Short answer: Google and Back Market launched a physical ChromeOS Flex USB kit on April 2, 2026, at approximately $3 in the United States or €3 in Europe. The operating system remains free, but the U.S. Back Market listing showed the kit at $10.99 before trade-in on August 18, 2026. It is a convenience product, not a requirement—and your computer’s certified status, remaining support life, and physical condition matter more than the USB drive.
What Google and Back Market launched
The partnership produced a preloaded USB installer designed to make ChromeOS Flex easier to put on compatible older Windows PCs and Intel-based Macs. It is not a new laptop, Chromebook, or paid edition of ChromeOS Flex. Google’s stated goal is to help people keep usable computers in service instead of replacing them as software support changes, including the end of Windows 10 support.
Google announced an approximate launch price of $3 or €3 on April 2, 2026. That is a launch-price claim, not a guarantee of today’s retail price. The current U.S. listing is on Back Market, where the product was shown as brand new and available to add to cart on August 18, 2026.
Google says the package includes simplified installation guidance and Back Market video tutorials. The listing says one key can be reused to update multiple laptops, one at a time, and limits customers to three units.

Google also describes the pilot USB sticks as “waste-compensated,” meaning equivalent e-waste is collected by Closing the Loop. That is an initiative claim from Google, not proof that every installation prevents a particular computer from reaching a landfill.
What ChromeOS Flex is—and is not
ChromeOS Flex is Google’s operating system for compatible existing PCs and Macs. It emphasizes the browser, cloud storage and web applications, making it a natural fit for email, Google Workspace, streaming, schoolwork and basic productivity.
It can provide a Chromebook-like experience, but it does not turn every computer into an officially manufactured Chromebook. Firmware behavior, device drivers, peripherals, update eligibility and support can differ. Google’s security and performance positioning also depends on a supported model, current updates, suitable configuration and ordinary user precautions.
ChromeOS Flex is a poor substitute for Windows or macOS when you need Windows-only programs, traditional desktop plug-ins, advanced games, specialized peripherals or professional creative applications. A Linux distribution may offer more desktop-software flexibility and control, although its setup and hardware support vary by distribution.

Kit contents and current U.S. price
The current U.S. product page identifies the drive as a Google-branded USB-A key with 16GB of storage and USB 3.0. It uses a swivel thumb-drive design and lists dimensions of 2.2 × 0.75 × 0.4 inches. The page displays a 15-ounce weight; because that is unusually high for a thumb drive, it should be treated as the seller’s listed specification rather than an independently verified measurement.

Check the Back Market listing before ordering because marketplace availability and price can change. The $10.99 figure is a dated observation, not a permanent price.
Do you need to buy the USB kit?
No. Google makes ChromeOS Flex available as a free download and documents a do-it-yourself installer using the Chromebook Recovery Utility. You supply a suitable USB drive and handle the boot and installation steps yourself.
| Option | Cost | Best for | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|
| Back Market kit | $10.99 U.S. listing checked August 18, 2026 | Beginners, convenience and a reusable preloaded drive | Costs more than using a USB drive you already own |
| DIY ChromeOS Flex | Free operating-system download; USB drive required | Confident users, repair enthusiasts and small deployments | More setup, firmware and troubleshooting work |
| Linux distribution | Usually free | Users wanting broader software choice and control | Driver support and maintenance vary |
| Refurbished laptop | Varies | People needing healthier hardware and a warranty | Higher upfront cost |
| New Chromebook | Varies | Those wanting integrated hardware and predictable support | Requires replacing the existing computer |
The kit therefore sells preloading and guidance, not access to the operating system. It is most defensible for someone uncomfortable creating bootable media or managing several legacy machines. If you already have a reliable USB drive and know how to use a boot menu, the free route is usually the better value.

Check your computer before buying anything
Compatibility is model-specific. Open Google’s ChromeOS Flex certified models list, updated August 13, 2026, and search for the exact manufacturer and model number—not merely the brand or processor family.
- Certified: the preferred status for a dependable installation.
- Minor issues expected: usable with documented compromises.
- Major issues expected: generally unsuitable unless you are experimenting.
- Decertified: avoid for a primary computer.
The list gives each model an end-of-support year. A machine that boots ChromeOS Flex but reaches support end in 2026 or 2027 may be a poor long-term investment. Read the model notes as well: Google’s list, for example, notes webcam problems on certain MacBook Air models.
Before committing, verify that the laptop has:
- A healthy battery, storage device, display, hinges and charger.
- No serious overheating or damaged Wi-Fi hardware.
- Working keyboard, trackpad and ports.
- Enough memory and performance for your browser-based workload.
- All required applications available on the web or through an acceptable alternative.
How to install ChromeOS Flex safely
1. Identify and evaluate the model
Record the exact model number, check its status and end-of-support year, and read Google’s hardware notes. Do this before purchasing the kit or erasing anything.
2. Back up everything
A full installation can erase Windows or macOS and local files. Copy documents and photos to cloud or external storage, export anything that needs it, and confirm access to passwords, license keys and recovery information. Keep the manufacturer’s recovery media until testing is complete.

3. Create or obtain the installer

4. Boot from USB
Insert the drive, restart the computer and open its model-specific boot menu or firmware settings. There is no universal key: consult the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact PC or Mac.
5. Test before installing
When the installer offers a live or try-first option, use it. Check Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, audio, keyboard, trackpad, webcam, external display, sleep and wake, and touchscreen behavior. Successful booting alone does not prove every component works.
6. Install only after testing
Follow the on-screen prompts, expecting the internal drive to be erased. Remove the USB drive when instructed and finish account setup.

Who should choose the kit?
Good candidates
- Owners of a physically sound laptop listed as Certified, with several years of support remaining.
- People whose work is mostly browser-based.
- Households or small organizations that value a reusable, guided installer.
- Anyone trying to postpone replacement of a still-functional computer.
Poor candidates
- Owners of unsupported, decertified or major-issues models.
- Computers with failing storage, dead batteries, broken hinges, damaged displays or severe overheating.
- Users dependent on Windows-only software, advanced gaming, specialist peripherals or professional creative tools.
- People who already own a USB drive and are comfortable with Google’s free installation process.
- Devices with little remaining ChromeOS Flex support.
How strong is the environmental case?
Keeping a compatible, working computer in use can avoid the materials and manufacturing associated with an immediate replacement. Google cites research claiming ChromeOS uses 19% less energy on average than comparable systems, but that figure comes from a study cited by Google—not independent testing of every laptop, workload or power profile.
The practical sustainability decision is therefore conditional: extending the life of a healthy machine is more persuasive than installing software on hardware that is already failing, or buying a USB kit when a supported refurbished replacement would last substantially longer.
Bottom line
The ChromeOS Flex USB kit is real and useful, but it is optional. Its announced $3 price made convenience inexpensive; the $10.99 U.S. listing seen on August 18, 2026 makes the free DIY installer more attractive. Check Google’s certified-model list and support end date first, test hardware from USB, and buy the kit only if its preloaded setup and guidance are worth the premium to you.
