Google Business Profile Ads vs. Local Search Ads: Which Should You Use?

Short answer: there is no separate Google Ads campaign type officially called “Google Business Profile ads.” The phrase usually means ads that use a linked Business Profile or its location data. Local search ads are ad placements that can show a business location on Google Search and Maps when location assets are enabled. Choose the campaign setup by the action you need—calls, directions, website leads or store visits—and by how much control you want over targeting, bidding and reporting.

For a simple Search-and-Maps presence, use a Smart campaign with a linked Business Profile. For more keyword and bidding control, use a Search campaign with location assets. For a physical-store objective and broader automated delivery, consider Performance Max for store goals. Compare qualified results in your own account; Google’s documentation does not establish a universal performance winner or a cross-business CPC benchmark.

What “Google Business Profile ads” actually means

A Business Profile is your listing and location-information source, not a standalone advertising campaign. Google Ads can use the profile’s address, phone number, hours and other location data after you link it to the advertising account. Google specifically makes a linked profile a prerequisite for a Smart campaign, while location assets can pull business details into eligible ads. See Google’s overview of local ads and its documentation on assets.

When someone searches for a nearby business—Google’s example is “coffee near me”—an ad can include the business location, a call option, directions or a link to a business-details page. People often call those “Business Profile ads” because the listing supplies the information, but the ad is delivered by a Google Ads campaign and its associated assets.

Business Profile versus location assets

  • Business Profile: the listing that stores the public business information and can be linked to Google Ads.
  • Location assets: Google Ads assets that attach a business location and details such as a call button or a link to a business-details page.
  • Local search ad: an ad placement featuring a business location in nearby Search or Maps results.
  • Campaign: the advertising setup—such as Smart, Search or Performance Max—that decides targeting, bidding, budgets and delivery.

Keeping these terms separate prevents a common setup mistake: looking for a “Business Profile ads” campaign selector that does not exist in the current Google Ads help documentation.

What local search ads are

Local search ads are location-focused placements that may appear on Google Search and Google Maps when a person searches for nearby businesses. They depend on location assets and the campaign’s eligibility, targeting and budget. Google says local search ads can feature your locations when people search on Google.com or Google Maps; the format is described in Target customers near an address with location assets.

The same location can be represented in several ways. A search result may show the address and a route option; a mobile user may see a call button; a Maps result may show a promoted pin or a map-search ad. The exact appearance depends on the query, device, location, campaign type and available assets.

Where local search ads can appear

Google documents local ad placements across Search, Maps and, where eligible, other Google properties. For Maps specifically, Google describes promoted pins and map search ads. Promoted pins require a linked Business Profile. Map search ads require location assets and can be served through multiple campaign types. The requirements and formats are outlined in How to advertise in Google Maps.

Side-by-side: the choices you are really making

Option Primary purpose Control and setup Potential surfaces Useful when
Linked Business Profile Supply accurate business and location information to Google Ads Not a campaign; it is a data source that can be linked to the account Can support location assets, Smart campaigns and Maps formats Your address, phone, hours and listing details need to appear correctly in ads
Local search ads with location assets Show a location to nearby searchers and offer calls, directions or website visits Uses the controls of the underlying eligible campaign plus the location asset Google Search and Google Maps You want local actions while retaining the campaign controls available in Search or another campaign type
Smart campaign Automated advertising for a selected goal, keyword themes, locations and budget Requires Smart mode and a linked Business Profile; Google automates much of the management Search and Maps You need a simpler setup and do not want to manage a full keyword and bidding structure
Performance Max for store goals Optimize toward store visits, store sales and other local actions You provide locations, budget and ad assets; Google automates bids, placements and asset combinations Google properties and networks eligible for the campaign Physical-store outcomes matter more than controlling individual search placements

The table describes different layers rather than mutually exclusive products. A Business Profile can feed a Smart campaign; location assets can support a Search campaign; and a Maps placement can be produced by more than one campaign type.

Choose by the customer action you need

If the priority is phone calls

Use a setup that exposes a call option and measure calls as a local conversion action where available. Location assets can add a call button, and Google lists mobile click-to-call among the interactions associated with local search ads. Make sure the phone number in the linked profile is current before spending, because an incorrect number turns a high-intent ad into a dead end.

If the priority is directions

Use location assets or an eligible Smart or store-focused campaign that can report direction actions. Google lists direction requests among the local interactions that can be charged on a cost-per-click basis. Check the location report after launch to confirm that the areas producing direction requests are actually serviceable and profitable.

