A shared market reference informs local quotes; what a buyer pays or a seller receives can differ because of the product, dealer premium, applicable tax, fees, and transaction terms. To compare cities fairly, compare the same product and fine-gold amount at the same time, then include all costs and the dealer’s buyback offer.
Why gold prices can look different from city to city
CME Group describes its standard gold futures contract as a global gold pricing benchmark, quoted in U.S. dollars per troy ounce. That benchmark is useful market context, not a promise that every coin, bar, or dealer quote will equal the futures price. A physical product’s retail price includes additional factors.

The U.S. Mint explains that its bullion coins are sold at the prevailing precious-metal market price plus a premium for minting, distribution, and marketing. Dealers set retail offers and buyback bids, while sales-tax treatment, payment charges, shipping, and insurance can also change the final transaction amount. Those costs can vary among sellers and locations even when they use the same market reference.
A city guide displayed a quote of $4,171.50 per troy ounce at 1:16 a.m. ET on September 30, 2026. That is a dated historical snapshot, not a current quote for October 2026, and it does not establish comparable prices among cities. City pricing guide

What a city comparison can—and cannot—show
New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Houston are useful examples of markets where consumers may encounter different sellers and tax situations. The available information does not establish comparable live dealer quotes for these cities, so it cannot support a reliable city-by-city dollar ranking. A meaningful comparison records the same variables for each offer:

Local price differences are therefore better understood as differences in the all-in offer and resale terms—not as separate city gold benchmarks.

How to compare physical gold offers
- Set the reference. Record the benchmark, its unit, the quoted value, and the observation time. Do not treat an old city-guide quote as a live market price.
- Match the product and gold content. Identify the exact coin or bar and its fine-gold amount. A one-ounce coin and a tenth-ounce coin are not interchangeable comparisons just because both are gold.
- Calculate the premium. Compare the dealer’s product price with the metal reference for the same quantity. Premiums differ by product and seller.
- Calculate the checkout total. Add any applicable sales tax, payment surcharge, shipping, and insurance. Confirm the rules for the specific product and location rather than assuming all gold is taxed alike.
- Ask for the buyback bid. Find out what the seller would pay for the same product. The gap between the purchase price and buyback bid reveals a cost that the advertised retail price alone does not show.
- Keep terms aligned. Compare the same quantity, payment method, delivery terms, and quote time across local and online offers.
Tax treatment depends on the product and location
Tax treatment may differ for investment-grade bullion, jewelry, and scrap, and state rules can depend on product definitions or transaction thresholds. American Eagle Gold Bullion Coins are offered in one-ounce, one-half-ounce, one-quarter-ounce, and one-tenth-ounce sizes. The Mint says it distributes bullion coins through authorized purchasers rather than selling them directly to the public. The coins are a useful example of why product size and dealer terms matter; their official status does not establish that a particular seller has the lowest price.
