Then verify that its release supports the Google Ads API version you plan to call. Google officially maintains libraries for Java, .NET, PHP, Python, Ruby and Perl. Node.js and Go options appear in Google’s documentation, but they are community-maintained rather than tested, contributed to or maintained by Google.
A client library is the practical default for a new integration. Google also permits a direct HTTP client, which can make sense when your stack cannot use a supported library or when you need to control transport and generated code yourself.

The short answer: choose by language first, compatibility second
There is no universally best Google Ads API client library. The strongest choice is normally the one that matches the language already deployed in your application, because that avoids introducing another runtime, package manager, authentication pattern and operations burden.
- Identify the application’s production language and runtime. A Java service should normally use the Java library; a Python service should normally use Python, and so on.
- Check the documented runtime and package requirements. The libraries do not all support the same versions of Java, PHP, Python or .NET.
- Match the library release to the Ads API version. Google publishes minimum client-library versions for each major API release and directs developers to the changelog for minor-release requirements.
- Decide whether you need Google-maintained support. The six official libraries have Google’s maintenance model. Node.js and Go require your team to validate compatibility and assess the community maintainer’s release cadence.
Google’s own guidance is direct: “Start with a client library if you’re new to the API.” That recommendation reflects the libraries’ higher-level abstractions, authentication helpers and generated service interfaces, not a promise that one language binding is faster than another.

Which libraries are official, and which are community-maintained?
| Language | Google’s maintenance status | Package channel or distribution | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Java | Official | Maven Central | Applications already built and deployed on Java |
| .NET | Official | NuGet | Applications targeting a supported .NET framework |
| PHP | Official | Composer and Packagist | PHP applications able to deploy the required gRPC dependency |
| Python | Official | PyPI | Python services, scripts and data workflows using a supported Python version |
| Ruby | Official | Official language package distribution | Ruby applications whose API release requirements are satisfied |
| Perl | Official | Official language package distribution | Perl applications whose API release requirements are satisfied |
| Node.js | Community-maintained; Google does not test, contribute to or maintain it | Community package distribution | Node.js teams willing to own compatibility verification and support decisions |
| Go | Community-maintained; Google does not test, contribute to or maintain it | Community package distribution | Go teams willing to own compatibility verification and support decisions |
“Official” here means Google lists and maintains the language library as part of its supported client-library family. It does not eliminate normal release management: you still need to upgrade when an API version sunsets, test authentication and review behavior changes.
Runtime requirements and API v25 compatibility
The following minimums are the useful version gate when targeting Google Ads API v25. They are minimum client-library releases for that major API version, not recommendations to pin indefinitely. Google also lists minimums for v24 and v23; use the current compatibility table and changelog when selecting a minor release.
| Library | Runtime requirement documented by Google | Minimum library release for API v25 | Installation route |
|---|---|---|---|
| Java | Java 8 or later | 44.0.0 | Maven Central |
| .NET | .NET Framework 4.7.2 or later; .NET Standard 2.1; or .NET 8.0 | 26.1.0 | NuGet |
| PHP | PHP 8.1 or later; gRPC is required | 33.6.0 | Composer and Packagist |
| Python | Python 3.9 through 3.14; Python 3.11 or later is recommended | 31.2.0 | PyPI |
| Ruby | Not stated by the overview used for this comparison | 43.0.0 | Official package distribution |
| Perl | Not stated by the overview used for this comparison | 33.0.0 | Official package distribution |
Python 3.9 and 3.10 can install the current client, but the Python guide warns of a deprecation warning with google-ads version 32.0.0 and later. Python 3.11 or newer is therefore the safer target for a new deployment, provided the rest of your application supports it.
For .NET, Grpc.Net.Client is the default transport. Grpc.Core is deprecated and should be treated as a legacy-maintenance dependency rather than the starting point for a new integration.
How to choose, step by step
1. Start with the language already in production
Do not select a library because a sample looks shorter or because another team uses that language. Reusing your application’s existing language lets you share configuration, logging, retry policy, secrets handling, testing tools and deployment images. It also avoids operating a second service solely to make Ads API calls.

