They do not necessarily show the same sources. A featured snippet normally presents an excerpt selected from one page for a specific query. An AI Overview generates a synthesized answer and attaches supporting links; it may search related subtopics and draw on more than one page. Google has not published a complete source-selection formula for either feature, and no publisher can guarantee inclusion.
The short answer: source overlap is possible, not guaranteed
Google’s two most prominent answer features use different presentation and selection systems. A featured snippet is a selected Search result in which the descriptive passage appears before the traditional blue links. An AI Overview is a generated summary with links that Google says support the information shown.

Because the systems have different jobs, an AI Overview and a featured snippet can cite the same page, different pages, or appear with no matching source at all. Google says AI Overviews can use query fan-out: several related searches across subtopics and data sources. It also says AI features may use different models and techniques. Featured snippets are selected for the individual search request.
Google does not disclose a universal list of domains, a fixed ranking threshold, or a complete formula that predicts which page will be selected. Being first in ordinary web results, meeting technical requirements, or appearing in one feature does not guarantee appearance in the other.

What a featured snippet shows
One selected page and an excerpt
Google defines a featured snippet as a special result box where the descriptive snippet is shown first. The box may contain a paragraph, list, table, or another extract from a page. The source is ordinarily one page chosen because Google’s systems judge it a good fit for that particular query.
The visible text is an excerpt, not a complete reproduction of the page. Selecting the result normally opens the passage represented in the box. If Google cannot send the browser to a precise location, the link may open at the top of the source page instead.
Selection is automatic
Site owners cannot submit or nominate a page for a featured snippet. Google Search Central answers the question of whether a publisher can mark a page as a featured snippet with: “You can’t.” Its systems decide whether a page is suitable for a user’s search request and elevate it when appropriate.

That placement does not change the basic distinction: the displayed answer is still an excerpt selected from a page, rather than a multi-source synthesis written for the results page.
What an AI Overview shows
A synthesized response with supporting links
Google describes an AI Overview as a synthesized response intended to help people understand a complicated topic and continue exploring. Instead of placing one page’s passage at the center, it generates an explanation and places links around or alongside the claims it presents. Those links are described by Google as supporting web content.
An Overview does not appear for every query. Google says it is shown when its systems determine that the feature adds value beyond classic Search. A simple lookup may therefore produce ordinary results while a more complex question triggers an Overview.

Query fan-out can broaden the source set
Google Search Central says an AI Overview may use query fan-out. In practice, the system can issue multiple related searches to investigate subtopics or consult different data sources before constructing the response. A question about a health topic, for example, might involve separate searches for symptoms, timing, risks, and treatment context. The resulting links need not be the top results for the exact wording typed by the user.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

That means links can change when the model, query interpretation, or generated response changes. Google has not published a complete explanation of how each candidate page is scored or how the final supporting links are ordered.
Eligibility is necessary but not sufficient
For a page to be eligible as an AI Overview supporting link, Google says it must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet. It must satisfy the normal technical requirements for Search. Google says there are no additional AI-specific technical requirements, special schema, or new machine-readable file that publishers must add.
Eligibility does not mean that Google will crawl the page, index it, select it for an Overview, or display a link to it. Those are separate stages. A technically accessible page can remain absent from a particular Overview, just as an indexed page can fail to receive a featured snippet.
How the two source-selection systems differ
| Comparison point | Featured snippet | AI Overview |
|---|---|---|
| What the user sees | A prominent excerpt selected from a page, often a paragraph, list, or table. | A generated explanation accompanied by links Google describes as supporting the presented information. |
| Primary unit of selection | A page and passage judged suitable for the individual query. | Potentially several pages or data sources gathered while answering the query and related subqueries. |
| Search process described by Google | Systems decide whether a page is a good fit for the search request. | Systems may use query fan-out, different models, and different techniques before generating the response. |
| How often it appears | Shown when Google selects a page for a snippet; it may also occur in related-question results. | Shown only when Google determines that an Overview adds value; it does not trigger for every query. |
| Publisher submission | No way to nominate a page directly. | No special submission or AI-only markup; normal Search eligibility is required. |
| Publisher controls | nosnippet blocks snippets; max-snippet can reduce the chance of a featured snippet but cannot guarantee removal. |
Normal crawling, indexing, and snippet eligibility apply; Google provides no control that guarantees a page will or will not be a supporting link. |
| Guarantee of inclusion | None, even for a page that ranks highly. | None, even for a page that is indexed and technically eligible. |
| Measurement in Search Console | Google’s documented reporting is within overall web Search performance. | Google says AI-feature traffic is included in overall web Search reporting; the documented guidance does not provide a separately isolated AI Overview metric. |
Do AI Overviews and featured snippets cite the same websites?
Sometimes, but there is no evidence that they routinely or universally do. The two features can overlap because both use Google’s web index and both seek pages relevant to the query. They can diverge because a featured snippet selects a passage for one request, while an AI Overview may investigate related searches and synthesize several pieces of evidence.

