Google Antigravity alternatives for agentic software development

Choose by workflow, not by the word “agent.” Google Antigravity is documented as an agentic development environment spanning an editor, terminal and browser. Cursor is the closest documented alternative for developers who want an agent-centered editor that can change code and run terminal commands. GitHub Copilot with Visual Studio Code is the better route when you want to keep an existing editor and select among supported agent harnesses. Claude Code and OpenAI Codex are adjacent, terminal-oriented options, but the product pages reviewed here do not provide enough detail for a full comparison.

No independent, controlled test in the available evidence establishes that one option writes better code or makes developers more productive. Use the comparison below to match execution location, review controls, integrations, enterprise requirements and current plan limits, then run a small trial on your own repository.

What Google Antigravity is

Google describes Antigravity IDE as an agentic development environment rather than an autocomplete feature. Its documented workflow lets agents operate across the editor, terminal and browser. The overview also describes asynchronous local agents, editor-based AI features, browser-agent capabilities and structured artifacts such as plans and code diffs. Those artifacts give a developer something concrete to inspect instead of accepting an opaque block of generated code.

Google documents additional product surfaces, including an Antigravity command-line interface. The product boundaries matter: the Antigravity IDE overview says the IDE is not supported for enterprise customers and directs enterprise users to Antigravity 2.0 or the CLI. Treat that as a deployment constraint, not a minor plan difference.

Do not combine the desktop product with API pricing. Google’s Antigravity agent documentation for the Gemini API describes a preview agent in the Interactions API. It says usage is charged according to the underlying model tokens and tools and that token budgets can be controlled. That statement does not establish the price, quota or allowance for the Antigravity desktop IDE. Verify those separately before approving a purchase or setting a team budget.

The Antigravity documentation home is the appropriate place to check current product surfaces and availability because agent features, supported accounts and deployment guidance can change.

Decision axis Questions to answer Why it changes the choice
Where the agent lives Is it a standalone agent-centered IDE, an agent inside your current editor, or a terminal-first process? Moving editors can disrupt extensions, keybindings and team habits; an embedded agent can preserve them.
Where work runs Are actions local, cloud-based or background tasks? Which repository and credentials are exposed? Execution location affects latency, network access, secrets handling and compliance review.
Actions available Can the agent explore a codebase, make a plan, edit files, run terminal commands, use a browser or delegate subtasks? A feature that sounds similar may stop at chat or code generation instead of completing a checked change.
Review controls Do you receive plans, diffs, artifacts, test output and explicit approval points? Visible intermediate work makes it easier to catch destructive commands, scope creep and incorrect assumptions.
Integrations and model choice Which source-control, issue-tracking, editor and model or harness integrations are documented for your plan? The best fit depends on the systems your team already uses, not on a generic feature list.
Limits and cost What is included, what is rate-limited, and what happens after the allowance is used? Preview terms, model consumption and overage rules can change independently of the feature description.

Keep a dated note of the answers. Product pages can change between a proof of concept and a production rollout, and availability may differ by geography, account type, editor release or plan.

Cursor: the closest documented editor-centered alternative

Cursor’s Agent documentation describes an agent that can complete coding tasks independently, edit files and run terminal commands. That makes it the nearest workflow comparison for a developer who wants the editor itself to be the control surface. The same documentation describes a project coordinator agent for larger tasks that plans work and delegates it.

What the documented workflow looks like

  1. Open the repository in the editor and give the agent a bounded task with the relevant context.
  2. Let it inspect the project and propose or execute changes. Its documented action set includes code edits and terminal commands, so specify which commands are acceptable in your environment.
  3. For a larger change, use the coordinator behavior described in the documentation to break the work into delegated tasks. Keep the task boundaries explicit so each result can be reviewed.
  4. Inspect the resulting diff, run the project’s normal checks and examine any generated files before merging.

When Cursor is a strong fit

  • You want an agent-centered editor rather than a separate terminal window.
  • Your work benefits from an agent that can both modify files and execute local commands.
  • You have larger, multi-part tasks where planning and delegation are useful, but you still want one editor view for review.