If the priority is website leads or online bookings

A Search campaign with location assets is usually the more controllable route when the query, keyword theme, landing page and bid strategy all matter. The location asset can provide local context while the campaign remains focused on website conversions. A Smart campaign can work when you prefer a shorter setup, but it gives you fewer manual controls over keyword management.

If the priority is visits to a physical store

Evaluate Performance Max for store goals when the account can supply the required locations, budget and creative assets. Google says this campaign type optimizes bids, placements and combinations of assets toward store visits, store sales and local actions. It is designed for the outcome rather than for choosing a particular search result or manually controlling every placement; details are in About Performance Max for store goals.

How to set up the main routes

Route 1: Smart campaign with a linked Business Profile

  1. Use Google Ads in Smart mode; Smart campaigns are not the same setup as a fully managed Search campaign.
  2. Link the relevant Business Profile. Google identifies that link as a prerequisite for creating a Smart campaign.
  3. Choose the business goal, then define the keyword themes, locations and budget requested during setup. Google describes these as core Smart campaign inputs in Create a Smart Search campaign.
  4. Review the ad text, phone number, address, hours and destination before publishing. The profile supplies location information, so errors there can carry into the local experience.
  5. After launch, inspect the location and action reporting rather than judging performance from impressions alone. Smart campaigns can appear on Search and Maps, but delivery and local-action availability depend on eligibility and settings.

Smart mode is appropriate when speed and automation outweigh granular control. It is less suitable when you need a tightly controlled keyword list, detailed search-term exclusions or a placement-specific bidding plan.

Route 2: Search campaign with location assets

  1. Use an eligible Search campaign and connect the correct Business Profile or business location source.
  2. Add location assets in the account so Google can attach the address, call option and business-details link to eligible ads.
  3. Keep the Search campaign’s keyword, match-type, negative-keyword, bidding and landing-page controls aligned with the local objective.
  4. Set the geographic targets and review the location report after traffic accumulates. Exclude areas that generate irrelevant clicks or cannot be served.
  5. Compare calls, direction requests, location-detail interactions and website conversions with spend for the same period and geography.

This route treats local information as an asset inside a campaign you manage. It is the better fit when the business has enough search volume and expertise to make use of those controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Route 3: Performance Max for store goals

  1. Confirm that the account has usable business locations and accurate profile information.
  2. Choose the store-oriented goal and provide the locations, budget and ad assets Google requests.
  3. Supply varied, accurate creative assets that explain the offer and the store experience; Google combines them and chooses eligible placements.
  4. Allow the system to optimize toward store visits, store sales and local actions, then evaluate those outcomes rather than trying to force a particular Search or Maps position.
  5. Use geographic and asset reporting to identify stores or areas that need correction, exclusions or a different budget allocation.

Performance Max for store goals trades manual placement control for automated reach and optimization across Google properties and networks. It should not be described as a “local search ad campaign” even though it can contribute to local outcomes.

Route 4: Maps-specific visibility

If your question is specifically “How do I show up in Google Maps?”, first make the Business Profile and location assets accurate. Google documents promoted pins as requiring a linked Business Profile, while map search ads require location assets and may be served through several campaign types. That means Maps visibility is a placement outcome, not a single campaign switch. Review Google’s Maps advertising guidance for current eligibility and format details.

What you pay for and what gets reported

Google’s location-asset documentation lists standard cost-per-click interactions for local search ads, including:

  • [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
  • Clicks to view location details

Those are billing examples documented by Google, not a promise that every account will see the same price or that every interaction will be available in every campaign. Actual cost depends on the auction, targeting, competition, device, query and campaign eligibility. The documentation does not provide a reliable cross-business CPC benchmark.

Smart campaigns also report actions taken after ad exposure or a click, such as profile-related interactions. Google explains these reports in Location actions for Smart campaigns. Use the action definitions shown in your account when deciding whether a click, call or direction request counts as a qualified result for your business.

Geographic targeting is useful, not perfectly precise

Do not assume that a location setting creates a hard geographic fence. Google says Smart campaign location targeting can reach people physically in, regularly in or showing interest in the selected areas. Its systems use signals such as users’ settings, devices and behavior, and Google describes this as a best effort rather than a guarantee of 100% accuracy. The qualification appears in Location settings in Smart campaigns.