If your product has several services, choose the service that owns advertising data and credentials. A Python analytics job and a .NET web application may legitimately use different libraries, but each service should independently satisfy the API-version and runtime checks.
2. Verify the runtime before writing code
Compare the production runtime, not just a developer workstation, with the library’s documented support. Check the base container or server image, compiler or interpreter version, package-manager lockfile and native dependencies. PHP’s gRPC requirement is especially important: a package can resolve successfully while the production image still lacks the extension needed to establish a connection.
Recommended Free Tools
For .NET, identify whether the application targets .NET Framework, .NET Standard or modern .NET. A target outside the documented set creates a support problem before any API request is made.
3. Match the client release to the Ads API version
Write down the API version your code will request and compare it with Google’s compatibility table. For API v25, the minimums are Java 44.0.0, .NET 26.1.0, PHP 33.6.0, Python 31.2.0, Ruby 43.0.0 and Perl 33.0.0. A package newer than the minimum may be preferable, but it still must be compatible with your runtime and application dependencies.
Major-version compatibility is not the whole check. Google’s changelog can impose additional requirements for minor releases, so review it before pinning a version. Record the API version and client-library version together in your dependency documentation; otherwise a routine package upgrade can silently change the supported API surface.

4. Choose your maintenance model
With Java, .NET, PHP, Python, Ruby or Perl, Google publishes and maintains the client library. With Node.js or Go, Google’s documentation identifies community-maintained choices but explicitly disclaims testing, contribution and maintenance. That means your team must verify generated services, authentication behavior, release compatibility, issue response and migration instructions.

The trade-off is ownership: your project must budget time to test new API releases and respond if the community package lags behind Google’s version schedule.
What each official library means in practice
Java
Use the Java library when your service already runs on the JVM. It is distributed through Maven Central and requires Java 8 or later. Maven dependency management fits teams that already use reproducible builds, dependency scanning and repository-level version control. Confirm the API-version minimum before selecting the artifact version.
.NET
The .NET library is distributed through NuGet. Google documents support for .NET Framework 4.7.2 or later, .NET Standard 2.1 and .NET 8.0. New applications should use the default Grpc.Net.Client transport. Grpc.Core is deprecated and is intended for maintaining legacy integrations, not for starting a new one.
PHP
The PHP library is installed with Composer and is available through Packagist. It requires PHP 8.1 or later and depends on gRPC. Validate the extension in the same environment that will run the application, including command-line workers and scheduled jobs; a web server’s PHP configuration may differ from the CLI configuration used by background processes.

