A dealer’s selling price may be above the market’s spot reference, and its buyback offer may be below it. Gold prices can also fall sharply, and gold pays no regular income. This guide explains the practical trade-offs and, in a clearly U.S.-specific section, the federal tax treatment described by IRS Publication 550 (2025).
What does investing in gold mean?
“Investing in gold” can mean owning a particular coin or bar, paying a provider to hold metal for you, or buying a financial product whose value is linked to gold. Those are not interchangeable forms of ownership. With physical bullion, you acquire a tangible product and must decide how to store and later sell it. With vaulted gold, the arrangement depends on the provider’s custody records and the terms for withdrawal or delivery. With a market-traded product, you buy and sell through the financial market under that product’s rules; you should not assume that holding it is the same as possessing a specific coin or bar.

The World Gold Council identifies sovereign-mint bullion coins, small bars, vaulted-gold products, and numismatic coins as retail formats. A numismatic coin may carry value associated with scarcity, design, age, or popularity in addition to its metal content. That extra appeal can also mean a higher price, and it does not establish that the coin will be easy to resell at the same premium.
Before choosing a format, decide whether you want physical possession, professional custody, or market-traded exposure. Then examine the product’s costs, how ownership is documented, what it takes to access or sell it, and what you would receive after fees. There is no universally best format: the right comparison depends on the terms of the specific product and the investor’s priorities.

How do gold prices and dealer costs affect what you pay?
The spot price is a reference price for physical metal for immediate delivery, not a guaranteed retail price for a particular coin or bar. The CFTC and FINRA explain that dealers typically sell above spot and buy back below it. The gap between the dealer’s selling and buyback prices is the spread. A purchase can therefore lose value on resale even if spot has not moved, because the buyer must first overcome that gap and any applicable fees.
Compare the full transaction rather than asking only whether a product is “close to spot.” The premium above spot, transaction charges, delivery, storage, insurance, and likely resale terms can all affect the result. Costs vary by product, size, dealer, and service arrangement; the available guidance does not establish a single premium or fee that applies across the market.
Checks to make before buying
- Ask for the complete price and an itemized list of fees, including any delivery, storage, or insurance charges.
- Ask for the dealer’s current buyback price and the conditions for accepting the product. Compare that offer with the purchase price to understand the spread before committing.
- Compare like with like: the same type and size of coin or bar, or the same custody and withdrawal terms for a vaulted product.
- Check the dealer’s history and complaints, read return terms, and confirm how the product will be verified if you later sell it. These checks are recommended in the CFTC/FINRA investor advisory.
- For coins, consider recognition, verification, and the resale market as well as the premium per ounce. For bars, compare those same practical factors with the price and size offered.
Where should you store physical gold?
Storage is a trade-off among custody, access, security, insurance, evidence of what is held, and recurring cost. Options described in retail guidance include keeping the metal yourself, using a rented bank or storage-provider box, and using a regularly audited professional vault. The best fit depends on how much access you need and what protections and documentation the particular arrangement actually provides.

