The first thing to check is your payment setting. Google Ads currently uses postpay, prepay or monthly invoicing where available. That setting determines when money is due; your billing country, currency and account eligibility determine which settings and payment methods you can use.

Postpay charges you after advertising activity, prepay uses funds deposited in advance, and monthly invoicing extends an approved credit line. Their charge triggers, records and remedies are different, so identify the setting shown under Billing > Settings > How you pay before interpreting a charge.

Start with the payment setting, not the card

Google distinguishes a payment setting from a payment method. The setting is the schedule or arrangement—postpay, prepay or monthly invoicing. The method is the instrument used to settle it, such as a card or bank payment. A card can therefore be attached to different billing arrangements, and the same arrangement can offer different methods in different countries.

Google Ads Help says, “Payment settings determine when you pay for your ads.” In practice, billing country, currency, account history and eligibility affect the options displayed. An individual account may temporarily show fewer choices while Google reviews eligibility. Do not assume that a method or setting available to another advertiser is available to your account.

How each Google Ads payment setting works

Setting When money is committed What triggers payment or delivery changes Credit or eligibility
Postpay (formerly automatic payments) Ads run first; accrued costs are charged to the primary payment method. Google says it charges on the first day of the month or when the account reaches its payment threshold, whichever comes first. The threshold can rise as you reach it. No separate monthly-invoice credit line is described, but payment methods and availability still depend on account and location.
Prepay (formerly manual payments) You add funds before advertising; costs reduce that balance as ads run. When the available balance is depleted, ads stop until more funds are added. Prepay is not offered in every country. Availability depends on billing country and currency.
Monthly invoicing Approved advertisers accrue costs against a Google-set credit line. An invoice is issued each month and has its own due date. Exceeding agreed terms or credit limits can affect delivery. Application, review, terms and credit limit are required; initial criteria do not guarantee approval.

Postpay: a threshold is not a fixed billing date

With postpay, Google accumulates advertising costs and automatically charges the primary payment method. The stated trigger is the first day of the month or the moment the account reaches its payment threshold, whichever occurs first. Consequently, there is no universal “Google Ads charge date” for every postpay account.

The threshold starts at an amount and may increase, up to a maximum, as the account reaches it. An account spending at a different pace can therefore be charged on different days or at different amounts. A manual payment can also be initiated, but starting one does not guarantee that an automatic charge has already been stopped: Google may need time to recognize the manual transaction.

Prepay: an advance balance that can stop delivery

Prepay puts money into the account before ads run. As campaigns accrue cost, Google deducts that cost from the available balance. When the balance reaches zero, advertising stops until another payment is credited. This is a funding model, not a promise that every country or currency supports the option.

Because delivery depends on the remaining balance, monitor the account before a campaign launch, a weekend or a planned budget increase. A payment that has been initiated but not yet recognized may not immediately restore the balance.

Monthly invoicing: an approved credit arrangement

Monthly invoicing is different from receiving a monthly statement. An approved advertiser spends against a credit line, then receives an invoice with payment terms and an exact due date. Google’s general guidance says terms are typically 30 days, but the terms accepted for your account and the due date printed on each invoice control what you owe.

Google’s initial eligibility guidance includes all of the following: an established, registered business for at least one year; an active Google Ads account in good standing for at least six months; and at least $5,000 USD per month, or the local-currency equivalent, in any three of the preceding 12 months. These are initial criteria, not an automatic qualification. Google reviews the application and decides whether to approve it, what credit line to assign and which terms and payment method apply.

When will Google Ads charge you?

Postpay timing

For postpay, compare the charge with both the first day of the month and the account’s current payment threshold. A charge can occur before month-end if the threshold is reached. The threshold can change over time, so the date and amount from one month should not be treated as a permanent schedule.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prepay timing

Prepay does not normally create a later automatic bill for costs already covered by the balance. You pay in advance, then the balance is consumed by ad delivery. The operational risk is the opposite of postpay: depleted funds can stop ads.

Monthly-invoice timing

For monthly invoicing, the invoice itself is the authority. Read its due date, agreed payment terms, currency, invoice number and payment instructions. Do not substitute the statement-availability date or a typical 30-day term for the date printed on your document.

How to verify a charge in your account

Use the account records before disputing a transaction with your bank. The following sequence separates an actual advertising charge from a pending payment, a duplicate entry, a tax item or a payment that has not yet been matched.

  1. Identify the setting. In Google Ads, open Billing > Settings and read the value beside How you pay. Note whether it says postpay, prepay or monthly invoicing.
  2. Open Billing activity. Set the date range to include the bank transaction and inspect charges, payments, credits, adjustments and taxes. For postpay, several entries can reflect separate threshold events rather than one monthly bill.
  3. Open the individual payment record. In Billing > Summary, select the payment and print its receipt when that option is available. Match the amount, date, currency and payment method to the bank record.
  4. Check whether a manual payment is still processing. If you paid manually and then saw an automatic charge, Google says recognition can take time. Keep both receipts and compare how each entry was applied before treating the second entry as an error.
  5. For invoiced accounts, use the invoice number. Follow the invoice’s instructions and include the Google invoice number—not a local tax-invoice number—when sending payment or asking support to trace it. Include any relevant credit-memo numbers.
  6. Escalate with the records attached. If the account history and receipt do not explain the bank entry, use Google Ads support and the current case-specific troubleshooter. The in-account Billing pages and the invoice take precedence over a generic example.

