Google’s October 15, 2026 AI Search update changes how publishers are discovered and cited. AI Overviews and AI Mode now surface more inline links, clearer official-site links, timely article carousels, related-article thumbnails and creator context. Google says AI Overviews reach more than 2.5 billion monthly active users and AI Mode more than one billion monthly users, so publishers need to measure these surfaces separately from ordinary Search and Discover.
The practical approach is to keep inclusion enabled in Search Console unless there is a deliberate reason to opt out, establish page- and country-level baselines, monitor ranking and spam signals, and continue producing distinctive content that meets Google’s ordinary SEO and Discover requirements. ChatGPT should be measured as a separate channel because current, first-party specifications were not established in the available documentation.

What changed in Google AI Search on October 15, 2026?
Google describes the release as making AI Search “simpler, more visual, and more engaging.” The changes affect both AI Overviews and AI Mode.

- Official-site section: Google is testing a dedicated top section for one or two official pages. It can include context explaining why a particular link is useful.
- Timely article carousels: Article carousels are expanding to more locations and languages, which may increase opportunities for current reporting and other time-sensitive pages.
- Related-article presentation: Related links receive larger thumbnails and a more clickable layout.
- Creator context: Information about creators and related sources is receiving greater prominence.
These interface changes do not guarantee a citation or a click. They change the ways a page can be selected and displayed, so reporting should distinguish inclusion in an AI response from traffic, engagement and conversions.

How large are AI Overviews and AI Mode?
In a June 3, 2026 website-owner announcement, Google reported more than 2.5 billion monthly active users for AI Overviews and more than one billion monthly users for AI Mode. Those are Google-reported global usage figures, not a promise that every query or country receives the same feature.
For a publisher, the numbers justify treating AI-surface visibility as its own measurement problem. A page can appear as a cited source without receiving a click, and an impression in a generative-AI report does not prove that the answer was accurate or that a reader saw the page in the same context you recorded.
How to control AI-surface inclusion in Search Console
Google’s Search generative AI control became available worldwide on August 31, 2026. It covers AI Overviews, AI Mode and generative-AI features in Google Discover.
Rank #2
| Setting | What happens | Operational implication |
|---|---|---|
| Include (default) | Your links and content can appear in, or ground, covered AI features. The site can receive impressions and traffic from those surfaces. | Use this when you want visibility and are prepared to measure it. |
| Exclude | Your content is prevented from appearing or grounding responses in the covered features. | You give up traffic and impressions from AI Overviews, AI Mode and generative-AI Discover features. |
Control changes generally take a few days to propagate. Google says exclusion usually takes effect within one to two days after the control goes live, although caching and other propagation steps can take longer. Record the change date and do not interpret a short transition period as a performance trend.
A measurement workflow that avoids false conclusions
- Capture a baseline. Export page-level and country-level impressions from Search Console’s generative-AI performance reporting before changing the control.
- Annotate the change. Record whether the site was included or excluded, the date, and any related template or content releases.
- Separate surfaces. Compare AI-surface impressions with ordinary Search, Discover and referral traffic rather than combining them into one total.
- Check pages and countries. Review which URLs appear in AI responses and where they appear; performance can differ substantially by market.
- Preserve volatile evidence. Save screenshots or exports when an interface, citation or carousel changes, because the presentation can change after the fact.
- Validate outcomes. Compare clicks, engaged sessions and conversions with impressions. An impression is not a click and is not evidence that Google’s generated answer was correct.
What is changing in Google Discover?
Google Search Central’s changelog records a February 2026 Discover Core Update and new guidance on increasing the likelihood that content appears in Discover. Discover is still editorially selective and traffic can be volatile; meeting the guidance improves eligibility rather than guaranteeing distribution.
Images and page presentation
Google says it uses schema.org markup and the og:image meta tag when determining image thumbnails in Search and Discover. Use a representative, high-quality image and keep the metadata consistent with the page so the thumbnail accurately reflects the article.

