Short answer: Google’s documented AI Overviews experience in Search gives you a summary with links; the official Search description reviewed does not document an “add to Google Calendar” or event-creation control inside an Overview. To reliably create an event, use Google Calendar’s native Create workflow. If you want an assistant to interpret a natural-language request, Google documents separate calendar actions in Gemini Apps, Gemini in Gmail, and Google Assistant, each with its own setup and limits.
This distinction matters because “Google AI” is used for several different interfaces. An Overview in Search, Gemini Apps, Gemini in Gmail, Assistant, and Gemini’s meeting-time suggestions in Calendar are not interchangeable features. The steps below identify what each surface can do and the safest way to confirm that an event was actually saved.

Google describes AI Overviews as “a quick snapshot of key information about a topic or question with links so you can explore more on the web.” You can read the feature description on Google’s AI in Search page. That description is different from the event-entry instructions in Google Calendar Help.

What an AI Overview can—and cannot be assumed to do
An AI Overview appears as part of a Search results page. Its documented role is to summarize information and point you to supporting web pages. For example, an Overview might explain a holiday date, suggest questions to investigate, or summarize several sources. The official Search material reviewed does not describe a button, command, or confirmation that creates a Google Calendar event directly from that summary.

That is a documentation boundary, not proof that every account, test, or future interface behaves identically. Google can run limited experiments or change Search features. If an account-specific Search interface displays a calendar control, treat the control as a separate, explicitly labeled workflow and verify the resulting event in Calendar. Do not infer that an event was created simply because the Overview mentioned a time, date, appointment, or reminder.
Why the names cause confusion
Google uses AI branding across several products. “Gemini in Search” is often used conversationally to mean an AI answer, but an AI Overview is still a Search result feature. Gemini Apps, Gemini in Gmail, Google Assistant, and Gemini-assisted scheduling in Calendar have different interfaces, permissions, and availability rules. A prompt that works in one surface does not establish that it works in another.
Create an event with Google Calendar’s native workflow
Calendar is the dependable path when the goal is a saved event with a title, date, time, guests, recurrence, conferencing, or other event settings. The desktop instructions below follow Google’s documented creation flow.
Desktop: use an empty time slot
- Open Google Calendar and select the calendar view you want.
- Click an empty time slot on the date and time when the event should begin.
- Enter a title and the relevant event details.
- Choose the calendar that should contain the event, especially if you have access to shared calendars.
- Set any available options you need, such as all-day status, repetition, guests, or a video meeting.
- Click Save, then open the event to confirm its calendar, date, time, and other important fields.
Desktop: use the Create button
- In Google Calendar, click Create.
- Select the event type shown by Calendar and enter the title, date, time, and any additional information.
- Select the destination calendar. For a shared calendar, you need access that permits creating events on it.
- Configure guests, recurrence, all-day status, conferencing, and other options as needed.
- Save the event and check the calendar grid or event details page for the saved result.
Quick entry
Calendar also supports natural-language quick entry in the event-creation box. Google’s examples include “Tennis practice at 5pm” and “Dinner at 7pm.” Enter the activity and time, review the interpreted date and time, and save. Quick entry is still a Calendar workflow: the event is not created until Calendar saves it.

Shared calendars
When creating an event for a shared calendar, select that calendar in the event form. Your account must have the necessary access. If the calendar is not available in the selector, create the event on a calendar you can edit or ask its manager for the appropriate permission.
Event options worth checking before you save
- Time zone: Confirm the displayed zone when an event involves travel or people in different regions.
- All-day and repetition: An all-day event and a recurring event have different effects on availability and notifications.
- Guests: Add invitees in Calendar when attendance matters; do not assume a text summary has sent invitations.
- Location and conferencing: Add the physical location or video-meeting details in the event editor.
- Calendar identity: Verify whether the event belongs on your personal, work, or shared calendar before saving.
Use Gemini Apps for natural-language calendar actions
Google separately documents calendar actions in Gemini Apps. This is not the same as an AI Overview in Search. Gemini Apps can create, find, and edit calendar events after the required connection is enabled.
Setup requirements
- Sign in to Gemini Apps with the Google account whose calendar you want to use.
- Turn on Keep Activity, as required by Google’s Gemini Apps instructions.
- Connect Google Workspace to Gemini Apps and approve the relevant connection for Google Calendar.
- Use the same account in Gemini and Calendar so the request is applied to the intended calendar.

