There is no universal winner. Choose Google Cloud TPU, AWS Trainium, or an NVIDIA GPU only after checking your model’s operators, framework and compiler path, memory and interconnect needs, deployment region, and measured end-to-end cost. A representative benchmark on the exact model and target configuration is more reliable than peak-FLOPS figures or a vendor price claim.

Quick comparison

The three options solve overlapping but not identical problems. Google documents TPU v6e (Trillium) for transformer, text-to-image, and convolutional-neural-network training, fine-tuning, and serving. AWS positions Trn2 instances, built with Trainium2, for generative-AI training and inference. The NVIDIA evidence considered here is narrower: AWS EC2 lists instances equipped with H100 and B200 GPUs, but that listing does not establish a complete comparison of NVIDIA platforms, software stacks, prices, or performance.

  • Model architecture and exact version, including custom layers, attention variants, tokenizers and preprocessing.
  • Training, fine-tuning, batch inference or online serving; sequence length or image dimensions; context-window growth; and expected concurrency.
  • Numerical precision (for example BF16, FP16, FP8 or mixed precision), optimizer state, activation checkpointing and quantization.
  • Target metric: samples or tokens per second for training, or p50/p95 latency and requests per second for serving.
  • Dataset and checkpoint sizes, storage format, read/write rate, checkpoint frequency and recovery-time objective.
  • Target region, availability deadline, data-residency requirements, network-egress pattern and the team’s existing cloud skills.

This inventory determines whether memory capacity, compiler coverage, collective communication, storage throughput or operational simplicity is the limiting factor. A chip with higher theoretical throughput can lose on a model that spends time in unsupported operators, host-to-device transfers or synchronization.

Google Cloud TPU v6e (Trillium)

What Google documents

Google’s TPU v6e documentation describes Trillium for transformer, text-to-image and convolutional-neural-network training, fine-tuning and serving. It lists 918 TFLOPs of BF16 peak compute per chip and 32 GB of HBM per chip. Google presents those as hardware specifications; they are not application benchmarks and do not predict your model’s throughput by themselves.

Use the v6e figures as a capacity check. A model whose parameters, optimizer states, activations and safety margin exceed the available HBM will need sharding, a larger slice, offloading or a different configuration. HBM capacity is only one part of the design: inter-chip communication, host memory, input pipelines and checkpoint storage can become the bottleneck at scale.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Framework and runtime considerations

Google provides JAX and PyTorch workflows for TPU v6e. Its TPU software-version documentation lists runtime versions by TPU generation, so do not assume that an installation command or wheel documented for one generation applies to another. Verify the exact framework, XLA compiler, Python version, accelerator runtime and library releases in the image you intend to deploy.

The training documentation also cautions that the Cloud TPU API is no longer under active development and is not supported on TPU7x and later; Google recommends Compute Engine or Google Kubernetes Engine for current features and newer TPU versions. That caveat makes the provisioning interface a design decision, not a minor setup detail. If you need current orchestration features, confirm that your selected TPU generation and management service support them before writing automation.

Provisioning, quota and capacity

Google’s resource-planning guidance describes Flex-start, Spot and reservations, along with quota requirements and different capacity-management responsibilities. Flex-start can suit interruptible or queued work; Spot can reduce infrastructure cost when your training can resume after eviction; reservations are intended for predictable access. The exact economics and availability depend on region and product.

How TPU pricing should be read

Google’s TPU pricing page states that prices vary by product, deployment model and region, and displays prices per chip-hour in US dollars. A chip-hour is not equivalent to an AWS instance-hour or to the cost of completing one training run. Your estimate must include the number of chips, host resources, storage, networking, utilization, startup time, idle periods, reservations and engineering effort. Use the price page for the exact region and TPU product at the time of purchase; do not transfer a figure from one generation or location to another.

AWS Trainium2 and Trn2 instances

Hardware and scale

AWS describes EC2 Trn2 instances as using 16 Trainium2 chips for generative-AI training and deployment. The product page lists up to 20.8 FP8 petaflops per Trn2 instance, 1.5 TB of total accelerator memory and 46 TB/s of total memory bandwidth. These are AWS-published specifications, with no publication year stated on the live page; they are not a common-model benchmark against TPU or NVIDIA hardware.

AWS also describes Trn2 UltraServers that join 64 chips, with up to 83.2 FP8 petaflops and 6 TB of HBM. The same product material labels UltraServers as preview, while also using language that describes them as available for demanding workloads. Treat the status as time-sensitive: verify regional availability, preview conditions, quota and purchasing terms before making an architecture dependent on that configuration.

Neuron software path

AWS Neuron supplies the compiler, runtime, training and inference libraries, plus profiling and debugging tools. AWS documents integrations for PyTorch and JAX. Framework support at the platform level does not mean that every model, operator, custom kernel, precision mode or serving library will work without changes.

