Google Chrome’s Help me write is an experimental writing assistant built into supported web text fields. It can draft a short response from a prompt or rewrite text you have already entered, then let you edit the result before inserting it. It is designed for tasks such as reviews, surveys, listings, RSVPs and formal inquiries—not for submitting forms on your behalf.
Availability depends on your country, age, language, account, device and Chrome settings. The feature also sends the text, page content and page URL to Google for context, so it should not be used with confidential information.

What Google Chrome AI writing actually is
Help me write places generative AI inside a compatible Chrome text field. Google introduced it in 2023 using Gemini models to help people start writing or refine something they had already written. Current Chrome help documentation describes short-form uses such as reviews and surveys, as well as rewriting existing text.
Using Gemini models, the new feature will help you start writing or refine something you’ve already written.

The assistant generates a suggestion; it does not post, send or submit anything automatically. You remain responsible for checking the wording, accuracy, tone and any claims before deciding what to do with the page.
How to use Help me write on desktop Chrome
- Sign in to Chrome with your Google Account.
- Open a website containing a text box, comment field, review form or similar short-form input.
- Right-click inside the field. To rewrite text, highlight the passage first.
- Choose Help me write from the context menu.
- Enter a prompt containing at least three words. State the purpose, audience and tone when those details matter.
- Choose a goal: Polish, Elaborate or Formalise.
- Select Create and read the proposed text in the preview.
- Choose Insert for a new draft or Replace when rewriting highlighted text.
Improve a draft before inserting it
You can edit the prompt, retry the generation, shorten the text, rephrase it or change its tone before accepting it. A useful prompt names the action and constraints, for example: Write a two-sentence restaurant review that is positive but mentions the long wait. For an existing paragraph, highlight only the part you want changed so the replacement does not unintentionally alter surrounding content.
What happens after insertion
Inserted text remains editable in the webpage. Read it for factual errors, invented details, inappropriate language and accidental changes in meaning. You choose whether to submit the form, modify the draft, delete it or close the page; Help me write never makes that final submission decision.
Eligibility by device
Desktop requirements
Google’s desktop requirements are specific rather than universal. You must be in the United States, be at least 18 years old, use English as Chrome’s language, be signed in to a Google Account and have Make searches and browsing better enabled. The documented desktop operating systems are Windows, macOS and Linux.

Chromebook requirements
Google’s Chromebook documentation says Help me write requires a Chromebook Plus, not every Chromebook model. It is described as experimental with limited availability. The Chromebook help pages also specify a 400-character page-text condition, so a page that does not meet that condition may not expose the tool even when the account and device otherwise qualify.
Supported countries listed by Google include Australia, Belgium, Canada, Czechia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, South Africa, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States. Listed languages include Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Norwegian Bokmål, Portuguese, Spanish and Swedish. Country and language availability can change as the experiment expands.
Why Help me write is missing from the context menu
A missing menu item usually indicates an eligibility or policy issue rather than a problem with the individual webpage. Check these causes in order:

- You are signed out: open Chrome settings and confirm that the intended Google Account is active.
- The required setting is off: enable Make searches and browsing better, then restart or reload Chrome.
- Your location, age or language does not qualify: desktop documentation limits the experiment to people in the United States who are 18 or older and using English Chrome.
- The device is not supported: Chromebook access requires Chromebook Plus; desktop access is documented for Windows, Mac and Linux.
- The field is unsuitable: try a normal editable text area rather than a password box, file-upload control or a page that blocks the browser context menu.
- An administrator disabled it: work, school and other managed profiles can apply policies that hide generative-AI features.
- Limited rollout: experimental features can be enabled gradually, so two otherwise similar accounts may not see the same option at the same time.
Privacy: what Chrome sends when you use it
Data used for the suggestion
Google states that when Help me write is used, your text, the content of the page and the page URL are sent to Google. That information provides context for the generated suggestion. A page URL can reveal the service you are using, while page content may include text outside the field you intended to rewrite.

When you use Help me write, your text, the content and URL of the page that you’re writing on will be sent to Google.
Feature improvement and human review
Google says the submitted information can be used to improve the feature, including generative-model research and machine-learning technologies. Google also describes a human review process for improving the feature. Treat every use as a transmission to Google’s service, not as an entirely local operation.
Information to leave out
Do not paste names, home addresses, identification numbers, account credentials, payment details, medical information, confidential business material or other sensitive data into a prompt or field you ask Help me write to process. Google says sensitive information that is entered will not be used for model training, but avoiding entry is the safer practice because the text and page context are still sent for the feature’s operation.

Accuracy and safe-use workflow
Generated language can sound confident while being wrong, offensive or unsuitable for the audience. Google warns that suggestions may be inaccurate or offensive and says Help me write is not a source of medical, legal or financial advice.

- Define the facts yourself: provide only details you know to be true and avoid asking the model to supply regulated advice.
- Check every claim: compare dates, prices, names, measurements and policy statements with the original source.
- Check the tone: a polished sentence can still sound rude, discriminatory or too informal for the recipient.
- Remove private details: inspect both the prompt and the generated result before inserting it.
- Keep control of submission: use Insert or Replace only after review, then submit the webpage manually if you choose.
Help me write compared with other Chrome AI features
Help me write, Gemini in Chrome and AI Mode in Chrome are related but serve different jobs. Choosing the right one depends on whether you need inline wording, conversation about an open page or broader research and creation tools.

Chrome tab and file context
Chrome’s tab-AI documentation describes questions about open tabs or files. Temporary screenshots, Lens selections and PDF captures remain available during the session. Titles and URLs of tabs added to a thread may be saved so the conversation can be revisited; the excerpted documentation does not state a universal retention period, so check the current Chrome privacy controls for your account.

Chrome Enterprise documentation lists Help me write for ChromeOS and Chrome on Windows, Mac and Linux. Administrators can set generative-AI defaults and control Google AI integrations. As a result, a work or school browser may hide or disable Help me write even when the same Google Account shows it in a personal Chrome profile.
If you administer Chrome, review the browser’s generative-AI and Google AI integration policies before troubleshooting individual users. If you are an employee or student, ask the administrator whether the feature is intentionally restricted; changing local settings may not override a managed policy.

Describe the experience and the one point you want emphasized: Write a concise survey response that says the setup was easy but the instructions lacked screenshots.
Listings and RSVPs
State the item or event, essential facts and desired length: Create a friendly 60-word listing for a used desk, noting its dimensions and pickup-only condition.
Formal inquiries
Give the recipient, purpose and requested action without adding confidential identifiers: Formalise this request for a billing explanation and ask for a reply within five business days.

What is not established about Chrome AI writing
Google has not published an authoritative adoption rate, accuracy percentage, time-saved measurement or quality-improvement statistic for Help me write. Claims that assign a precise success rate or productivity gain go beyond the available evidence. The feature remains experimental, its interface and eligibility can change, and availability is not guaranteed for every account that meets the listed requirements.
