For a US investor who wants a direct hedge against measured consumer-price inflation over a defined holding period, Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS) are usually the more mechanically precise tool. The US Treasury adjusts TIPS principal with the non-seasonally adjusted CPI-U and, at maturity, pays at least the original principal. Gold has protected purchasing power over some long periods and can diversify a portfolio, but its market price does not reliably rise with every short-term CPI increase.
The better choice depends on what you are trying to hedge: realized CPI, an inflation surprise, currency or institutional stress, or overall portfolio risk. Holding period, sale timing, real yields, volatility, taxes and whether CPI-U resembles your spending matter as much as the label “inflation hedge.”

The direct answer: TIPS for CPI matching, gold for a broader and less predictable hedge
TIPS and gold solve different problems. TIPS embed an explicit inflation-adjustment rule in a Treasury security. Gold has no contractual CPI adjustment, coupon or maturity redemption promise; its protection comes, if it comes, through a market price that responds to many forces besides inflation.

If your priority is preserving a known dollar amount against official US consumer inflation and you can hold to a selected maturity, TIPS provide the clearer rule. If your priority is an asset that may perform during monetary, currency or market stress and you accept uncertain short-term inflation behavior, gold can play a complementary role rather than replacing TIPS.

How TIPS create an inflation-adjusted payoff
Principal follows CPI-U
TreasuryDirect says TIPS are issued in 5-, 10- and 30-year terms. The Treasury uses the non-seasonally adjusted US City Average All Items Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U), published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, to adjust principal. When the index rises, the security’s principal rises. When deflation occurs, principal can fall while the bond is outstanding.
This is a rule tied to a published index, not an estimate of your own costs. A retiree whose budget is concentrated in housing, medical care or a particular region may experience inflation different from the national CPI-U basket. TIPS can still deliver the promised CPI-U adjustment while failing to match that household’s personal inflation rate.
Fixed coupon, changing dollar interest
The coupon rate is fixed at auction, but the interest calculation uses the adjusted principal. Interest is paid semiannually. If principal has risen with inflation, each coupon payment in dollars rises even though the percentage coupon is unchanged. If principal has fallen during deflation, the dollar coupon can fall as well.

A TIPS investor should not assume that every semiannual payment will be identical in dollars.
The maturity floor is not an early-sale guarantee
TreasuryDirect describes the maturity result this way: “When a TIPS matures, you get either the increased (inflation-adjusted) price or the original principal, whichever is greater.” That floor applies when Treasury redeems the security at maturity.
A TIPS can trade below its purchase price before then. Real interest rates, the remaining term, market demand and changes in expected inflation affect its market value. Selling before maturity converts those movements into an actual gain or loss. The original-principal floor does not set a minimum resale price.
Where investors can buy and the tax timing to understand
TreasuryDirect says TIPS are available at auction and through banks, brokers and dealers. The account or dealer affects how you place an order and what transaction costs you incur, but the Treasury security’s indexation rule is the same for a given issue.

TreasuryDirect also says income from Treasury marketable securities is subject to federal tax and exempt from state and local taxes. Its tax guidance says annual TIPS inflation adjustments are reported on Form 1099-OID even when the security has not matured. That reporting can create taxable income before the investor receives the principal adjustment in cash. The practical tax result depends on account type and individual circumstances, so the reporting rule should not be treated as personalized tax advice.
What the historical gold evidence does—and does not—show
Long periods of outperformance are real but interval-dependent
The World Gold Council’s 2024 long-term return analysis reports average annual compounded US-dollar returns from 1971 through 2023 of 8% for gold, 4% for US CPI and 4.4% for the US 3-month Treasury. Those figures describe that specific period and metric. They do not establish that gold will beat inflation over every future interval, or that it would beat a matched-duration TIPS position after costs, taxes and volatility.
Gold sometimes rose strongly in moderate-inflation years
The World Gold Council’s “Case for Gold 2026” reports that gold in US dollars outpaced US and world CPI since 1971. It also reports an average annual gold-price increase of 10% in years when US inflation was between 2% and 5%. The calculation uses year-over-year US-dollar LBMA Gold Price PM and US CPI from January 1971 through December 31, 2025, covering 13 low-inflation, 30 moderate-inflation and 11 high-inflation years.
This is a historical average, not a contractual return or a forecast. A year that fits the 2%–5% inflation range can still produce a gold loss, and the average does not tell you what happens during the exact months you need to sell.

