Short answer: Both Google Chat and Slack let you put standard emoji in messages, attach emoji reactions, and create custom emoji. The decisive difference is governance. Google Chat custom emoji are restricted to work or school accounts, can be disabled by an administrator, and cannot be shared outside the organization. Slack makes custom emoji available on every plan; members can add them by default (guests cannot), unless a workspace or organization owner restricts the permission.
Slack also adds documented aliases and emoji packs, while Google Chat’s documented controls focus on organizational access and management. The comparison below separates message emoji from reactions, shows what each platform permits, and explains the practical setup and deletion consequences.

At a glance: which platform fits your emoji needs?
| Capability | Google Chat | Slack |
|---|---|---|
| Standard emoji in message text | Supported through the message composer | Supported through the message composer |
| Emoji reactions | Supported; the documented developer route uses the Chat API | Supported from a message’s Add reaction control on desktop and by pressing and holding a message on mobile |
| Who can use custom emoji | Work and school accounts only | All plans; guests are excluded from adding emoji by default |
| Administrator control | Administrators can disable custom emoji | Workspace or organization owners can restrict who may add emoji |
| Where custom emoji can be shared | Within the organization; Google says they cannot be shared externally | The retrieved Slack documentation does not state an equivalent external-sharing rule |
| Aliases | Not stated in the cited Google documentation | Supported |
| Emoji packs | Not stated in the cited Google documentation | Supported |
| Custom-emoji deletion | Emoji managers can delete emoji made by others; deletion replaces uses in messages or reactions for everyone in the organization | Members can delete emoji they added; owners and administrators have broader, plan-dependent deletion permissions |
Choose Google Chat when your organization wants custom emoji kept inside its managed account boundary and is comfortable with administrator-controlled access. Choose Slack when aliases, packs, broad plan availability, and a more openly documented custom-emoji workflow matter more than a clearly stated organization-only sharing rule.
Emoji in message text are different from reactions
Emoji inserted while writing
A message emoji is part of the text you compose. It appears wherever you place it in the sentence and remains part of that message’s content. Both products provide a built-in emoji picker, so a user can select a standard Unicode emoji instead of typing a character manually. Custom emoji, when enabled, appear as additional choices in the picker.

Because message emoji are content, they can be used in a sentence, a short status, a naming convention, or a visual marker that has meaning only in your team. A custom image inserted this way does not count as a reaction simply because it looks like one.
Reactions attached to a message
A reaction is attached to an existing message rather than inserted into its text. It usually communicates acknowledgement, agreement, celebration, or a quick response without adding another message to the conversation. The same emoji can therefore have two different jobs: typed into a message or attached as a reaction.
Slack explicitly documents both composing with emoji and reacting to messages. Google’s available developer documentation separately establishes reaction creation through the Chat API. That distinction matters if you are documenting a workflow for users versus building an integration: an API capability does not, by itself, prove that every account sees the same end-user button or menu.
Account eligibility and permission rules
Google Chat: work or school accounts only
Google Chat Help states that custom emoji are available only for work and school accounts. A personal account should not be assumed to qualify. Even an eligible account may not show the feature because an administrator can disable custom emoji for the organization.

Google also sets a hard sharing boundary: custom emoji cannot be shared with people outside the organization. That is important for companies that collaborate with vendors, customers, or external guests. A custom emoji created in one organization is not a portable asset that you can rely on in an outside conversation.
Slack: available on all plans, with member-level controls
Slack’s Help Center marks custom emoji as available on all plans. Members can add custom emoji by default, but guests cannot add them under the default permission model. Workspace or organization owners can restrict the ability to add emoji, so the default is not a guarantee that every member will see the same controls.
The permission model affects creation, not merely display. A user may be able to use existing custom emoji while being blocked from uploading new ones. If the Add Emoji control is missing, check whether you are a guest and whether an owner has changed the workspace setting before treating the absence as a technical fault.

Check access before trying to create one
- Sign in with the work or school account that belongs to the organization where the emoji will be used.
- Confirm with your Google Workspace administrator that custom emoji are enabled. If the administrator has disabled the feature, no user-side setting can restore the creation control.
- Open the emoji picker in Chat and look for the custom-emoji creation or management control. Google can change labels and placement as the interface evolves, so use the control presented in your account rather than relying on an older screenshot.
- Create the emoji through the available picker workflow, then select it from the custom-emoji section when composing a message or adding a supported reaction.
The documented account and sharing rules are more definitive than any particular screen layout. If you qualify but cannot find a creation control, the likely causes are administrator policy, an account signed into the wrong organization, or an interface rollout difference.

Using and sharing a Google Chat custom emoji
After creation, the emoji is intended for people in the same organization. Do not treat it as a universal image asset: Google explicitly says it cannot be shared with people outside that organization. External participants may see a substitute or replacement rather than the original custom artwork, depending on the conversation context and product behavior.
Deletion and its effect on existing conversations
Google’s rules make deletion an organization-wide action. An emoji manager can delete custom emoji created by other people, not only emoji they personally uploaded. When a custom emoji is deleted, Google says it is removed for everyone in the organization and replaced wherever it had appeared in messages or reactions. Before deleting a widely used symbol, consider whether old messages, operating instructions, or team conventions depend on its visual meaning.
How custom emoji work in Slack
Adding a custom emoji
- Open the workspace emoji picker and choose the control for adding a custom emoji or alias.
- Upload the image, provide the emoji name, and save it if your member role has permission.
- Open the picker again to confirm that the new name appears in the custom section, then use it in message text or wherever reactions are available.
The exact button label can vary with Slack’s interface and workspace settings. Guests and members affected by an owner restriction may not have the add control. Existing emoji can remain usable even when uploading is limited.

