Golden Corral is not shutting down nationwide. Several independently operated restaurants closed in 2026, while the company says six new locations are in development. Because about 99% of the chain is locally owned and operated by franchisees, a closure in one city does not necessarily signal a corporate decision to end the brand.
Is Golden Corral going out of business?
No evidence currently shows a chainwide shutdown. Golden Corral said in an April 30, 2026 announcement that six restaurants were in development, including projects in Tennessee, Florida, Texas, Alabama and Puerto Rico. Chief executive Lance Trenary said the company remained committed to expanding access to the brand.

The chain’s franchise structure explains why closure reports can appear alongside expansion news. Independent operators make decisions about leases, labor, renovations and store-level finances. A restaurant can therefore close permanently even while Golden Corral recruits franchisees and builds elsewhere.

Brownsville: a temporary renovation closure became permanent
The Brownsville restaurant had closed during the summer for what was initially expected to be a temporary renovation. It ultimately shut for good on September 14 after operating for more than 35 years. Hernandez said Golden Corral’s routine refresh cycle, which he described as occurring roughly every seven years, coincided with a substantially higher rent and broader cost pressures. He concluded that continuing the lease did not offer a viable path for the business.

Alton: staffing was the stated reason
The Alton operator announced an April 30 closing date but shut the restaurant seven days earlier, on April 23. The closure notice said the store could no longer be staffed well enough to serve guests properly. A regional report identified Alton as R.F.R. Inc.’s second exit in the St. Louis-area market and said three other Golden Corral locations in the metro area remained open.
Canton: no public explanation from the owner
Canton’s February 1 closure was confirmed without a stated cause. Since the restaurant was independently owned, the absence of a public explanation does not establish whether rent, labor, sales, a lease decision or another factor drove the shutdown.

How many locations are closed?
TheStreet’s April 24, 2026 review counted about 340 Golden Corral restaurants in the United States and Puerto Rico. At that time, 41 were marked permanently closed and five were marked temporarily closed. That snapshot can change as franchisees reopen, relocate or leave the system, so it should not be read as a final count for the entire year.

The company also announced revised franchise incentives, including potential reimbursements connected to the first three years of sales, a $5,000 grand-opening marketing credit and up to $45,000 toward manager training for qualifying franchisees. These are company-stated program terms and may change; prospective operators should confirm current eligibility and conditions directly with Golden Corral’s franchise-development team.
Why can one Golden Corral close while others open?
Local economics are the key distinction. Corporate strategy may support new development, but each franchisee still faces its own lease rate, wage market, staffing availability, maintenance obligations and sales trend. Brownsville illustrates the effect of a lease and renovation decision; Alton illustrates a labor constraint; Canton demonstrates that an owner may close without publishing a reason. None of those cases, by itself, indicates that the parent company has ordered a nationwide shutdown.

Golden Corral also cited a 252% year-over-year increase in searches for “all you can eat buffet near me.” That figure is a company-reported marketing metric, not an independent industry study, but it shows why the company continues to present demand and expansion as part of its strategy.

A listing marked “temporarily closed” can reflect renovation, a short-term staffing interruption or a pending ownership decision. “Permanently closed” indicates that the specific restaurant is not expected to resume operations at that address. Brownsville shows why status can change: it was initially treated as a temporary renovation closure before the franchisee made the shutdown permanent. For the most reliable local status, check the restaurant’s current phone listing and Golden Corral’s location directory, then confirm with the local operator when those sources disagree.