The CPI relationship is weak over shorter or changing regimes
A separate World Gold Council analysis states: “For all the talk of gold as an inflation hedge, its relationship to changes in the US CPI is surprisingly poor (Chart 2).” It reports that, since 1971, changes in CPI inflation explained only 16% of the variation in gold prices. The same analysis notes that the combination of strong gold returns and high inflation in the 1970s and early 1980s was not repeated in the same way later.
Gold can respond to real interest rates, currency movements, investment demand, central-bank activity, geopolitical risk, liquidity conditions and expectations about future policy. Those drivers can overwhelm a contemporaneous CPI reading. Consequently, gold may rise before inflation appears, remain flat during an inflationary month, or fall while CPI is still increasing.
Compare the two assets by the risk you actually want to hedge
Hedging realized US consumer inflation
TIPS are the closer fit because the principal formula references CPI-U and the maturity payment includes an original-principal floor. The match is not perfect: CPI-U is a national index, and the value of a TIPS sold early depends on market pricing rather than simply the index adjustment.

Gold can preserve or increase purchasing power over long historical windows, but its lack of a CPI formula makes the timing uncertain. If a bill is due in two years and your concern is a specific increase in US consumer prices, gold’s historical averages do not provide the same defined linkage as a TIPS maturity.
Hedging an inflation surprise before it is fully measured
Neither asset is a guaranteed day-to-day hedge. TIPS prices can move when real yields change, even if current CPI is rising. Gold can react quickly to expectations, currency concerns or policy uncertainty, but those reactions can be positive or negative and are not tied one-for-one to the next CPI release.
Protecting against currency or institutional stress
Gold is often considered for risks broader than consumer inflation, such as loss of confidence in a currency or financial system. The cited evidence establishes gold’s historical behavior and diversification potential, but it does not quantify protection in a particular crisis. TIPS are obligations of the US Treasury and are designed around CPI-U; they are not a general-purpose hedge against every political, sovereign or market event.
Generating cash income
TIPS provide a fixed coupon rate paid twice a year, with the dollar amount calculated on inflation-adjusted principal. Gold provides no contractual coupon in the cited material. An investor needing scheduled interest therefore has a feature in TIPS that gold does not supply by contract.
Managing a known maturity date
A TIPS issue with a maturity near your liability date can make planning more direct, provided you accept the issue’s real yield and hold through maturity. Gold has no scheduled redemption amount, so you must decide when to sell and accept whatever market price exists then.
Risks that can make the “obvious” choice wrong
Real-yield and duration risk in TIPS
Holding to maturity addresses the principal floor, but it does not eliminate the opportunity cost of locking in a particular real yield. Selling earlier exposes you to interest-rate and duration movements. A long-dated issue generally has more sensitivity to changes in real yields than a short-dated issue, all else equal. No current real-yield levels are provided, so no current maturity can be declared the best bargain.
Deflation changes the path, not the maturity floor
During deflation, outstanding principal can decline and coupon dollars can decline with it. At maturity, however, Treasury pays the greater of adjusted principal or original principal. That guarantee concerns the redemption amount at maturity, not interim account values or income stability during a deflationary period.

Gold’s volatility and sale-price risk
Gold has no principal floor and no maturity date. A buyer can experience a substantial loss if the sale occurs after a price decline, even if CPI has risen during the holding period. Physical ownership can also involve premiums, storage, insurance and selling spreads; the cited sources do not establish current premium levels, sellers or storage costs, so those expenses must be checked separately.
Basis risk: the index may not be your life
Both choices have basis risk, but of different kinds. TIPS track CPI-U rather than an individual’s exact consumption. Gold’s basis risk is broader: its price may be driven by factors unrelated to the inflation rate you are experiencing.
Tax timing and account placement
TIPS inflation adjustments are reported annually on Form 1099-OID under TreasuryDirect guidance, including before maturity. Gold’s tax treatment is not established in the cited material and can differ by instrument, account and jurisdiction. Compare after-tax outcomes with a qualified professional rather than assuming the two assets receive the same treatment.