For a migration test, install the Neuron version associated with the target Trn2 image, run the unmodified model, and record unsupported operators, graph breaks, recompilations, host fallbacks and numerical differences. Then test the production deployment path, not just a training script: tokenizer and preprocessing services, batching, checkpointing, autoscaling, observability and failure recovery can expose compatibility work that a short notebook run misses.

AWS price-performance claim

AWS says Trn2 provides 30–40% better price performance than GPU-based EC2 P5e and P5en instances. This is an AWS vendor claim, not an independent cross-cloud result. The cited page does not establish that every model, region, precision, utilization pattern or operating schedule receives that improvement. Use it as a reason to run a Trn2 pilot, not as a guaranteed saving in a business case.

NVIDIA GPU instances: what the available evidence supports

AWS’s accelerated-computing instance specifications list EC2 families containing NVIDIA H100 and B200 GPUs, along with configurations and accelerator memory. That makes an AWS-hosted NVIDIA instance a valid candidate to benchmark alongside TPU and Trainium.

The listing does not establish the best workload for each GPU generation, current capacity in your region, a complete CUDA or library-stack comparison, or a like-for-like price/performance result. Do not generalize AWS’s instance entries to every NVIDIA cloud or on-premises system. For a fair test, name the exact EC2 instance, GPU count, memory, interconnect, AMI or container image, driver and framework versions, and billing region.

GPU familiarity can still be an important operational factor. If your team already depends on a particular GPU image, kernel library or deployment framework, measure the cost of preserving that path against the engineering work required to port to TPU or Neuron. Conversely, do not assume that a familiar GPU implementation is automatically fastest: profile input pipelines, communication and serving overhead on the chosen instance.

Will a PyTorch or JAX model run?

“Supports PyTorch” or “supports JAX” identifies an entry point, not universal portability. The same model can take different compiler paths depending on accelerator generation and library release. Check all of the following on the exact software image:

  • Every operation in the forward and backward graphs, including custom extensions and sparse or fused kernels.
  • Autograd behavior, dynamic shapes, control flow, masking, variable-length batches and sequence-parallel code.
  • Precision support and numerical tolerances, especially when moving to FP8 or mixed precision.
  • Distributed collectives, sharding annotations, all-reduce performance and failure handling.
  • Data-loader workers, host preprocessing, tokenization, image decoding and augmentation.
  • Serving components such as continuous batching, paged attention, speculative decoding and model quantization.

Build a small compatibility matrix for the model. Mark each component as native, supported with a documented change, requiring a custom implementation, or unsupported. A framework name in a product page is not evidence that your particular graph will compile or that it will achieve useful utilization.

Memory, interconnect and scaling decisions

Single-device and single-instance fit

Calculate peak resident memory, not just parameter count. Include parameters, gradients, optimizer states, activations, temporary compiler buffers, communication buffers and a safety margin. For inference, include the key-value cache at the maximum context and concurrency you will serve. If the workload does not fit without aggressive sharding or offload, compare the engineering and latency cost of those techniques before comparing raw accelerator throughput.

Distributed training

At multiple devices, effective throughput depends on collective bandwidth and software scheduling. Record step time with data, tensor, pipeline or expert parallelism enabled; measure scaling efficiency from one device to the intended cluster size; and include checkpoint writes and evaluation intervals. A larger theoretical cluster can be slower if synchronization, storage or host networking dominates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Serving and latency

For inference, benchmark warm and cold starts separately. Report p50, p95 and p99 latency at the target concurrency, plus tokens per second, queue time, batching delay and memory utilization. An accelerator that wins an offline throughput test may fail a low-latency service objective if compilation, batching or host transfer adds tail latency.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

How to compare total cost fairly

Use a completed-work unit such as cost per million training tokens, cost per fine-tuned model, or cost per million served requests. A simple estimate is:

total run cost = accelerator time + host and orchestration time + storage + networking + idle and startup time + engineering cost

Keep assumptions identical across candidates:

Cost component What to record
Accelerator Exact product or instance, device count, billed unit, region, on-demand or reserved rate, and measured utilization
Hosts and orchestration VMs, Kubernetes or managed-service charges, control-plane costs, operating-system images and monitoring
Storage Dataset and checkpoint capacity, I/O requests, snapshots, replication and time retained
Networking Cross-zone traffic, inter-region traffic, internet egress and data-transfer charges
Capacity risk Queue time, reservation commitment, interruption rate, retries and idle time while waiting for a slice or instance
Engineering Porting, compiler debugging, kernel work, validation, deployment automation and on-call support

Do not put Google’s per-chip-hour number beside an AWS instance-hour number and call the lower figure cheaper. Normalize both to the same model output and include all non-accelerator costs. Likewise, treat AWS’s 30–40% Trn2 statement as a hypothesis to validate under your workload, not as a universal discount.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A representative benchmark procedure

