A WhatsApp button appeared briefly in Google Local Results in one reporter’s test, then disappeared by the next day. That October 2026 observation does not confirm a broad launch, and the reporter could not verify what happened when the button was clicked. Google does separately offer WhatsApp chat on some verified Business Profiles in select regions; that established feature should not be mistaken for proof that the new button is the same thing.
What was seen in Google Local Results
On October 5, 2026, Search Engine Watch reporter Sachin Patel reported seeing a WhatsApp button in Google Local Results. He said it was no longer visible when he checked again a day later. Patel tested in Incognito mode but could not confirm the button’s behavior. He wrote: “I was testing this in Incognito mode, so I wasn’t able to fully verify the behavior, but I’m assuming clicking the button would let users start a chat with that particular business directly on WhatsApp.” Direct messaging was his assumption, not a verified result. Search Engine Watch’s report does not identify the market, device, search query, listing, or account conditions, so the observation cannot establish where or how widely the button appeared.

How the reported button differs from Google’s documented chat option
Google’s current Business Profile help documents a separate setting: claimed and verified businesses in select regions can add WhatsApp or text messaging to their contact information. Setup is through Edit profile > Contact > Chat, where an owner selects WhatsApp and enters a click-to-chat URL. Google says that if both WhatsApp and text messaging are configured, customers will see only the text-message option. See Google’s Business Profile chat guidance.

WhatsApp’s help page describes the general flow: a business adds a WhatsApp Business phone number to its Google Business Profile, and customers can use a click-to-chat button to start a conversation in WhatsApp. That explains the documented profile-chat mechanism; it does not verify the behavior of the button Patel saw. What business owners should check
A June 2026 report by Search Engine Roundtable described individual cases in which WhatsApp numbers appeared on some Business Profiles without the owners’ intention. Some reported numbers were landlines that could not receive WhatsApp messages; the outlet later reported users saying they could delete the numbers. This is secondary reporting of specific cases, not evidence that all profiles were affected. Read the report.
- Open the relevant Business Profile and go to Edit profile > Contact > Chat.
- Check whether WhatsApp or text messaging is listed and confirm that the number or click-to-chat destination belongs to the business and works as intended.
- If the WhatsApp contact is unwanted or incorrect, edit or remove it in the profile settings, then check the customer-facing listing.
- If you want customers to use WhatsApp, follow Google’s regional eligibility and setup guidance. Remember that Google says text is the option shown when both text and WhatsApp are configured.
What is and is not known about availability
A February 2025 Google Business Profile Community discussion described uneven availability across mobile Search and other Search or Maps surfaces. That is historical community guidance and does not establish the scope of the October 2026 observation or current eligibility. Google’s current help page is the stronger source for the documented feature’s select-region limitation. Whether the reported Local Results button is that feature, a separate experiment, or a wider test remains unconfirmed.
