The reported change reflects a slightly lower valuation multiple applied to the firm’s 2027 earnings-per-share estimate—not a change in the rating.
What changed in Goldman Sachs’ SHW call?
The price target fell by $10, or about 2.4%, from $420 to $410. Fischer kept the Buy rating. The reported target horizon is 12 months.

StreetInsider reproduced Fischer’s explanation: “We are Buy rated on SHW with a 12-month price target of $410 (down from $420) which is based on applying a 29.8x multiple (from 30x) on our 2027 EPS estimate.” The report attributed the change in the multiple to slightly lower peer multiples. The original Goldman Sachs research note was not available, so the mechanics and rationale here are limited to the analyst comments reported by StreetInsider and Investing.com.
Why did Goldman Sachs lower the target?
The reported explanation is a modest valuation adjustment: Goldman Sachs lowered the multiple used on its 2027 EPS estimate from 30x to 29.8x, citing slightly lower peer multiples. The reports do not provide the underlying 2027 EPS figure or the full valuation model, so the $410 target cannot be independently reconstructed from the disclosed information.

The analyst comment also said SHW had traded between 17x and 31x over the preceding six years. That is a historical range cited by the analyst, not a forecast of where the shares should trade next.

Management said leading indicators pointed to continued demand softness in the second half and described broad-based cost inflation in raw materials, energy, logistics and packaging. The company also said an 8% Paint Stores Group price increase was scheduled to take effect September 1. CEO Heidi G. Petz said, “While customer sentiment and the leading indicators we track point to continued demand softness in the second half, we remain focused on the actions within our control.” These statements and results appear in the company’s Q2 2026 results release filed with the SEC.
