What happened to my Google Business Profile website?
The affected product was Google’s simple website builder inside Business Profiles. Google’s shutdown notice said those sites would be turned off in March 2024 and that visitors would be redirected to the associated Business Profile until June 10, 2024. That redirect window has ended, so an old site address should not be treated as a working website in 2026.
The notice is reproduced in a Google support community discussion rather than on the official announcement page itself. It states: “In March 2024, websites made with Google Business Profiles will be turned off and customers visiting your site will be redirected to your Business Profile instead.”
Is every Google-branded or Google-hosted site affected?
No. The shutdown concerned sites created with the Business Profile website builder. A separately created site on its own domain is a different case. Seeing “Google” in a product name, or having a site that appears in a Business Profile, is not enough to identify how it was built.

Check the old address, the Google account or service used to create it, and where its content was hosted. If you cannot establish that history, treat the site as unverified and create a replacement rather than assuming the old address will return.
What businesses should do in 2026
1. Confirm the old site’s origin
- Find the former website address in old emails, invoices, browser bookmarks, advertising, or printed material.
- Identify the account and product used to create it.
- Separate a Business Profile-built site from a site made independently and merely linked from the profile.
2. Choose whether you need a standalone website
A profile may be sufficient for a business that only needs hours, location, photos, reviews, and basic contact information. A standalone site is more useful when customers need detailed services, policies, accessibility information, multiple locations, lead forms, appointment flows, reservations, or online sales.
3. Create or restore the replacement site
Google’s shutdown notice listed Wix, Squarespace, GoDaddy, Google Sites, Shopify, Durable, Weebly, Strikingly, and WordPress as examples of separate website services. The list is not a ranking or endorsement. Select a service based on the content and transactions you need, who controls the domain, whether content can be exported, the setup effort, maintenance responsibility, and recurring fees.
4. Add the new address to the Business Profile
Google’s current Business Profile instructions require the full URL, including http:// or https://.
- Sign in to the Google Account linked to the business.
- Open the Business Profile in Google Search or Google Maps.
- Select Edit profile.
- Enter the complete website address in the website field.
- Save the change and open the link as a customer to confirm it reaches the intended page.
The profile must be verified before it can be edited, and some businesses may be asked to complete verification first.
5. Make sure Google can access the replacement
Do not block Googlebot from crawling the replacement site. Google’s help guidance also points site owners to Search Console when checking for possible site penalties. These checks do not restore the discontinued builder; they help ensure that the new destination can be discovered and reviewed.

6. Test the customer journey
- Open the site on a phone and a desktop browser.
- Confirm the business name, address, phone number, hours, and service details are current.
- Test contact forms, booking steps, payment or ordering flows, and confirmation messages.
- Replace old links in social profiles, directories, ads, email signatures, QR codes, and printed materials.
Can a Business Profile link directly to bookings or orders?
Yes, where the feature and business eligibility apply. Google documents direct links for menus and service lists, plus transaction links for appointments, reservations, food orders, and shopping orders.

When multiple links are available, Google lets the business choose a preferred link. Some provider links may be supplied automatically by third parties. Availability and eligibility vary, so a direct action link is not a substitute for a full website when customers need broader information.

How to choose a replacement website service
Compare services against the business’s requirements rather than assuming a familiar brand is the best fit.

The shutdown notice names possible builders but does not establish their current prices, feature sets, ownership terms, or affiliate availability. Verify those details in each provider’s current terms before committing.

Will my business.site domain still work?
Do not rely on it. Business Profile-built sites were scheduled for shutdown in March 2024, and the stated redirect period ended June 10, 2024. Check where the site was actually created; an independently built site on a separately controlled domain is not automatically the same product.
How do I add my new website to my Google Business Profile?
Open the verified profile in Google Search or Maps, choose Edit profile, enter the complete address with http:// or https://, and save. Then test the link from the public profile.

You can continue using the Business Profile for discovery information and eligible action links. The discontinued builder itself is not a standalone-site option, so businesses that need pages beyond the profile must use a separate website service.
What the shutdown means for visibility
Replacing the discontinued site is an operational requirement, not a guaranteed ranking change. Google does not state that choosing one of the named builders improves ranking. Keep the profile and replacement site accurate, make the destination usable on mobile, and ensure Googlebot is not blocked. Those steps help customers reach the right information but do not promise placement or conversions.