Statements, invoices and receipts are different documents

Postpay and prepay statements

For most postpay and prepay accounts, a statement is a record of activity, not a bill demanding another payment. It can show the starting balance, new activity, applicable tax, adjustments such as overdelivery credits, payments received and the ending balance. Charges may happen during the month even though the statement is produced only once.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google says the previous month’s statement is generally available by the fifth business day of the following month. Weekends and bank holidays can move that point. In most countries, Google does not mail or email these records; retrieve them from the account when the relevant document is available.

Need proof of one transaction sooner? Open Billing > Summary and print the individual payment receipt. A receipt documents that payment; it is not the same as a monthly statement or an invoice.

Monthly-invoicing documents

An invoiced account receives an invoice tied to the approved credit arrangement. Use the invoice’s due date, payment terms, currency and payment instructions. Google says incoming payments may be applied first-in, first-out to the oldest open invoices by default, and some countries do not permit changing that allocation rule.

Tax invoices, local formats and other statutory documents vary by country. A statement’s availability date is not an invoice due date, and neither date tells you when a postpay threshold charge occurred.

What to do about an unexpected or duplicate charge

“Charged after already initiating a manual payment”

Start with the payment receipt and Billing activity. Google’s documented explanation is that an automatic payment can occur after a manual payment is initiated because the manual payment has not yet been recognized. Wait for the records to update, then verify whether the additional amount appears as an account credit or was allocated to outstanding activity.

“Charged after you stopped your ads or canceled your account”

Stopping delivery does not necessarily erase costs already accrued or a payment already in processing. Review the final activity dates, payment receipt and any remaining balance. Use the troubleshooter for the account-specific explanation rather than assuming every post-cancellation charge is invalid.

“Charged for more than average daily budget on some days”

Compare the charge with campaign delivery and the billing activity for the same dates. A bank charge reflects the billing event, not necessarily one day’s average budget. Investigate the campaign-level cost and the account’s payment trigger together.

“Charged more than once in a month”

Multiple postpay charges can result from reaching the payment threshold more than once; they are not automatically duplicate transactions. Match each bank entry to a separate receipt and Billing activity line. For prepay, distinguish a new top-up from an advertising-cost deduction. For monthly invoicing, compare payments with open invoices and credit memos.

“Charged outside the billing cycle”

First confirm that the account is not postpay with a threshold charge. The first day of the month is only one possible postpay trigger, and a threshold can occur earlier. Then check the transaction date, processing date and receipt before contacting support.

“Charges on bank statement don’t match my Google Ads account”

Compare currency, amount, date, payment method and the descriptor shown on the receipt. A bank may display a descriptor that differs from the Ads account label. If no Billing activity or receipt matches, secure the account and contact Google Ads support using the official charge-troubleshooting path.

Refunds, credits and the documented double-charge case

Refund outcomes depend on the scenario. In the specific double-charge case covered by Google’s troubleshooter, Google states: “Google can’t refund or cancel the payment, but any additional payment will serve as a credit applied to future advertising spend.” That wording describes the documented scenario; it is not a universal rule for every account credit, overdelivery adjustment, tax correction or billing dispute.

Before requesting help, record the payment IDs or receipt details, the date and currency, the payment setting, the affected account and the reason you believe the amount is wrong. Do not ask your bank to reverse a transaction before checking whether Google has already posted it as usable advertising credit, because a reversal can create a separate account problem.

Monthly invoicing: application and payment controls

What Google evaluates

The $5,000-per-month figure is measured in any three of the preceding 12 months and is stated in USD or the local-currency equivalent. It sits alongside the business-age and account-history criteria. Meeting those figures only makes an account a candidate for review; Google still decides whether to approve the arrangement.

How to pay an invoice correctly

  • Use the exact due date printed on the invoice.
  • Follow the payment method and remittance instructions on that document.
  • Include the Google invoice number, not a local tax-invoice number.
  • Include applicable credit-memo numbers so payments can be matched.
  • Check whether your country applies payments first-in, first-out to the oldest open invoice.
  • Keep the remittance confirmation and verify that the payment appears against the intended invoice.

Because terms and credit limits are account-specific, an invoice that says 30 days should be paid within that stated period; “typically 30 days” is not permission to defer a different due date.

Country, currency and tax qualifications

Payment methods, prepay availability, tax documents and invoice formats differ by billing country and currency. A local tax invoice may be available in one jurisdiction but not another. If your account is moving country, currency or billing entity, recheck the options displayed in Billing rather than relying on a previous account’s setup.

Google’s billing interface can change. For a live issue, use the current labels in Billing > Settings, Billing > Summary and Billing activity, and treat the current invoice or receipt as the controlling record.