Aliases and emoji packs
Slack documents two customization features beyond uploading a single image. An alias gives an alternate name to an existing emoji, which helps teams preserve familiar typing habits or map a local term to a standard symbol. Emoji packs group related custom emoji so a workspace can add a coherent set instead of maintaining isolated images. Neither aliases nor packs are established by the cited Google Chat documentation, so do not assume a matching feature exists there.
Deleting Slack custom emoji
Slack members can delete emoji they added. Owners and administrators have broader deletion powers under Slack’s plan-specific rules, allowing governance beyond the original uploader. Because the exact owner and administrator controls depend on the workspace’s plan and settings, check the current permission panel before promising that a particular role can remove another person’s emoji.

Slack desktop and mobile
On desktop, Slack’s documented workflow starts from the message’s Add reaction control. Select an emoji to attach it. Selecting the same reaction again removes it, which makes reaction cleanup a one-step toggle rather than a separate management screen.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →On mobile, press and hold the message to open the reaction options, then choose the emoji. Slack also documents one-click suggested reactions, which can speed up common acknowledgements when the suggested choices match the team’s intent.
Best Value
Google Chat and the Chat API
Google’s developer guide documents creating a reaction with the Google Chat API and specifying the emoji’s Unicode representation. That is useful for bots, workflow tools, and integrations that need to react programmatically. It does not establish a complete click-by-click end-user interface for every Google Chat edition, so avoid promising a particular reaction button sequence unless you have verified it in the account and interface you support.
For an integration, treat the Unicode value as part of the request data and test the resulting reaction in the target space. If your automation uses a custom emoji, verify that the emoji is available within the organization and that the account executing the request has the required access; the organization-only sharing rule still applies.
Sharing, portability, and external collaboration
| Question | Google Chat | Slack |
|---|---|---|
| Can an organization keep custom emoji internal? | Yes. Google explicitly limits custom-emoji sharing to the organization. | The cited Slack help does not establish an equivalent external-sharing statement. |
| Can an external guest create one? | Eligibility is limited to work and school accounts; organization policy still applies. | Guests cannot add custom emoji by default. |
| Can the same custom emoji be assumed to work in another company’s workspace? | No. The documented organization boundary prevents that assumption. | Do not assume portability between workspaces; Slack’s cited material describes workspace management but does not promise cross-workspace sharing. |
If your team works across company boundaries, use standard Unicode emoji for meanings that everyone must see consistently. Reserve custom emoji for internal shorthand, branded reactions, project states, or jokes whose value depends on a shared workspace vocabulary.
Choosing between Google Chat and Slack
Choose Google Chat when governance is the priority
- Your users already have managed work or school accounts.
- An administrator needs the ability to disable custom emoji centrally.
- Custom symbols should remain inside one organization.
- You are building an integration and can work with the documented Chat API reaction model.
Choose Slack when customization depth is the priority
- You want custom emoji on any Slack plan.
- Members should be able to add emoji by default, with owner-level restriction available when needed.
- Aliases will help teams preserve naming conventions.
- Emoji packs are useful for distributing coordinated sets.
- You need documented desktop, mobile, and suggested-reaction workflows.
Use a neutral policy when both platforms are in play
Multiplatform organizations should define a small set of standard Unicode emoji for cross-company communication and document custom symbols separately for each platform. Record each custom emoji’s name, meaning, owner, and replacement plan. This avoids a situation where a Google Chat symbol is assumed to be visible outside the organization or a Slack alias is mistaken for a portable Unicode character.
Troubleshooting missing emoji controls
Google Chat
- No custom-emoji option: verify that the signed-in account is a work or school account and ask the administrator whether the feature is disabled.
- External participant cannot use the symbol: this is consistent with Google’s organization-only sharing rule, not necessarily a failed upload.
- A deleted symbol appears differently in old messages: Google documents replacement after deletion for messages and reactions; the original custom artwork should not be expected to remain.
- Automation cannot add a reaction: check that the integration is using the Chat API reaction method and the emoji’s Unicode representation, then confirm the executing account’s access to the space.
Slack
- Add Emoji is missing: check whether the account is a guest and whether a workspace or organization owner restricted member permissions.
- Upload fails or looks poor: use a square JPG, PNG, or GIF under 128 KB with a transparent background where appropriate; animated GIFs should stay within Slack’s documented 50-frame limit.
- Another member’s emoji cannot be deleted: member deletion is limited to emoji the member added; owner or administrator permissions may be required, subject to plan-specific rules.
- A reaction will not disappear: select the same reaction again on desktop, or press and hold the message on mobile and remove it from the reaction controls.
Administrator checklist
- Decide whether custom emoji are an internal vocabulary or a general-purpose communication feature.
- For Google Chat, communicate the work-or-school account requirement and the organization-only sharing boundary before users upload artwork.
- For Slack, decide whether members may add emoji, remembering that guests are excluded by default and owners can restrict the permission.
- Define who may remove symbols and what happens to messages that used a deleted emoji.
- Publish naming guidance so aliases do not create near-duplicates or ambiguous meanings.
- For cross-platform teams, document Unicode alternatives for any custom symbol that external collaborators must understand.
Interfaces and permission labels can change, so administrators should verify the current controls in their edition before publishing internal instructions. The underlying distinction remains practical: Google Chat emphasizes account and organization boundaries, while Slack exposes broader plan availability and additional customization features.