What the evidence does not establish

Cursor’s feature documentation supports a workflow comparison; it does not show that Cursor is more capable than Antigravity, produces higher-quality code or completes tasks faster. It also does not provide a like-for-like price or quota comparison in the material available here. Check the current Cursor plan, model access, rate limits and overage terms before committing a team.

GitHub Copilot and Visual Studio Code: keep your existing editor

The existing-editor route is designed for developers who do not want to move their workspace. GitHub’s documentation on Copilot agents covers agent concepts and agentic workflows. Visual Studio Code’s agent-harness documentation lists Copilot, Anthropic Claude and OpenAI Codex harnesses, as well as cloud targets for available agents.

Why this route is different from an agent-centered IDE

Here, the editor is the stable platform and the harness is the selectable agent layer. You can preserve your VS Code extensions, settings, source-control view and debugging workflow while choosing among supported harnesses. That flexibility is valuable when a team has already standardized on VS Code or needs different agents for different repositories.

A practical setup and review sequence

  1. Update Visual Studio Code to a release that supports the harnesses you intend to use, then sign in with the account that owns the required Copilot or provider access.
  2. Open the repository and verify that the selected harness is available in your account and region. The documentation makes clear that availability depends on product, account, editor version and configuration.
  3. Start with a narrow issue, such as adding a test or fixing a reproducible defect. State the files, commands and acceptance checks the agent may use.
  4. Review the proposed plan or changes in the editor, inspect the source-control diff and approve commands deliberately.
  5. Run the repository’s formatter, linter, unit tests and build locally or through your normal CI process. Record failures and ask the agent to address them one at a time.
  6. Save the final diff and test output with the issue or pull request so another developer can reproduce the review.

Important availability caveat

“Supported” does not mean universally included. A harness can require a particular Copilot product, provider account, editor release or configuration. Confirm model availability, organizational policy controls, cloud execution eligibility and usage limits in the current official documentation before designing a team workflow.

Claude Code and OpenAI Codex: adjacent terminal-oriented choices

Terminal-first agents can suit developers who prefer shell commands, scripts and repository automation over an editor-centric interface. The available evidence only establishes that Cursor’s coding-agent help page names Claude Code and OpenAI Codex as other agents. It does not provide the primary documentation needed to compare their capabilities, pricing, security model, background execution or enterprise support with Antigravity or Cursor.

Match the tool to your working style

Choose Antigravity when the browser is part of the task

Antigravity is the only option in this evidence set explicitly documented as spanning editor, terminal and browser-agent capabilities, with asynchronous local agents and structured artifacts. A task that requires navigating a web interface as well as changing a repository is the clearest reason to trial it. Confirm that the IDE is available for your account; enterprise customers should follow Google’s direction to Antigravity 2.0 or the CLI instead.

Choose Cursor when you want one agent-centered editor

Cursor fits a developer who wants independent coding tasks, terminal execution and a coordinator for larger changes inside an editor designed around agent interaction. It is a natural first trial when switching from a conventional editor is acceptable and local command execution is central to the workflow.

Choose Copilot with VS Code when continuity matters

Keep the existing editor when extensions, debugging, source-control habits or team onboarding outweigh the benefits of moving to a new environment. VS Code’s harness model also lets a team evaluate more than one supported agent without changing the entire workspace.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a terminal-first agent when the shell is your interface

A terminal-oriented process may be preferable for scriptable tasks, remote development or automation. Because detailed primary documentation was not assessed for Claude Code or Codex here, treat this as a workflow hypothesis and verify the operational controls before adoption.

A low-risk trial plan for any candidate

Run the same small evaluation on each tool rather than relying on a demonstration task. Use a non-production branch and a repository whose tests are deterministic.

  1. Define the task. Pick one issue that requires repository exploration, a code change and at least one test. Write acceptance criteria in plain language.
  2. Set boundaries. State the allowed directories, commands, network access, package-install policy and secrets policy. Do not provide production credentials for a trial.
  3. Capture a baseline. Run the existing formatter, linter, unit tests and build. Save the output and the starting commit.
  4. Observe planning. Record whether the tool produces a plan, delegates work or starts editing immediately. Note how it handles an ambiguous requirement.
  5. Review actions. Log terminal commands, browser actions where applicable, changed files and points at which you had to approve an operation.
  6. Validate the result. Re-run the baseline checks, add a targeted test if the task permits it and inspect for unrelated edits, insecure defaults and dependency changes.
  7. Measure operational fit. Record setup time, interruptions, failed commands, recovery effort, model or harness availability and any quota message. These observations are more useful than an unrepeatable “it felt faster” impression.
  8. Decide scope. Classify the tool as suitable for experimentation, individual use, a controlled team pilot or production only after security, support and cost owners have reviewed the evidence.