If the money is tied to a dated liability
Start with the liability’s date and the inflation measure that matters. A TIPS maturity near that date can provide a defined Treasury redemption rule. Avoid treating a TIPS fund or an individual TIPS sold early as equivalent to holding an issue to maturity: market prices can change before redemption.
If you may need the money at any time
Liquidity needs raise the importance of market-price risk. Both assets can be worth less when sold, but TIPS additionally expose you to real-yield changes and gold exposes you to commodity-price volatility. Keep the emergency-liquidity portion of a plan separate from an inflation-hedging allocation so a forced sale does not determine the outcome.
If your horizon is many years
Long horizons give gold more opportunity to benefit from broad monetary and portfolio forces, but they do not turn its CPI relationship into a guarantee. Long-term TIPS can provide persistent CPI-U linkage while still experiencing interim price volatility. Diversification between the two can address different risks, but the appropriate mix depends on tolerance for losses, income needs and the role of each asset in the whole portfolio.

Do not extrapolate one CPI release or one year of gold performance. The World Gold Council’s 10% moderate-inflation average covers a defined set of years through 2025, while its 16% explanatory-power statistic shows why gold’s month-to-month relationship can be weak. Use a written horizon and exit rule instead of buying solely because inflation has just accelerated.

Implementation checklists
Before buying an individual TIPS
- Define the date when the money may be needed and decide whether you can hold through maturity.
- Confirm the issue’s maturity, coupon rate, inflation-adjustment terms and quoted real yield through TreasuryDirect, a broker or a dealer.
- Estimate how CPI-U exposure relates to your actual spending; note major expenses that may behave differently.
- Model cash flow with principal rising and falling, because coupon dollars are calculated on adjusted principal.
- Check the account’s federal reporting and the Form 1099-OID treatment described by TreasuryDirect, then obtain personal tax advice if needed.
- If you might sell early, treat the purchase as a market-priced bond and assess potential loss from real-yield changes.
Before adding gold
- State the role explicitly: long-term purchasing-power diversification, crisis insurance or another objective—not a guaranteed CPI match.
- Choose the exposure form and verify its spread, premium, custody, storage and sale arrangements; those costs are not established by the cited historical studies.
- Set a holding period and a rebalancing or sale rule so a price spike or drop does not make the decision for you.
- Stress-test a period in which CPI rises while gold falls, because the World Gold Council reports only 16% of gold-price variation explained by CPI changes since 1971.
- Check the applicable tax rules for the specific account and gold instrument before investing.
Worked examples of the decision
Two-year college expense
An investor knows tuition will be paid in two years and wants a hedge against US consumer inflation. An individual TIPS issue maturing near the payment date offers a defined maturity rule, although selling before maturity would remove the floor. Gold could be higher or lower in two years regardless of the CPI path, so it is a less direct match for this liability.
Long-term portfolio diversification
An investor with a decade-plus horizon wants an asset that may behave differently from stocks and bonds during monetary stress. Gold can serve that diversifying role, with the acceptance that it pays no contractual coupon and can underperform inflation over an interim period. TIPS can add CPI-U-linked principal and semiannual interest, but their market value can fall when real yields rise.
Retirement spending that differs from CPI-U
A household facing unusually high medical or housing costs should compare its budget with CPI-U before assuming TIPS perfectly hedge its experience. TIPS still provide the Treasury’s CPI-U adjustment; gold does not solve the mismatch automatically and introduces a separate market-price risk.

The cited material does not provide a current real-yield comparison, current gold spot price, bullion premium, matched-duration TIPS-versus-gold performance study, risk-adjusted return analysis or individualized tax result. The historical gold figures come from different World Gold Council analyses, periods and methods, so they should not be combined into a single forecast. They demonstrate that outcomes depend on the interval and metric, not that gold will repeat a particular return.
For a personal allocation, evaluate the specific TIPS issue or gold instrument, transaction costs, account location, tax status, liquidity requirement and spending pattern. A financial or tax professional can apply those details; the mechanics and historical statistics above are not individualized investment advice.
Bottom line
Choose TIPS when your central requirement is a contractual, CPI-U-linked principal adjustment and a maturity floor that you can preserve by holding to maturity. Consider gold when you want a non-yielding asset with a long but uneven record of purchasing-power protection and potential diversification beyond measured CPI. Many portfolios can use both, but they should be assigned different jobs: TIPS for defined inflation-linked liabilities, gold for broader diversification and stress scenarios where uncertain timing is acceptable.