- The featured-snippet source page: the page from which the displayed passage is extracted.
- An AI Overview supporting link: a page Google presents as support for information in the generated response.
- The underlying evidence used during generation: pages or data sources that may inform the system even when they are not all shown as visible links.
A visible link in an Overview is therefore not necessarily a one-to-one equivalent of the page supplying a featured-snippet excerpt. Conversely, a page shown in a featured snippet may be absent from the Overview even when it covers the same subject.
What the 2026 comparison study found
Scope of the evidence
A peer-reviewed ICWSM 2026 audit examined 1,508 real pregnancy- and baby-care-related queries. The study looked at pages where an AI Overview and a featured snippet appeared on the same results page. Its findings describe that health-focused sample and its audit design; they are not a measurement of every Google query, country, language, or future Search version.
The 33% inconsistency result
In that sample, the information shown by the AI Overview and featured snippet was inconsistent in 33% of cases when both appeared. “Inconsistent” refers to the answers or information presented, not a universal percentage of source-domain overlap. The result should not be restated as “33% of the web uses different sources” or as a global probability that two features cite different websites.

Other findings from the sample
- AI Overviews appeared more frequently than featured snippets in the study’s query sample.
- Both response types were generally relevant to the questions tested.
- Featured-snippet sources had a significantly higher proportion from commercial categories than AI Overview sources or conventional blue-link results in that sample.
These observations are useful evidence that the features can behave differently, but they do not reveal Google’s production algorithm or establish how the systems behave for technology, shopping, local, news, or other query classes.
Why the answers and links can diverge
Different output goals
A featured snippet is optimized to identify a concise passage that directly answers one query. An AI Overview is optimized to explain a broader question and provide paths for follow-up exploration. A page can contain the best short definition without covering every subtopic an Overview decides to include.
Related searches change the evidence set
Query fan-out can cause an Overview to examine questions that are not visible in the original wording. If the response covers causes, exceptions, timing, and safety at once, the supporting links may come from pages that would not be candidates for a single-sentence featured snippet.

Models and techniques can vary
Google says AI features may use different models and techniques. A change in model behavior, query interpretation, or the set of related searches can alter both the generated wording and the links shown. Featured-snippet selection and AI Overview generation should therefore be treated as separate opportunities, not as two labels for the same ranking event.

Presentation affects what counts as a match
Two features can draw on overlapping pages yet present different claims. A snippet might quote a page’s definition, while an Overview combines that definition with qualifications from another source. Comparing only domain names can miss this distinction; comparing the actual claims and passages is more informative.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What publishers can do about eligibility
Follow the ordinary Search fundamentals
Google’s guidance says existing SEO fundamentals remain relevant for AI features. A publisher should:
- Allow Google to crawl the pages that contain the important information.
- Use internal links so related content is discoverable.
- Provide a good page experience on supported devices.
- Keep important information available as text rather than placing it only in an inaccessible format.
- Use relevant, high-quality images and video when they genuinely help explain the subject.
- Ensure structured data matches the content visible to users.
Google’s generative-AI guidance also emphasizes useful, original content made for the audience rather than commodity text created only to attract a feature. None of these practices guarantees a crawl, an index entry, a featured snippet, or an AI Overview link.
Understand snippet-preview controls
The nosnippet directive blocks snippets for a page. The max-snippet directive limits the amount of text Google may show and can reduce the chance of a featured snippet, but it does not guarantee that the page will be excluded from one. Google does not specify one universal minimum snippet length because the amount varies by content, language, and platform.

