Google Cloud Released Veo 3 and Veo 3 Fast on Vertex AI: What Changed Since Launch

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google made Veo 3 and Veo 3 Fast generally available on Vertex AI on July 29, 2025. Veo 3 targeted higher-quality generations, while Veo 3 Fast was designed for quicker creative iteration. That launch is now historical: Google deprecated the Veo 3.0 endpoints in March 2026 and recommended migrating to Veo 3.1 endpoints before June 30, 2026. Teams starting a new integration should check the current model documentation rather than build on the old IDs.

What Google announced in July 2025

The announcement opened both models to Vertex AI customers as generally available services, rather than limiting access to preview users. “Generally available” described their status on Vertex AI; it did not mean free access or access without a Google Cloud project, billing, permissions, and applicable quotas. The release concerned Vertex AI, not a single consumer interface: Gemini, Flow, and other Google products have their own access methods and terms.

Google positioned Veo 3 as its most advanced video-generation model and Veo 3 Fast as the option for speed and rapid iteration. Those are Google’s product characterizations, not an independent ranking. The distinction is useful in planning: use a faster model to explore concepts and prompts, then assess whether a quality-oriented generation better fits selected shots.

Google reported that more than 70 million Veo videos had been created since May 2025 and that enterprise customers had generated more than 6 million videos since the Vertex AI preview launch. These are company-reported figures, not independently audited measures of adoption.

What the launch-era models could generate

The documented Veo 3.0 and Veo 3.0 Fast endpoints accepted text prompts and generated short video clips with sound. The July 2025 general-availability documentation listed these capabilities:

  • Video and audio: Native sound generation, including synchronized speech, sound effects, and ambient audio. Generated sound is not a guarantee of production-ready dialogue, lip sync, or final sound design.
  • Formats: 16:9 landscape and 9:16 portrait video, with 720p and 1080p output documented for the 3.0 models.
  • Duration: 4-, 6-, or 8-second clips, with up to four videos returned per request.
  • Language and safety: English prompts were listed in the model documentation. Person-generation settings included adult-only generation or a setting that disallowed people or faces; safety filters could affect whether a request succeeded or what it returned.
  • Request rate: The 3.0 model page documented a maximum of 10 API requests per minute per project. Actual production capacity also depends on quota and workload planning.

These limits describe the 3.0 launch-era endpoints, not a promise that every setting or limit applies unchanged to Veo 3.1. Check the current model page for the version and configuration you intend to use.

Useful role Selected shots where visual quality is a priority Prompt tests, storyboards, concepts, and other exploratory candidates
Trade-off to assess Generation time and cost can matter when iterating Do not assume output quality matches the quality-oriented model

The table reflects Google’s documented 3.0 launch capabilities and positioning. It does not establish a current price or a universal quality difference for every prompt. Compare current model specifications and billing terms before choosing a production path.

Why the Vertex AI release mattered to teams

Vertex AI offered a managed cloud route for integrating video generation into applications and workflows, instead of relying only on a consumer-facing creative interface. A team could build around a Google Cloud project, API access, IAM permissions, Cloud Storage, quotas, and its existing operational processes. That integration can be valuable for a product or agency workflow, but it also brings cloud setup, access management, cost monitoring, and capacity planning.

Generated audio was another practical change: speech, effects, and ambience could be produced with the video rather than requiring every experiment to begin with a separate audio-generation step. For polished work, however, a sound editor may still need to replace, edit, or remix that output.

Fast’s role is less about being a presumed bargain and more about making broad exploration practical. Teams can produce and review more candidates during concept development, then spend additional generation and post-production effort on a smaller selection. Whether that saves money depends on the current model prices, the number of attempts, and how often the faster output is usable.

How the Vertex AI workflow worked

Prerequisites

Using Vertex AI required a Google Cloud account and project, billing, Vertex AI access, suitable IAM permissions, and quota for the workload. A Cloud Storage bucket is useful for handling generated files in an application or repeatable workflow. Google’s documentation notes that new Google Cloud customers may receive $300 in free credits, subject to applicable terms; this is not a guarantee that Veo use will be free or that credits will cover substantial production work.

Use Media Studio

  1. Sign in to Google Cloud and select or create a project with billing and the required Vertex AI access.
  2. Open Vertex AI → Media Studio, then choose Veo.
  3. Select an available model and configure the supported output count, duration, resolution, aspect ratio, safety settings, and output destination.
  4. Generate a clip and save the result to Cloud Storage or retrieve it using the supported output method.

Console labels and available controls can change. For current instructions, consult Google’s Vertex AI video-generation guide.