Content areas Google highlights
The generative-AI optimization guidance calls out non-commodity content as well as local, shopping, image and video content. It also clarifies that ordinary SEO practices remain relevant. A page should still be crawlable, useful, fast enough for its audience and easy to understand; adding AI-related wording alone does not make commodity content distinctive.
Are Google Ads appearing in AI answers?
Google Ads documentation says ads in AI Overviews expanded to desktop and additional countries during 2025. Google was also testing ads in AI Mode in the United States for deeper, more complex questions. Testing status, country availability and formats can change, so do not assume that an ad shown in one market is available everywhere.
Demand Gen placement controls
Demand Gen campaigns let advertisers choose placements across YouTube, Discover, the Google Display Network and Gmail, including YouTube Shorts. Placement controls are separate from the editorial decision to cite a page in an AI answer; buying an ad does not establish an organic citation.

Creator partnership tooling
Google also documents tools for discovering sponsored-video opportunities, paid and organic reporting, and creator search and outreach. These features support campaign coordination and measurement, but their availability and reporting fields should be confirmed in the account and market where a campaign will run.
What should SEO teams do for Google AI results?
Prioritize information that is not interchangeable
Google’s guidance emphasizes unique, non-commodity content. Add original reporting, first-hand documentation, clearly attributed data, useful examples or analysis that another page does not provide. A superficial rewrite of existing results gives an AI system little reason to select or cite the page.
Make the page useful beyond a text answer
- Use descriptive headings and a structure that lets readers find the specific fact or procedure they need.
- Provide useful images or video where they clarify the subject, with accurate metadata and captions when appropriate.
- For local or shopping topics, include concrete details, availability or constraints that help a reader make a decision.
- Maintain page experience and technical accessibility; AI visibility does not replace normal crawl, index and usability requirements.
Keep spam compliance central
Google says its SpamBrain system is an AI-based spam-prevention system. Sites that violate spam policies may rank lower or disappear from results entirely. The same spam policies apply to generative-AI responses, so mass-produced pages, manipulative links and other prohibited tactics can damage both conventional and AI-surface visibility.

“Google poisoning tracking tools” is not an official Google product category. The work is a monitoring program that combines Search, Search Console, AI-surface checks and spam-policy review.
Best Value
Signals worth tracking
- Query-level ranking changes: Watch important queries for sudden drops, irrelevant results or a new cluster of pages repeating the same manipulated claim.
- Manual-action and spam-policy signals: Check Search Console messages and review the site against current spam policies when visibility changes sharply.
- Link-profile anomalies: Investigate unexpected spikes in referring domains, anchor-text patterns or low-quality links rather than assuming every drop is an algorithmic penalty.
- AI-answer accuracy: Run repeatable checks for priority queries and save the answer, cited URLs, date, country and device. Flag false or manipulated claims for correction and escalation.
- Traffic quality: Compare impressions with clicks, engaged visits and conversions. A large AI impression count can coexist with little referral traffic.
Keep an evidence log with query, date, location, device, visible sources and screenshots. That record helps distinguish an interface change from a ranking change and a genuine spam incident from normal volatility.
How does ChatGPT fit into an AI-search SEO plan?
The available first-party material does not establish current ChatGPT specifications for citation behavior, referral measurement or advertising availability. Do not assume that ChatGPT behaves like Google AI Overviews or AI Mode, and do not report Google’s AI-surface impressions as ChatGPT exposure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPublish distinctive, well-structured, evidence-backed material that can stand on its own, then measure ChatGPT referrals separately from Google Search, Discover and AI features. Use platform-specific logs and analytics where available, and label the source and date of any ChatGPT observation because product behavior can change.
A practical comparison of monitoring options
Whether you use built-in reports, a rank-monitoring service or manual review, evaluate the option against the same criteria:
| Evaluation axis | Question to answer |
|---|---|
| Surfaces covered | Does it measure ordinary Search, AI Overviews, AI Mode, Discover and ChatGPT, or only one of them? |
| Evidence granularity | Can it show page, query, country, device, citation and impression details? |
| Alert latency | How quickly will it flag a ranking, citation or traffic change? |
| Control support | Can you record inclusion or exclusion decisions and annotate them? |
| Spam diagnostics | Does it help investigate manual actions, link anomalies and manipulated results? |
| Export or API support | Can you preserve evidence and join it with analytics or incident records? |
| Independent verification | Can you reproduce a reported citation or ranking manually in the same country, device and date context? |
No single report proves why Google selected a source. Use multiple signals and retain the underlying evidence.
