Google Assistant is being replaced by Gemini on eligible Android mobile devices, with Google’s current notice saying the mobile discontinuation begins September 3, 2026. That is not a single switch for every Google product: phones and paired mobile devices follow one transition, while Nest and Google Home speakers and displays have a separate, invitation-based Gemini for Home rollout. Cars with Google built-in and Home speakers and displays are not part of the September 3 mobile change.
When is Google Assistant being replaced by Gemini?
Google’s current Assistant support notice says discontinuation on mobile devices starts September 3, 2026. That supersedes Google’s March 2025 announcement, which had said the Assistant experience would stop being accessible on most mobile devices later that year. The older end-of-2025 target is no longer the current timeline. Google’s current mobile transition notice and its March 2025 announcement describe the change and its earlier schedule.

The change is about the assistant software, not a requirement to buy a new phone. Eligibility depends on the device meeting Google’s requirements, and timing may vary as the transition rolls out. Google’s current notice does not promise that classic Assistant will remain available after the stated start date.

Which devices are affected—and which are separate?
| Device category | What Google says |
|---|---|
| Eligible Android phones and tablets | Gemini becomes the primary assistant when the user switches. Google says mobile discontinuation starts September 3, 2026. |
| Paired mobile devices, such as watches, headphones, and earbuds with Assistant built in | Google says Gemini replaces Assistant on paired mobile devices. The experience depends on the paired device and its compatibility. |
| Cars with Google built-in | Google says these continue beyond the September 3, 2026 mobile change. |
| Google Home and Nest speakers and displays | Not affected by the mobile discontinuation date. These devices have a distinct Gemini for Home rollout. |
| Other non-mobile devices, including TVs and locked Pixel Tablets | Google’s Gemini help distinguishes these from the mobile transition; do not assume the phone timeline applies to them. |
These distinctions are documented in Google’s mobile transition notice and Gemini’s Android help page. Google announced plans in May 2025 for Gemini on watches, cars, TV, and XR, but that announcement is historical rather than confirmation that every feature is available now. Google’s May 2025 expansion announcement describes those plans.
#1 Best Overall

- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan: Works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers[2]
- Stay informed without looking at your screen: When your phone is face down, Pixel HiLight gently alerts you with subtle glowing lights when your favorite contacts are calling or you’re talking with Gemini; exclusive to Google Pixel 11 Pro phones
- Magic Capture catches the moment as you live it: With just one tap, Pixel 11 Pro captures video and photos, and automatically edits, crops, and unblurs a curated collection, ready to share – and you get the memory of how it felt to be in the moment
- Two new cameras for more brilliant photos: A larger telephoto sensor captures 30% more light for clear, beautiful photos and videos, even in the dark[3]; Pixel’s longest zoom ever helps you capture details from impressive distances[4]
How do you switch from Google Assistant to Gemini on Android?
- Check eligibility and availability. Accept Google’s Assistant transition notification if it appears, or install the Gemini app from Google Play if it is available for your device.
- Make Gemini the assistant. Follow the in-app prompts to switch. Google says Gemini becomes the primary assistant after the change.
- Activate it as you normally would. Depending on device settings, you can open the Gemini app, use “Hey Google” if enabled, or use the configured touch shortcut. Exact menu labels and gestures can vary by device and Android version.
- If the wake phrase does not respond, check Voice Match. Confirm that “Hey Google” and Voice Match are configured for the device.
Google documents these steps and the option to switch back through Gemini settings where available in its Android Gemini setup guide. Because Google’s current mobile transition notice sets a discontinuation start date, the existence of a switch-back option in settings should not be taken as a promise of ongoing Assistant access after that date.
Will Gemini for Home replace Assistant on Google Home and Nest?
It is a separate migration. Google is expanding early access for eligible speakers and displays; a household is notified when it can opt in. Once a home switches, compatible devices use Gemini for Home, and Google’s help page says the switch cannot be reversed to Google Assistant. The mobile rollout date does not automatically move a Home device onto Gemini for Home. See Google’s Gemini for Home help page and its October 2025 launch announcement.

Check compatibility and firmware
Google lists these devices for the complete Gemini for Home assistant, subject to minimum firmware requirements:
- Google Nest Audio
- Google Nest Mini (2nd gen)
- Google Nest Hub (1st and 2nd gen)
- Google Nest Hub Max
- Google Home Mini (1st gen)
- Google Home Speaker (2026)
Older Google Home Max, Google Home, Nest Wifi point, and third-party speakers support most features but not Gemini Live. Google lists Cast version 3.76 or later for speakers and Fuchsia version 28 or later for displays. Confirm a specific model, market, language, and firmware against the live compatibility details because eligibility can vary.

Find early access in the Home app
- Update the Google Home app to its latest version.
- Open the app and go to your profile, then Home settings.
- Choose Early Access and follow the prompts if the option is available for your home.
Early access depends on availability and eligibility; seeing the setting does not guarantee that every device in a home supports every Gemini for Home feature.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What does Gemini for Home include, and which features require a subscription?
Google lists basic, no-subscription capabilities including smart-home controls, media search and playback, alarms and timers, calendars, notes, lists, reminders, and general questions. Some features depend on a Home Premium tier: Google lists Gemini Live for Home Premium subscribers and camera search and Home Brief for the Advanced plan. Feature availability and plan terms can change, so check Google’s current feature and plan details before relying on a particular capability.
This Home subscription distinction is separate from switching the assistant on an Android phone. Google’s March 2025 mobile announcement described the Gemini app as available in more than 40 languages and more than 200 countries and regions at that time, and noted requested actions such as music playback, timers, and lock-screen actions. Those were dated app-availability figures, not guarantees that every Gemini feature—or Gemini for Home—is currently available in those languages or places. Google’s announcement provides the original context.