  1. Freeze the workload. Record model commit, dataset sample, sequence or image dimensions, precision, batch size, optimizer, checkpoint interval and target quality metric.
  2. Prepare equivalent environments. Pin framework, compiler, runtime, container, driver and library versions as closely as each platform allows. Document unavoidable differences.
  3. Prove correctness first. Compare loss curves, evaluation scores, generated outputs and numerical tolerances on a fixed seed or fixed request set. A faster run that changes quality is not an equivalent result.
  4. Warm up compilation and caches. Separate one-time compile and image-pull time from steady-state measurements, but report both because autoscaling and short jobs pay them.
  5. Measure end to end. Capture throughput, p50/p95 latency, device utilization, host utilization, memory high-water mark, input-pipeline wait, communication time, retries and checkpoint duration.
  6. Scale to the intended size. Run the single-device or single-instance baseline, then the production topology. Record scaling efficiency and failure behavior at each step.
  7. Convert to cost per outcome. Apply the target region’s current prices, storage and network charges, measured runtime, idle time and engineering assumptions.
  8. Repeat enough to expose variance. Run multiple trials at representative times and capacity conditions; record queue delays and interruptions rather than silently excluding them.

Keep the benchmark harness and result logs with the model version. Hardware generations, software releases, prices and regional capacity change, so a decision should include the date and configuration that produced it.

Operational checks before committing

Google Cloud TPU checklist

  • Confirm TPU generation, runtime version and whether Compute Engine, GKE or another management path is required.
  • Verify quota, slice size, regional capacity and the selected Flex-start, Spot or reservation mode.
  • Test checkpoint restart and data availability under interruption or delayed capacity.
  • Measure host, storage and network costs in addition to chip-hours.

AWS Trainium checklist

  • Confirm Trn2 capacity, supported region, instance size and any UltraServer preview or access conditions.
  • Pin the Neuron SDK, compiler and runtime versions and test all model operators and serving libraries.
  • Measure compilation time, graph breaks, fallback execution and numerical parity.
  • Include EC2, storage, networking, orchestration and idle capacity in the cost model.

AWS-hosted NVIDIA GPU checklist

  • Name the exact H100 or B200 EC2 instance and verify accelerator count, memory, network topology and regional availability.
  • Record the AMI or container, driver, framework and kernel-library versions used in the test.
  • Measure the same end-to-end metrics and completed-work cost used for TPU and Trainium.
  • Do not treat one AWS GPU instance as representative of every NVIDIA cloud or system.

Which option fits common situations?

Choose TPU first when

Your model matches Google’s documented transformer, text-to-image or CNN use cases, your team can use the TPU-supported JAX or PyTorch/XLA path, and the required v6e memory and slice configuration are available in the target region. Validate compiler coverage and the current management API before committing.

Choose Trainium first when

You want an AWS-integrated path for generative-AI training or inference, your model passes a Neuron compatibility test, and Trn2 capacity and memory fit the intended topology. AWS’s price-performance claim can justify a pilot, but only measured cost per completed workload should determine the production choice.

Choose an NVIDIA GPU instance first when

Your tested model and deployment stack require a specific H100 or B200 configuration, or your operational constraints favor that exact EC2 environment. Verify the instance-level details and benchmark them directly; the available listing alone does not prove a performance or cost winner.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep more than one candidate when

Capacity risk, rapid model changes or uncertain compiler support outweigh the benefits of specialization. A second validated target can protect launches from quota shortages, interruptions or a software regression, but maintain both paths only if the measured resilience and business value exceed the extra engineering cost.

Decision worksheet

Question Evidence to collect Decision implication
Does the model compile and preserve quality? Operator matrix, compiler logs, numerical and task-level comparison Reject or budget porting work when unsupported operations affect the critical path
Does it fit memory? Peak HBM, host RAM, cache size, sharding and checkpoint footprint Select a larger slice or instance, change parallelism, or consider another platform
Does it scale? Step time, collective time, scaling efficiency and failure recovery Prefer the topology that meets throughput at the required cluster size
Does it meet serving SLOs? Warm/cold start, p50/p95/p99 latency, concurrency and queue time Reject configurations that meet only offline throughput targets
What is the completed-work cost? Measured runtime, current regional rates, storage, network, idle and engineering costs Compare cost per token, model or request rather than hourly sticker prices
Can the team operate it? Quota, capacity, deployment tooling, observability, upgrades and on-call skills Include operational risk and recovery effort in the final choice

Bottom line

Start with the model and service target, then test TPU v6e, Trn2 and the exact NVIDIA GPU instance that can meet them. Google supplies strong v6e guidance and per-chip specifications; AWS supplies Trainium2 and Neuron details plus a vendor price-performance claim; AWS EC2 documentation establishes H100 and B200 availability as another benchmark path. None of those facts replaces a controlled, end-to-end run in the region and configuration you will operate.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
