Google has confirmed five media-related changes for Android Auto: broader play and skip controls across media apps, a redesigned player, easier switching between active apps, changes to autoplay, and no immediate retirement of the squiggly progress line. The changes improve how drivers control playback; they do not add a new music or podcast catalog. Availability can vary by car display, Android Auto version, app and account.
What changed in Android Auto media apps?
In a report dated October 2, 2026, 9to5Google said Google confirmed four changes to media controls and autoplay:
| Change | What it means for drivers | Timing or qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Controls for more media apps | Play, pause and skip controls can appear for any media app, including browser audio streams and niche apps. These controls do not provide a way to browse the app’s other content. | Availability may vary by app and Android Auto setup. |
| Redesigned media player | The player gives easier access to playback controls and is designed to fit a wider range of vehicle display sizes. Google names Spotify, YouTube Music and Pocket Casts as apps using it. | Broader rollout began in July 2026; rollout may not be simultaneous for everyone. |
| Swipeable media sessions | Drivers can swipe between active media sessions from the dashboard widget, making it easier to return to another app that is already playing or was active. | Depends on the sessions available in the car’s current Android Auto interface. |
| Autoplay adjustments | Apps that have not been used recently will no longer be selected for autoplay. Android Auto can offer a quick option to disable autoplay after repeated manual stops. | Google also says it is applying a fix for playback that starts even when autoplay is disabled. |
Is the squiggly progress line permanent?
For now, yes: Google confirmed that the squiggly media-progress design is staying. The stated reason is to make it easier to see a track’s current position at a glance. Google is still collecting feedback, so the visual details could change; confirmation that the design is staying does not mean every aspect is frozen.
Why does Android Auto autoplay the wrong app?
Android Auto has been able to resume or select media unexpectedly, including an app the driver did not intend to use. Google’s announced change is meant to avoid selecting apps that have not been used recently. When Android Auto detects that a driver repeatedly stops playback manually, it may offer a quick way to disable autoplay. Google also says a separate fix is being applied for the case where playback starts despite autoplay being disabled.

The announcement does not provide a specific settings path or promise that the fix has reached every car. If the behavior continues, check whether the app is still active on the phone and whether the Android Auto or media-app version has changed; availability and behavior can differ across vehicles and apps.
Can you control browser audio or YouTube from Android Auto?
Android Auto’s expanded media controls can expose basic playback actions for browser audio streams and other apps: play, pause and skip. That is not the same as opening a browser or YouTube interface to search, browse, or choose other content on the car display. The change is about controlling an active media session, not turning every phone app into a full Android Auto app.

Google’s Android Auto help says compatible apps can play music and podcasts through the car. Set up and sign in to the media service on the phone before starting; some services require a subscription or premium account. Google gives these example voice requests:
- “Play my playlist on Spotify.”
- “Play [song name] on Amazon Music.”
- “Play house music on Pandora.”
- “Play [artist] on YouTube Music.”
Those examples refer to supported media services. They do not establish that browser audio or every YouTube experience can be browsed from Android Auto.

- Important Compatibility Check - PLEASE READ: This adapter is ONLY compatible with cars equipped with Factory Wired CarPlay or Android Auto (Model Years 2016-2025). ❌ NOT compatible with BMW, Tesla, or vehicles without a wired system. For Android Users: Requires a phone running Android 11 or later with "Wireless Android Auto" enabled. Includes USB-A to USB-C adapter for wider port compatibility.
What determines when the changes appear?
Google’s October 2026 confirmation describes features that are rolling out or broadly available, not a synchronized release to every driver. The car’s display, Android Auto version, media app and account can all affect what appears. A missing control or redesigned screen therefore does not, by itself, show that a feature has been withdrawn.
There is also a distinction between Android Auto and Android Automotive OS. Google’s Android Developers log says that on May 19, 2026, media apps built with Car App Library became available on Android Automotive OS with Car App Library 1.9 experiences, while video-app experiences for Android Auto entered an early-access path. The log also records beta guidance published May 21, 2025, for templated media apps with more customizable formatting, browsing abilities and expanded custom actions. These developer updates describe app-building capabilities and platform availability; they do not mean that every media app or video app is available to every Android Auto driver.
