintain a formal list of sources.
  • You value discovery of subjects you did not actively search for.
  • You are comfortable with a feed whose ordering and topic mix are algorithmically selected.

Use both when the jobs are separate

A sensible combination is to keep high-priority subjects and trusted publishers in Google News Following, then use Discover as a broader discovery layer. When Discover surfaces an event worth understanding, open it in News and use Full Coverage if available. This division prevents a passive recommendation stream from becoming your only source for a story that needs context, while preserving Discover’s convenience for unexpected updates.

What the services do not promise

Neither product promises a complete record of everything a publisher publishes. Ranking, language, region, subscriptions, account activity, and availability all affect what appears. Following a source does not bypass a paywall, guarantee chronological order, or force every article from that source into the first screen.

Neither is a substitute for checking the original article when accuracy, wording, or publication timing matters. A card is an entry point; the linked publisher remains responsible for the article’s full text and access rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is also no official statistic establishing that one service produces better engagement, satisfaction, or feed quality than the other. The defensible difference is functional: News provides a more explicit following and context workflow, while Discover provides a more passive, integrated stream.

Bottom line

For following topics and publishers, start with Google News. Its Following feed gives you a visible collection of sources, topics, and locations, plus the clearest controls for tuning or hiding what you do not want. Choose Google Discover when the priority is effortless updates without a search, especially on mobile surfaces. Keep in mind that both feeds personalize content, and that country, language, sign-in status, and changing product controls can alter the experience.
