Gold spot-price snapshots on Oct. 2, 2026, were near $4,140 per troy ounce, but there was no single quote that represented every moment of the day. Physical coins and bars cost more than spot, so the best place to buy depends on the exact product, its all-in price and the seller’s terms.
What was the price of gold on Oct. 2, 2026?
These U.S.-dollar spot quotes were reported at different times on Oct. 2. They are separate snapshots, not a synthesized average or a universal daily close.

The available sources do not establish one comparable official closing benchmark for every market and location. A quote’s timestamp and price type matter: a spot benchmark is not necessarily the retail price a buyer will pay.

Why another live quote may differ
Prices move, and sources may update at different times or show different measures. For example, the Perth Mint’s live page separates Australian-dollar and U.S.-dollar bid and ask prices. It says live figures update every five minutes while the market is open, and warns that displayed retail prices are indicative and can change. That retail quote should not be compared as if it were the same measure as a U.S. spot quote.

Where to buy physical gold
Physical bullion is commonly sold as coins or bars. On Oct. 2, FindBullionPrices’ comparison included coin examples from APMEX, SD Bullion and Bullion Exchanges, and bar examples from MintBuilder and Bullion Exchanges. CNBC Select’s Oct. 1, 2026 article also names APMEX and JM Bullion as online bullion sellers and notes that gold coins may be sourced from retailers such as Costco and Walmart. Those listings are places to begin checking, not confirmation of Oct. 2 stock or prices, and not endorsements.

How to compare gold sellers
Match the product and weight
Compare equivalent weights and product types. A specific coin, a random-year coin and a secondary-market bar are not automatically interchangeable offers. Check the listing details before judging one price against another.
Compare the full price, not spot alone
Spot is a benchmark, not the usual checkout price for physical bullion. Coins and bars carry premiums for minting, distribution and dealer margin, as Kitco explains. Compare the total amount due for the same type and weight of gold, rather than selecting a seller based on a spot quote.

Check timing and transaction terms
Dealer quotes can move. The Perth Mint says its posted prices are indicative and finalized at transaction time. Before placing an order, confirm the current price, availability, shipping and payment terms, and any buyback terms with the seller.
Consider how you would sell
Physical gold is not immediately convertible to cash: as CNBC Select notes, an owner needs to find a dealer willing to buy it. Consider the likely resale route alongside the purchase price.