Python
The Python package is available on PyPI and supports Python 3.9 through 3.14 in the cited guide. Python 3.11 or later is recommended because Python 3.9 and 3.10 produce a deprecation warning with google-ads 32.0.0 and later. Python is often convenient for reporting and data pipelines, but treat the client package as a production dependency: pin it, test authentication and monitor API-version announcements.
Ruby
Ruby has an official Google library. The compatibility documentation provides API-release thresholds, including 43.0.0 as the minimum for API v25. The available guide material does not state an equivalent Ruby runtime minimum, so check the current language guide and your deployment environment before committing to a version.
Perl
Perl also has an official library, with 33.0.0 listed as the minimum for API v25. As with Ruby, verify the current runtime and dependency requirements in Google’s language-specific documentation; the compatibility threshold alone is not a complete deployment check.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Client library or direct HTTP: which integration route fits?
Google’s quick-start material presents two routes: install a client library or use an HTTP client directly. A client library is the better default when you want generated request and response types, language-native authentication configuration and less protocol plumbing. It also gives new users a documented path through common services.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDirect HTTP can be reasonable when your organization has a standardized HTTP gateway, when the application language lacks a maintained library you can accept, or when you need complete control over transport and serialization. You then own more details: authentication headers, request encoding, retries, pagination, error parsing, service discovery and API-version changes. Choosing HTTP does not remove the need for a developer token, Google Cloud configuration or an authorized Ads account.
Best Value
Access prerequisites before the first request
The library only supplies the programming interface. Access still requires account and credential setup.
- Developer token: obtain and configure the token approved for your Google Ads API access level.
- Google Cloud project and authentication: create or select the project used by the integration and configure the authentication method required by your chosen library.
- Google Ads account: identify the manager or customer account the application will access and grant the necessary user or service credentials.
- Customer ID: configure the Ads customer identifier. The Python quick-start specifically calls this out as a prerequisite; in practice, every integration needs a precise account target for requests.
- Secret handling: place tokens, client credentials and refresh data in the deployment’s secret manager rather than source control, and use separate credentials for development and production.
Complete these steps before debugging package code. A correctly installed library still returns authorization or account errors when the developer token, Cloud project, authentication configuration or customer ID is wrong.
Paging, streaming and connection behavior
The libraries can manage paging for GoogleAdsService.Search, reducing the amount of bookkeeping required when a query returns multiple pages. Use SearchStream when streaming results suits the workload and connection behavior. Use Search when you want paginated results, including situations where a long-lived stream is less reliable.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Choose the method based on workload rather than language preference. A batch export may benefit from streaming, while an interactive tool may prefer pages so it can process, checkpoint and retry smaller units. Whichever method you select, test behavior with realistic result sizes and transient connection failures.
Common selection mistakes and how to avoid them
- Picking by sample code alone: a short example does not prove runtime compatibility. Check the production interpreter, framework and native dependencies first.
- Using the newest package without checking the API version: client and API releases are coupled. Compare the target API version with the published minimum and changelog.
- Treating Node.js or Go as Google-supported in the same sense as the six official libraries: the documentation labels them community-maintained, so assign compatibility ownership internally.
- Ignoring PHP’s gRPC dependency: verify the extension in the actual deployment image, not only on a laptop.
- Starting new .NET work on Grpc.Core: Google identifies it as deprecated and intended for legacy maintenance; use Grpc.Net.Client for new code.
- Assuming installation equals authorization: developer-token approval, Cloud authentication, Ads account access and customer identification are separate setup requirements.
- Failing to pin and test upgrades: record the library and API versions together, run integration tests after upgrades and review Google’s release notes.
A practical decision matrix
| Your situation | Recommended direction | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Existing Java application | Official Java library | Matches the deployed runtime; Java 8 or later is documented |
| Existing .NET application targeting a supported framework | Official .NET library with Grpc.Net.Client | Uses the supported target and default transport |
| PHP application with controllable server dependencies | Official PHP library after validating PHP 8.1+ and gRPC | Composer workflow is supported, but gRPC must be available |
| Python service on 3.11 or newer | Official Python library | Within the documented range and avoids the 3.9/3.10 deprecation warning |
| Ruby or Perl application | Official language library after checking the current runtime guide | Google provides official libraries and API-version thresholds |
| Node.js or Go application | Community library only after an internal support review | Google does not test, contribute to or maintain these options |
| Unsupported runtime or need for a uniform HTTP gateway | Direct HTTP client | Avoids an incompatible binding, while transferring protocol and maintenance work to your team |
How to make the final choice defensible
Document four decisions in the integration ticket: the application language, the production runtime, the target Google Ads API version and the exact client-library release. Add the package channel and any native dependency, such as PHP’s gRPC extension. For a community-maintained Node.js or Go option, also document who owns compatibility testing and what happens if the package does not support a future API release.
This record turns “we chose the library used in a sample” into a reproducible engineering decision. Revisit it whenever Google announces a new API version, your runtime changes or the selected package changes its support policy.