Use a complete request that includes the activity, date, and time. Google gives examples such as “Create an event for [time] on [day, date] to [activity, task]” and “Add [event name] to my calendar.” You can also specify Google Calendar explicitly with @Google Calendar. For an existing schedule, a request such as “What’s on my calendar today?” asks Gemini to retrieve calendar information rather than create a new item.

Which calendar receives the event?
Gemini creates events on the default calendar unless you specify another calendar in the request. Include the calendar name when the destination matters, then open Calendar to verify that Gemini used the intended one.
Gemini Apps limitations
Google states that Gemini Apps cannot add or invite people to events. It also cannot add or update the location or description of an existing event. Complete those changes in the Calendar app. These restrictions mean a successful Gemini response is not a substitute for reviewing the event record, especially when guests, a meeting place, or detailed instructions are important.
Verify the result
- Open Google Calendar after Gemini responds.
- Search for the event title or navigate to the specified date.
- Check the selected calendar, start and end times, time zone, recurrence, location, description, and guest list.
- Edit any missing fields directly in Calendar and save again.
Gemini in Gmail: a different route to calendar actions
Google Workspace Updates describes Gemini in Gmail as supporting selected calendar actions, including creating calendar events. On April 9, 2025, Google announced an expansion of this capability to more than 20 additional languages. This is a Gmail-side workflow in the side panel, not an AI Overview in Search.

Google Assistant can add events, subject to stated availability
Google Assistant Help documents asking Assistant to add events and report on a schedule. The cited page states that its AI-supported actions are available only in English, in the United States, and to users aged 18 or older. Google also warns that AI can make mistakes and recommends checking events in Calendar.
Those conditions describe Assistant’s documented availability on the page reviewed; they do not describe AI Overviews. If Assistant reports that it added an event, open Calendar and confirm the saved details. The relevant instructions are at Create calendar events and ask about your schedule on Android.

Calendar has another AI-assisted feature: Gemini can suggest meeting times while you are creating or rescheduling an event. Google documents this separately from both Search Overviews and event creation by Gemini Apps. It requires an eligible Google Workspace plan.
Google lists situations in which suggestions are unavailable, including use of the mobile Calendar apps, meetings longer than eight hours, too many attendees, and date ranges in the past. When the feature is unavailable, use Calendar’s ordinary date-and-time controls or ask attendees for availability. Details and eligibility are in Let Gemini in Google Calendar find times to meet.

Common failure modes and fixes
“The Overview gave me the date, but I cannot find an event.”
An informational summary is not a documented event-creation confirmation. Open Calendar and create the event with the native workflow. If you intended to use an assistant, use Gemini Apps, Gmail’s Gemini panel, or Assistant according to that product’s setup.
“Gemini says it created the event, but it is missing.”
- Confirm that Gemini and Calendar use the same Google account.
- Check that Google Workspace is connected to Gemini Apps and that Keep Activity is on.
- Search all calendars you can view, including the default calendar and any shared calendar.
- Check the date, time zone, and wording used in the request.
- Open Calendar directly and create or repair the event if the item was not saved correctly.
“The event exists, but guests, location, or description are wrong.”
Gemini Apps cannot add or invite people to events, nor add or update the location or description of an existing event. Open the event in Calendar, make those edits there, and save.
“Suggested meeting times are unavailable.”
Check whether you are using a mobile Calendar app, selecting a meeting longer than eight hours, adding too many attendees, or looking at a past date range. Google lists each of these as a condition that can prevent suggestions. You can still choose a time manually in Calendar.
“The AI answer sounds confident, but the details may be wrong.”
Google’s Gemini Apps Help says, “Gemini Apps can hallucinate responses or provide outdated information.” For travel, medical, legal, work, or other high-consequence appointments, verify the date, time, time zone, location, participants, and source information before relying on the event. Calendar is the final record to inspect.
A verification checklist for important appointments
- Confirm the event appears in Google Calendar, not only in an AI response.
- Check the calendar name and account that own the event.
- Check the exact date, start time, end time, and time zone.
- Review recurrence and all-day settings.
- Confirm guests, invitations, location, conferencing, and description in Calendar.
- Look at notifications and reminders if missing an appointment would have consequences.
- For information supplied by AI, open the cited source links and resolve conflicts before finalizing the event.
Bottom line on AI Overviews versus Create Event
Use an AI Overview to learn and follow links; use Google Calendar’s Create workflow to make a calendar record. Gemini Apps, Gemini in Gmail, and Assistant can provide additional conversational entry points when their separate requirements are met, while Gemini’s Calendar feature can suggest meeting times on eligible Workspace plans. Regardless of the entry point, verify the saved event in Calendar before treating it as scheduled.