| Option | Custody and access | Security, insurance, and records | Costs and conditions to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Self-storage | You retain possession and control of access. | You are responsible for protecting the metal and for understanding whether and how it is insured. Do not assume ordinary insurance covers it. | Compare the security measures and any insurance available to you. The guidance does not establish a standard fee or a standard insurance arrangement. |
| Rented bank or storage-provider box | The box is rented, but access is subject to the provider’s procedures and opening hours. | Confirm what the provider does and does not insure, what records it keeps, and what happens if access is disrupted. A rented box is not the same as an audited inventory of its contents. | Check rental charges, access rules, and insurance terms. Do not treat the provider’s security as a guarantee against loss. |
| Professional vault | A provider holds metal under a custody arrangement; delivery or withdrawal depends on the contract. | Ask how often the holdings are audited, what custody documentation you receive, and exactly what insurance covers. Professional vaulting may offer easier resale, insurance that is often included, and reduced exposure to theft or disaster, but none is guaranteed. | Compare recurring storage charges, insurance exclusions or limits, resale procedures, and delivery or withdrawal fees and conditions. |
For any third-party arrangement, read the actual custody and withdrawal terms rather than relying on a general description such as “allocated,” “insured,” or “audited.” Establish what records identify your interest, who is responsible for the metal, how audits are conducted, and how you would take delivery or transfer it. Also ask whether selling through the provider is optional or required and what charges apply.
The CFTC/FINRA advisory specifically warns investors to examine storage and insurance charges. If gold is held through a self-directed IRA, the metal must be held by the IRA trustee or custodian; do not treat personal possession as equivalent to that custody arrangement. Account eligibility and tax consequences depend on the applicable rules and the account’s details.
How easy is it to sell gold?
Gold trades through multiple channels, including over-the-counter markets, futures, and physically backed exchange-traded products. That broad market activity supports liquidity at the market level, but it does not mean every retail investor can sell a particular coin or bar instantly, at spot, or without deductions. A retail resale is a separate transaction with a buyer, a product check, and terms that determine the net amount received.

For a physical item, identify prospective buyers before purchase and ask what they will pay for that exact product, how they verify it, and whether shipping or other fees reduce the proceeds. Product recognition and demand may influence how straightforward a transaction is. A dealer’s bid below spot, verification requirements, fees, and shipping can all change the final amount. Do not use an old market-volume estimate as proof of current retail resale conditions: historical volume figures reported in past commodity-market research are not current data for a particular coin or seller.
For vaulted holdings, confirm whether the provider offers a sale or whether you must arrange one elsewhere, how quickly a withdrawal or transfer can occur, and whether fees or minimums apply. For a market-traded product, understand its own trading and settlement process and its relationship to the underlying gold. The market liquidity of gold itself does not answer those product-specific questions.
How is gold taxed when you sell it?
U.S. federal treatment described in IRS Publication 550 (2025)
This section is limited to U.S. federal tax rules. It is not a statement of how gold is taxed in other countries, and it does not cover state or local taxes. IRS Publication 550 (2025) includes gain or loss from the sale or trade of gold bullion held for more than one year among collectibles gain or loss. For qualifying net long-term collectibles gain, the maximum capital-gain rate is 28%. That is a maximum rate, not a flat tax on every gold sale: the publication explains that if the regular tax computation produces a lower tax, the lower computation applies.

The actual result depends on circumstances such as holding period, basis, account type, and the taxpayer’s overall position. A sale may not qualify for the long-term treatment described if the holding period is different, and a quoted maximum rate does not tell an individual what they will owe. Check the IRS publication and rules for the relevant tax year, and consult a qualified tax professional about your facts. This discussion does not establish treatment for retirement accounts, sales tax, or any non-U.S. jurisdiction.

Yes. Gold is not a low-volatility guarantee. In its 2026 edition, the World Gold Council describes gold’s potential diversification role as arising from behavior that differs from stocks and bonds—not from an assurance that its price will be stable. Its historical examples include returns close to a 30% gain in 2010 and close to a 30% loss in 2013. Those are approximate historical examples reported by the Council, not forecasts or a promise that gold will offset losses in a particular portfolio or market.

Gold also provides no regular income. An investor relying on it for a positive return depends on price appreciation, so a period of flat or falling prices can be a drawback even without a sale. The CFTC/FINRA advisory identifies factors that can influence prices, including inflation expectations, currency movements, and geopolitical events; none makes the direction of the next price move certain.

Physical bullion and futures do not carry the same risk
An unleveraged physical bullion purchase does not create the same mechanics as a leveraged futures position. The CFTC warns that futures leverage can make a relatively small price move produce losses larger than an investor expects. Do not apply futures risk mechanically to a cash purchase of a coin or bar, but do not assume physical ownership eliminates price risk, purchase premiums, storage expenses, or resale costs.
For any form of gold exposure, decide in advance what role it serves and how much loss or delay you can tolerate. A diversification rationale is not a guarantee of protection, and historical performance examples cannot determine what gold will do next.