Review and safety controls to configure

  • Use branches and snapshots. Keep agent work isolated so a mistaken command can be reverted without losing unrelated development.
  • Require diff review. Read every changed file, including generated configuration, lockfiles and scripts. A clean-looking final explanation is not a substitute for the diff.
  • Approve destructive commands. Treat deletion, database migration, credential changes, permission edits and broad search-and-replace operations as manual approval points.
  • Run independent checks. Have the project’s own test, lint, type-check and build systems judge the result. Do not rely only on an agent’s statement that checks passed.
  • Limit context and secrets. Provide only the repository and credentials required for the task. Review ignore files, environment variables and uploaded context according to your organization’s policy.
  • Preserve artifacts. Store plans, diffs, command output and test results with the issue or pull request when your process requires an audit trail.

Costs, quotas and procurement questions

The available product pages do not establish a reliable, like-for-like price matrix. Do not infer a desktop IDE allowance from an API page, and do not assume that a feature listed in documentation is included in every plan.

Before a paid pilot, ask each vendor or check its current official plan documentation for:

  • the exact subscription or consumption price and billing region;
  • included model usage, request limits and reset periods;
  • what happens at a limit: blocking, throttling, model fallback or overage billing;
  • whether background, cloud or browser actions consume a different allowance;
  • which models or harnesses are available to individual, team and enterprise accounts;
  • data-retention, training-use and deletion controls;
  • administrative logs, access management and support response terms.

For the Antigravity API preview, the documented charging basis is underlying model tokens and tools, with token-budget controls. Keep that API decision separate from the desktop IDE decision and obtain current terms for both.

Enterprise and governance fit

Enterprise support is a decisive filter. Google’s Antigravity IDE overview explicitly says the IDE is not supported for enterprise customers and points those users to Antigravity 2.0 or the CLI. An enterprise team should therefore evaluate the directed product surface, not quietly standardize on the unsupported IDE.

For Copilot and VS Code, verify the organization’s account type, policy controls and approved harnesses. For Cursor, verify team administration, repository permissions and the plan’s model access. For any terminal agent, document how commands are approved, logged and revoked. These checks belong in the pilot because an agent that works for an individual may not satisfy organizational controls.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Confusing similar names with equivalent behavior

“Agent” can mean an editor assistant, a process that edits files and runs commands, a browser operator or a selectable harness. Use the action table above and test the exact task you care about.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming vendor descriptions are benchmarks

The cited pages describe workflows and supported surfaces. They do not provide a controlled head-to-head measurement of code quality, completion rate or developer productivity. Report your own repeatable trial results instead of declaring an objective winner.

Ignoring execution location

Local, cloud and background execution have different network, latency, credential and compliance consequences. Confirm where a task runs before granting repository or browser access.

Skipping the diff because a plan looked sensible

A plan is an intention, not proof. Inspect the final changes, generated files and command output, then run independent checks.

Using stale plan information

Prices, quotas, model availability and enterprise eligibility change. Check the official pages immediately before publication, procurement and renewal, and record the date and account context of the result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line: shortlist by fit, then verify current terms

Antigravity is a documented editor-terminal-browser environment with local asynchronous agents and reviewable artifacts. Cursor is the closest documented editor-centered alternative, adding terminal execution and coordinator behavior for larger tasks. GitHub Copilot with Visual Studio Code is the practical path for teams that want to retain an existing editor and choose among supported harnesses. Claude Code and OpenAI Codex belong on a separate terminal-agent evaluation until their primary documentation is assessed in detail.

Trial the option that matches your preferred interface, execution environment and review process. Make the final decision only after checking current account availability, enterprise support, model access, quotas, overage rules and your own repository’s test results.
