Google has reported an AdMob incident that began on October 8, 2026 at 10:31 UTC. Interstitial video ads, the full-screen ads shown between app screens, fail to render on Android and iOS. Affected users see a solid black screen with a close button that does not respond. Google says the only workaround is to force close the affected app, and its Google Ads Status Dashboard still listed the incident as active at its 15:52 UTC update that day.
What Google reports
The incident notice describes errors, high latency, or unexpected behavior in AdMob. It names one symptom specifically: interstitial video ads fail to render into a black screen, and the close button does not respond. Google lists both Android and iOS apps as affected. The notice does not state a root cause, the number of users affected, the regions involved, or an estimated time for restoration.

Because the notice is limited to these symptoms, it is not evidence that every black screen or frozen app on October 8 has the same cause. A black screen that appears outside a full-screen video ad, or in an app that does not show ads, is a separate question.

What to do if an ad traps you
Google’s stated workaround is to force close the affected app. Forcing the app to close clears the black screen, but Google does not describe it as fixing the underlying service. If the ad fails again after you reopen the app, the problem is probably still on Google’s side.
- iPhone with Face ID: Swipe up from the bottom edge and pause in the middle of the screen to open the app switcher. Swipe the app’s card up and off the top of the screen.
- iPhone with a Home button: Double-press the Home button to open the app switcher, then swipe the app’s card up and off the screen.
- Android with gesture navigation: Swipe up from the bottom and hold to open Recent apps, then swipe the app’s card away. On phones with button navigation, tap the square Recent apps button instead.
- Android, if swiping does not close it: Open Settings, go to Apps, select the app, and tap Force stop. Menu labels differ by manufacturer and Android version.
What is and is not established
- Established: the start time, the affected platforms, the symptoms, and the active status at 15:52 UTC, all as reported by Google.
- Not established: the cause, the number of users affected, the geographic scope, and the end time.
- Anecdotal: user posts describing a close button that is not working. Search queries such as “Admob interstitial ad close button is not working” show that people are looking for help. They do not measure how many people are affected.
- Corroborated but not controlling: Search Engine Land has also reported on the incident. Google’s own notice and dashboard remain the authoritative status records.
An earlier close-button incident
Google’s dashboard also lists an earlier AdMob incident that ran from August 20 to September 1, 2026. It involved missing or unresponsive close buttons on interstitial and rewarded ads on Android and iOS. The record does not show that the two incidents share a cause, and the October 8 notice does not refer back to it.

Guidance for app publishers
Google’s AdMob help page on interstitial ads recommends placing them at logical breaks in app content, such as between pages, stages, or levels. It advises against placing them on app load or when the user exits the app. This is general implementation guidance. Nothing in the incident notice links the October 8 outage to how any publisher placed its ads.

- A full-screen video ad appears between app screens and the display turns solid black.
- The close button on the ad does not respond to taps.
- The problem began on or after 10:31 UTC on October 8, 2026, which is 6:31 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time, 3:31 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time, and 11:31 a.m. British Summer Time.
- Force closing the app clears the screen, and the same ad failure returns on reopening.
If the problem happens without a video ad, or it began before the incident’s start time, look for a different cause in the app or device.
