Yes—Google AI Edge Gallery lets you try supported AI models directly on a compatible phone, with inference running on the device. It is an experimental model playground, not a full replacement for a cloud assistant: what it can do and how quickly it does it depend on the app version, model, and phone.
What Google AI Edge Gallery is
Google AI Edge Gallery is an open-source showcase app from Google AI Edge. Rather than being one fixed chatbot, it lets you discover or load supported models and experiment with them on a mobile device. Google describes the project as an experimental beta, so features and behavior can change. See the official project and current requirements.

The app uses Google AI Edge tools and the LiteRT runtime; model discovery and downloads are integrated with Hugging Face. LiteRT-LM documentation covers model families such as Gemma, EmbeddingGemma, Llama, Phi, and Qwen, but runtime support does not mean every model or capability is available in every Gallery release. What you can do with it
The official project and Android listing describe a collection of demos and utilities. The available features depend on the installed release and the model selected; some require a specifically supported model. Check the current Google Play listing.

- AI Chat and Thinking Mode: Chat with supported models. Google says Thinking Mode began with the Gemma 4 family; it is not a universal feature of every model.
- Ask Image: Give a supported model an image and ask questions about it.
- Audio Scribe: Work with audio, including transcription and translation features described in Google’s launch coverage. Google’s announcement explains the app and Audio Scribe.
- Instant Media Search and Video Moment Finder: Search photos and find moments in video using the listed demo features.
- Prompt Lab: Experiment with prompts and compare how a model responds.
- Mobile Actions and Tiny Garden: Try additional interactive demos; their presence does not mean every model can perform arbitrary phone actions.
- Model management and benchmarking: Download or load models and run benchmarks on your device. A benchmark is specific to the hardware, model, and conditions; it is not a promise of the speed you will see in everyday use.
Google’s September 2025 post reported 500,000 APK downloads in two months. That is a Google-reported download count, not a measure of unique users or current active use.
What “fully local” means—and what it doesn’t
For supported tasks, the model performs inference on the phone rather than sending the prompt to a cloud model. Google says inference does not require an internet connection. That can make an already downloaded model useful offline and keeps that inference on the device.

Not every part of the experience is automatically offline. Finding and downloading models requires network access. Google’s May 19, 2026 announcement also described MCP support: the model can reason and choose a tool locally, but a tool request is sent to the MCP server configured for that tool. The server may be on a home computer or a cloud endpoint. Google described Streamable HTTP MCP support as experimental on Android at the time and said iOS support was coming; check the current app listing for platform availability. Those connected-tool and history features should not be conflated with model inference: the privacy and connectivity implications depend on the feature and, for MCP, the server you configure. The app’s on-device claim alone is not an independent privacy audit.

Which phones are compatible?
The current project requirements list Android 12 or later and iOS 17 or later. Check the relevant store listing and project page before installing, since requirements can change. An operating-system match is a baseline, not a guarantee that every model or demo will run well on a particular device. See the iOS listing.
There is no evidence-based single “best phone” for Gallery. The Android listing says performance depends on CPU and GPU hardware. Available memory and storage, the chosen model, and the task also matter: a phone that can install the app may still be a poor fit for a large model or a demanding feature.

Not on the basis of this app alone. First check whether your existing phone meets the OS requirement, install Gallery, and try the model and feature you actually care about. If performance or storage is inadequate, compare phones using the specific model’s measured performance and the memory and storage available—not the app’s minimum OS requirement by itself. No blanket upgrade need or universally best handset is established.

Choose Gallery when local experimentation, offline inference, or inspecting on-device models matters more than having a single broadly capable assistant. It is not a guaranteed quality, speed, or privacy winner for every task; the trade-off depends on your phone, model, and whether you use connected features.
