An Oct. 6, 2026 spot check found no AI answers in several queries; third-party estimates reported less than a month earlier had suggested that AI Overviews appeared in nearly all PAA answers they measured. The reports use different methods and scopes, so they show conflicting snapshots—not a verified trend.
What the October spot check found
In an Oct. 6, 2026 report, Search Engine Watch reporter Sachin Patel said he saw no AI-generated FAQ answers in PAA while checking several searches, including cushions, headphones, shoes and the day’s news. Patel described this as his personal observation, not a systematic or representative measurement, and said results could vary by query.

That makes the report a signal worth watching, but not proof that Google changed PAA across Search. It does not establish how often the same queries showed AI answers before the check, or whether people in other locations, languages, or device and account conditions saw the same results.
How that differs from the earlier estimates
A Sept. 9, 2026 Search Engine Watch article reported two much higher third-party estimates. Both figures were relayed by the publication rather than published as Google measurements.
#1 Best Overall
- Attention-grabbing design meets the latest evolution of the Google Pixel Camera on the new Google Pixel 11 Pro; Gemini Intelligence helps manage details so you can live in the moment[1]; and the phone is available in two sizes
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan: Works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers[2]
- Stay informed without looking at your screen: When your phone is face down, Pixel HiLight gently alerts you with subtle glowing lights when your favorite contacts are calling or you’re talking with Gemini; exclusive to Google Pixel 11 Pro phones
- Magic Capture catches the moment as you live it: With just one tap, Pixel 11 Pro captures video and photos, and automatically edits, crops, and unblurs a curated collection, ready to share – and you get the memory of how it felt to be in the moment
- Two new cameras for more brilliant photos: A larger telephoto sensor captures 30% more light for clear, beautiful photos and videos, even in the dark[3]; Pixel’s longest zoom ever helps you capture details from impressive distances[4]
| Reported period | Estimate | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| August 2026 | 86% in one estimate; 100% in another | Mark Williams-Cook said AlsoAsked data showed 86% of PAA answers were AI Overviews in August. Saeed Khosravi said Allintitle data showed PAA answers were 100% AI-generated starting in August. These are third-party claims reported by Search Engine Watch on Sept. 9, 2026; the article did not provide the underlying methods for either estimate. |
| First week of September 2026 | 97% | Williams-Cook said AlsoAsked recorded AI Overviews in 97% of PAA answers in its sample, up from 86% in August. The reported sample comprised 19.2 million English-language queries made in 2026. This was not a Google-published statistic, and the underlying dataset and full methodology are not available in the reviewed article. |
| Oct. 6, 2026 | No AI answers observed in several checked searches | Patel’s personal spot check covered examples including cushions, headphones, shoes and today’s news. The report did not describe it as a representative sample or state a sample size beyond those examples. |
The figures cannot be treated as a direct before-and-after comparison. The earlier estimates are attributed to third-party datasets, including a stated large English-language sample for AlsoAsked. The October report describes informal checks of a handful of searches. The articles do not establish shared query sets, classification rules, locations, or other conditions that would make the results comparable.
Does this confirm a Google rollback?
No. The October observation is consistent with several possibilities: Google may have reduced AI answers in some PAA results, may be varying or testing their presentation, or may be returning different results across queries. The available reports do not determine which explanation is right or establish a Google-wide change.

Google’s public comments offer broader Search context, but they do not resolve the PAA question. On Aug. 6, 2025, Google VP and Head of Search Liz Reid wrote that “Overall, total organic click volume from Google Search to websites has been relatively stable year-over-year.” Google defined quality clicks as visits where people do not quickly click back. This is Google’s description of aggregate organic traffic, not a count of AI-generated PAA answers (Google’s Aug. 6, 2025 post).
In a separate May 20, 2025 post, Google said AI Overviews drove more than a 10% increase in Google usage for query types that show them in the U.S. and India. Google’s footnote says this was based on internal data from September 2024 through the end of April 2025, comparing query volumes between cohorts shown or not shown AI Overviews for the subset of queries that would show them. It measures neither PAA prevalence nor a 2026 change in PAA presentation (Google’s May 20, 2025 post).

A stronger comparison would repeatedly check the same queries over time and report enough detail for others to interpret the results. Useful controls and disclosures would include:
- Sample size and how queries were selected.
- Consistent language, location, device and account conditions where possible.
- A clear rule for classifying a PAA answer as AI-generated, applied consistently across observations.
- Repeated measurements with dates, so a one-off display is not mistaken for a lasting change.
Until comparable measurements or a Google statement address PAA specifically, the careful conclusion is limited: one October spot check saw no AI answers across several searches, while earlier reported estimates suggested very high prevalence in their samples. Neither establishes what all Google users see.