A publisher deciding to restrict snippets should weigh the loss of preview visibility against the desired control over excerpts.
Best Value
Do not add imaginary AI markup
Google says publishers do not need special AI schema or a new AI-specific file to become eligible for AI Overviews. Correct, visible structured data and sound technical access matter, but a page cannot force an Overview citation by adding a label that Google has not documented.
How readers should evaluate the sources they see
For a featured snippet
- Read the displayed passage, but treat it as an excerpt rather than the whole answer.
- Open the source page and check the surrounding context, date, author, and any qualifications.
- Look for the page’s original references when the topic involves health, safety, law, finance, or other high-consequence decisions.
- Compare another authoritative page if the snippet is unusually brief, absolute, or missing conditions.
For an AI Overview
- Separate the generated explanation from the supporting links shown with it.
- Open more than one supporting link when the Overview makes several distinct claims.
- Check whether each link actually supports the nearby statement rather than merely mentioning the same topic.
- Watch for missing exceptions, dates, geographic limits, or product-version details.
- Use the linked pages as the basis for important decisions instead of treating the generated paragraph as a substitute for the underlying information.
When the two features disagree
Disagreement is a reason to investigate, not proof that one feature is automatically correct. Compare the exact wording, publication dates, scope, and cited evidence. A featured snippet may be narrower and more directly quoted; an Overview may include additional context but also combine claims from several pages. If neither presentation resolves the issue, search for a primary authority or the original study behind the claim.
What can be measured in Search Console?
Google says traffic from AI features is included in the overall Search Console Performance report for the Web search type. The documented guidance does not provide a separately isolated, universally comparable report for AI Overview clicks versus featured-snippet clicks. As a result, a site owner can monitor overall web-search impressions and clicks but should not assume that Search Console will identify every AI Overview interaction as a distinct line item.

What Google has said about accuracy and web traffic
Google’s 2024 accuracy statement
In May 2024, Google said its tests found AI Overview accuracy on par with featured snippets. The company also acknowledged misinterpretations and some inaccurate results in that same communication. This was Google’s own testing claim, not an independent study and not a guarantee that every Overview is as accurate as every featured snippet.
Google’s 2025 statement about clicks
On August 6, 2025, Google Search executive Liz Reid wrote: “We continue to send billions of clicks to the web every day and are committed to prioritizing the web in our AI experiences in Search.” That is Google’s statement about its traffic and product approach, not an independently audited measurement of clicks from AI Overviews or featured snippets.
Neither statement supplies a source-selection formula. They describe Google’s stated goals and testing, while the 2026 audit supplies a focused external comparison of answer consistency.
Common assumptions that do not hold
- “The first organic result will get the featured snippet.” Ranking position does not guarantee selection.
- “A featured-snippet page will automatically be cited by the Overview.” The systems can choose different pages.
- “The 33% figure applies to all searches.” It comes from 1,508 pregnancy- and baby-care queries in one 2026 audit.
- “A page needs special AI schema.” Google says normal Search eligibility and technical requirements apply.
- “A visible Overview link is the only source used.” Query fan-out may involve related searches and data sources beyond the links displayed.
- “Search Console has a dedicated AI Overview report.” Google’s documented guidance places AI-feature traffic in overall Web search reporting.
Bottom line for searchers and publishers
Featured snippets and AI Overviews are related Search features, not interchangeable source lists. A featured snippet usually foregrounds one page’s selected passage. An AI Overview synthesizes an answer and can attach several supporting links gathered through related searches. Their sources may overlap, but Google’s public documentation does not support a claim that they always match, and no public formula predicts every selection.
For readers, open the underlying pages and check context whenever the claim matters. For publishers, make important content crawlable, clearly structured, original, and technically eligible, then treat display in either feature as a decision made by Google rather than an entitlement.
