Goodreads now lets readers rate books in quarter-star increments, from 0.25 to 5.0. The change went live on October 5, 2026, and gives readers more precision than the former whole-star scale. It does not change old ratings automatically, and the book-page histogram still shows five rounded bars.
How Goodreads’ new rating scale works
Readers can select ratings in 0.25-star steps, including half stars. That means a book can receive a rating such as 2.25, 3.5, or 4.75 instead of only a whole number from one to five. The minimum is 0.25 and the maximum is 5.0. Goodreads described the feature in its October 5, 2026 announcement as a response to years of reader feedback; it did not publish a count of requests.

Why the histogram may not match your exact rating
The finer scale applies to the rating a reader selects, but Goodreads says its book-page histogram remains a five-bar display. Fractional ratings are rounded into those bars: values ending in .25 or .5 round down, while .75 rounds up. For instance, a 3.5 rating appears in the 3-star bar, but a 3.75 rating appears in the 4-star bar. The bar placement does not alter the rating the reader chose.

Goodreads says the 1-star bar includes ratings from 0.25 through 1.5. The display therefore groups multiple precise ratings together rather than showing a separate bar for every quarter-star value.

What happens to old ratings and reviews?
Existing whole-star ratings are not rewritten. They remain as they are unless a reader chooses to update an old rating. Written reviews are unaffected, and Goodreads says its rating and review guidelines remain the same.
Could book averages change?
Goodreads says averages may shift over time as readers start using more precise ratings. The company expects those changes to be balanced because readers differ on whether they would round a rating up or down. That is Goodreads’ expectation, not a measured result: the October 5 announcement reports no adoption figures or observed impact on book averages.