Build with the API

The documented REST pattern for the 3.0 models used a long-running prediction request. The launch-era model IDs were veo-3.0-generate-001 and veo-3.0-fast-generate-001; because those endpoints were later deprecated, do not treat them as current IDs for a new implementation. The general request flow was:

  1. Choose a supported model ID and region from the current documentation, then authenticate with Google Cloud credentials.
  2. Submit a predictLongRunning request with the prompt and supported parameters. The documented pattern placed the project, location, publisher, and model in a URL of this form: POST https://us-central1-aiplatform.googleapis.com/v1/projects/PROJECT_ID/locations/us-central1/publishers/google/models/MODEL_ID:predictLongRunning.
  3. Provide an output Cloud Storage URI and settings such as sample count, aspect ratio, resolution, and duration where the selected model supports them.
  4. Poll or otherwise retrieve the returned long-running operation, then fetch the completed output from its destination.
  5. For reproducibility and cost control, log the prompt, model version, settings, seed if used, latency, and any failure or safety-filter result.

The URL and workflow illustrate the documented 3.0 API pattern, not a tested copy-and-paste request for a current endpoint. Field names, accepted values, regions, authentication, and operation handling should be verified in Google’s current generation guide.

How to make an iteration workflow more manageable

  • Start small: Try one short, lower-resolution output before increasing duration, resolution, or sample count.
  • Describe the shot: Specify the subject and action, setting, camera movement, lighting, visual style, and intended audio. Clear constraints help make candidates easier to compare.
  • Change one variable at a time: When a result misses the brief, revise one element—such as camera movement or lighting—rather than rewriting everything at once.
  • Separate exploration from selection: Use the faster option for broad prompt exploration when appropriate; reserve more costly or time-consuming attempts for promising candidates.
  • Plan for editing: Treat 4-to-8-second outputs as shots or short clips. Longer sequences typically require editing, transitions, and checks for continuity across generations.
  • Track the full workflow: Record attempts as well as accepted outputs. The practical cost is driven partly by discarded generations, not just the final clip.

Generation expense can scale with clip duration, the applicable per-second price, the number of attempts, and the number of samples. Vertex AI’s pricing is model- and configuration-dependent; audio, resolution, and model version matter. Google’s pricing pages list billing details, but the available figures should not be collapsed into one universal “Veo 3 price.” Check the live Vertex AI generative AI pricing table and Gen AI SKU listings for the exact model and output type.

Launch limitations and production considerations

Short clips are not a complete film workflow

The 3.0 launch endpoints were documented for short generations, not feature-length sequences. Their general-availability model page did not list extending an existing Veo video, generating from first and last frames, or reference-image-to-video as supported GA workflows; image-to-video was described as preview. A production pipeline may therefore need separate editing, compositing, or generation steps to manage character, camera, product, and location continuity. Later Veo versions may have different capabilities, so check the documentation for the endpoint you plan to use.

Quotas are not render-time guarantees

Video generation uses a different workload profile from ordinary low-latency text inference. Google’s Provisioned Throughput guidance gives Veo-specific quota-enforcement windows: 2,000 seconds for allocations of 1–9 GSUs, with shorter windows for larger allocations. These are enforcement windows, not promises about how long a clip takes to render. Review the Veo Provisioned Throughput documentation and your project’s quota before planning volume.

Safety, quality, and rights need review

Safety filters or person-generation controls can block a request or produce a result that does not fit the brief; that is not necessarily an API malfunction. Generated speech and sound may also need editorial review. For client, branded, or commercial work, assess applicable usage terms and review likeness, copyright, and content risks for the actual project rather than assuming a generated result is automatically cleared for every use.

What changed after the launch

Google’s release notes say the Vertex AI endpoints veo-3.0-generate-001 and veo-3.0-fast-generate-001 were deprecated in March 2026. Google recommended migration to veo-3.1-generate-001 and veo-3.1-fast-generate-001 before June 30, 2026. The announcement date and launch-era capabilities remain relevant to understanding the release, but the 3.0 IDs are not a safe default for new work. Check the Vertex AI release notes and Veo 3.0 model documentation for version history and current migration guidance.

Which Google access route fits?

Vertex AI is most relevant when an organization wants video generation within Google Cloud’s project, IAM, storage, quota, and application environment. Developers seeking a simpler API should compare the Gemini API video guide and its separate pricing and quota terms; those are not interchangeable with Vertex AI billing or governance. Individual creators may prefer a product interface or consumer subscription, but access, credits, limits, and available Veo versions can vary by country and date. Google lists consumer AI plans at Google AI plans.

There is no universal cheapest route established by these differences. Compare the current Veo version, audio inclusion, output settings, generation limits, commercial terms, storage costs, and controls for the specific workflow. For Google Cloud users, Vertex AI’s value may be its integration and operational controls as much as model access.