A practical monitoring routine

  1. Choose the areas the business can realistically serve before publishing.
  2. After traffic arrives, open geographic reporting and look for clicks, calls and directions from outside the intended service area.
  3. Exclude locations that repeatedly produce irrelevant or unserviceable traffic.
  4. Check whether a broad area is hiding very different performance by town, postcode or radius segment.
  5. Repeat the review after major changes to budget, creative, opening hours or service coverage.

Location reports are especially important for businesses with delivery boundaries, appointment-only service areas or stores near administrative borders.

Keep the profile and assets trustworthy

Google draws location information for location assets from Business Profile and Maps data. Before launch, verify:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Street address and map pin
  • Primary phone number
  • Opening hours and holiday hours
  • Business name and category
  • Website or booking destination
  • Which locations are active, closed or temporarily unavailable

An ad can be technically eligible and still lose value if it sends someone to a closed store, a disconnected phone line or an address outside the advertised service area. Updating the source information is often more important than changing the ad headline.

How to compare results without fooling yourself

Google’s official pages explain campaign mechanics, placements and billing interactions; they do not establish that Smart campaigns, local search ads or Performance Max always perform best. Make the comparison inside the same account instead.

  1. Define one primary outcome. Decide whether a qualified call, direction request, website lead or store visit is the result that matters.
  2. Hold geography constant. Compare the same towns, radius or service areas, and document any exclusions.
  3. Use comparable time windows. Avoid comparing a holiday week with a normal week or a launch period with a mature campaign.
  4. Track quality, not just volume. A cheap click from outside the service area is not a successful local lead.
  5. Record spend and action cost. Review cost per qualified call, direction request, lead or store outcome using the definitions available in the account.
  6. Change one major variable at a time. Switching campaign type, geography, budget and offer together makes the result impossible to attribute.

This approach produces an account-specific answer. It is a practical testing recommendation, not a published head-to-head performance result.

Decision guide by business situation

One location, limited advertising experience

Start with a Smart campaign if you are comfortable with automated management and have a linked, accurate Business Profile. Define the goal, keyword themes, locations and budget, then inspect local actions and geographic reports regularly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Several locations with different priorities

Use location assets and a campaign structure that lets you distinguish stores, service areas or budgets where that separation matters. A single automated setup may be convenient, but separate reporting can be more useful when one location has different hours, margins or demand.

Experienced search marketer needing query control

Use a Search campaign with location assets. This keeps local information in the ad while preserving the keyword, negative-keyword, landing-page and bidding controls that a managed search program requires.

Retailer focused on store visits or store sales

Assess Performance Max for store goals. It is built around physical-store outcomes and automated delivery, so the trade-off is less manual placement control in exchange for Google-managed bids, placements and asset combinations.

Business whose customers mainly find it in Maps

Ensure the linked profile and location assets meet Google’s requirements, then use an eligible campaign that can serve Maps formats. Watch direction and call actions, and keep hours and address data current.

Common mistakes and fixes

Mistake: searching for a “Business Profile ads” campaign type

Fix: Select the campaign type that matches the goal—Smart, Search with location assets or Performance Max for store goals—and treat the Business Profile as the linked location-information source.

Mistake: assuming every local ad is a Maps ad

Fix: Check the placement and campaign reporting. Local search ads can appear on Search and Maps, while Maps-specific formats have their own profile and asset requirements.

Mistake: judging success by impressions

Fix: Measure calls, directions, location-detail interactions, website leads or store outcomes that correspond to the business goal.

Mistake: trusting the target radius without checking geography

Fix: Review geographic reports and exclude irrelevant areas. Google explicitly qualifies location targeting as a best-effort system rather than perfectly precise delivery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mistake: leaving old business information in the profile

Fix: Correct address, phone, hours and website details before scaling. Location assets use that information, so an outdated listing can damage every local placement.

Mistake: comparing unlike campaigns

Fix: Use the same area, period and conversion definition, and compare the cost of qualified outcomes rather than raw clicks.

Bottom-line recommendation

Do not choose between “Google Business Profile ads” and local search ads as though they were two rival campaign types. Link and maintain the Business Profile, add location assets where appropriate, then choose the campaign layer that fits the business: Smart for simpler automated Search-and-Maps setup, Search with location assets for greater control, or Performance Max for store goals when physical-store outcomes and automated delivery are the priority. Use your own geographic and conversion reports to decide what to scale.
