Gold ETFs vs. Gold Futures: Which Is Better for Long-Term Investors?

For most long-term investors who want listed exposure that follows bullion, a physical-gold trust is usually simpler than trading futures directly. That is not a universal winner. “Gold ETF” can describe a trust that holds bars, a fund that owns futures, or another derivative structure. Direct futures add leverage, daily margin, expiration, rolling and possible delivery. The right choice depends on the exposure you want, how much cash you can keep available, and whether you can manage an expiring contract.

Before comparing returns, identify the exact instrument. A bullion trust, a futures-based fund and a COMEX futures contract can all be described informally as “gold exposure,” but their costs, risks and day-to-day obligations are materially different.

Start with the structure, not the label

The phrase “gold ETF” is not precise enough for a long-term decision. A physical-bullion trust holds gold bars with a custodian and issues shares that are intended to reflect the value of that bullion, less trust expenses. A futures-based fund obtains exposure through futures contracts and may keep cash or other collateral. Buying a futures contract directly gives you a defined contract month, a standard contract size and a margin obligation.

Those structures can produce different results even when the spot price of gold moves in the same direction. A trust’s gold per share can decline gradually as it sells a small amount of bullion to pay expenses. A futures position is marked to market every day and may gain or lose from the relationship between expiring and later contracts. A direct contract also ends; an investor who does not want delivery must close or roll it before the broker’s deadline.

Three instruments that are often confused

Instrument What supports the exposure Main investor obligation Long-term considerations
Physical-gold trust Gold bullion held by a custodian; shares trade in a securities account. Pay the purchase price and normal trading costs; no futures margin call. Sponsor and operating expenses reduce net assets or the gold represented by each share; shares can trade at a premium or discount and may not equal personal ownership of bars.
Futures-based fund Futures contracts plus cash or other collateral, according to its prospectus. Buy and sell fund shares; the fund manages contract margin and rolls under its stated method. Fund expenses, trading costs and roll results can cause returns to differ from a spot-gold chart.
Direct gold futures A standardized exchange-traded contract for a specified delivery month. Post margin, meet daily variation-margin calls and close, roll or accept delivery before expiry. Leverage magnifies gains and losses; contract expiration, liquidity and delivery procedures require active oversight.

How a physical-gold trust works

A physical trust’s assets consist principally of custodied gold bullion. The trust issues shares through a securities market, and the share price is designed to follow the value of the gold held for shareholders, after expenses. This is exchange-traded access to bullion exposure, not the same thing as putting bars in your own safe or taking personal possession.

The Goldman Sachs trust filing cited for this comparison states that the trust does not and will not hold or trade commodity futures contracts regulated under the Commodity Exchange Act. That statement illustrates why a prospectus matters: two products with “gold” in their names can use entirely different assets.

Expenses reduce the bullion represented by a share

Trusts pay sponsor, custody, administration and other operating expenses. Those costs are generally reflected by reducing the trust’s net assets or the amount of gold attributable to each share. The iShares Gold Trust product page accessed October 13, 2026, listed a 0.25% sponsor fee. That figure is one product example, not a market-wide rate; fees and prospectus terms can change, so check the current filing before investing.

Your result also includes the bid-ask spread when you trade, any commission charged by your account provider and the difference between the traded share price and the trust’s underlying net asset value. A trust can therefore lag the spot price by more or less than its stated sponsor fee in a particular period.

What a trust does not provide

  • It does not make you the registered owner of a specific bar.
  • It does not remove market risk; the share value can fall when gold prices fall.
  • It does not guarantee an exact one-for-one match with a quoted spot price.
  • It does not automatically provide the same tax treatment as another gold product or as a futures contract.

How a futures-based gold fund works

A futures-based fund buys futures rather than storing a portfolio of bars. Its prospectus should identify which contracts it uses, how much collateral it holds, when it rolls and what limits apply. Some funds move from a nearer expiration into a later one on a schedule; the schedule and methodology are product-specific.

Why rolling can change returns

When a fund replaces an expiring contract, the later contract may cost more or less than the one being sold. In contango, later maturities are priced above nearer ones, so replacing a contract can create a negative roll effect even if spot gold is unchanged. In backwardation, later maturities are priced below nearer ones, which can produce a positive roll effect. Actual results also reflect the fund’s expenses, collateral income or losses, execution prices and tracking differences.

There is no sound rule that every futures fund underperforms bullion, or that every physical trust tracks perfectly. Compare the specific fund’s stated benchmark, expense ratio, collateral policy and roll method rather than assuming that its ticker or “ETF” label tells you how it will behave.

Questions to answer in a fund prospectus

  1. Does the fund own physical bars, futures, or a combination?
  2. Which exchange and contract months does it use?
  3. On what dates and under what rules does it roll?
  4. What are the management, brokerage and other operating expenses?
  5. How does it handle collateral and unusually large margin requirements?
  6. What tracking difference, premium or discount has the fund disclosed, and over what period?

How direct gold futures work

The cited U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filing describes a COMEX gold futures contract representing 100 troy ounces and providing for physical delivery at expiration. A contract’s notional value therefore changes with the gold price multiplied by 100 ounces. You do not pay that entire notional amount when opening the position; you deposit margin with your broker.

Margin is a performance bond, not a down payment

Margin lets you control a large notional position with less cash than an outright purchase would require. That creates leverage: a relatively small move in gold can produce a much larger percentage gain or loss on the money deposited. Exchanges and brokers set initial and maintenance requirements, and those requirements can change.

Futures are marked to market daily. If the contract moves against you, your account can be debited and you may have to provide additional cash to meet a variation-margin call. A long-term thesis does not protect you from a short-term margin deficit. If you cannot fund the call, the broker may liquidate the position under its agreement, potentially at an unfavorable price.

Expiration and delivery

Because the contract has a defined delivery month, a “buy and hold” approach is incomplete. Before the broker’s cutoff, a trader who does not intend to make or take delivery generally closes the position or transfers exposure to another contract month. The exact last-trading-day, first-notice-day and rollover procedures depend on the contract and broker. Missing a deadline can leave you exposed to delivery obligations or forced liquidation.

Physical delivery also involves approved facilities, warrants and procedures that are different from receiving a small retail bar. Investors who cannot or will not handle those arrangements should not assume that an expiring futures position will simply remain open.

Cost comparison over a long holding period

Long-term cost is more than a headline fee. Evaluate the expenses that continuously reduce exposure, the costs that occur when you trade and the costs created by the instrument’s mechanics.

Cost or drag Physical trust Futures-based fund Direct futures
Stated product expense Sponsor and trust operating expenses; one cited iShares example listed a 0.25% sponsor fee as of October 13, 2026. Fund expense ratio and other operating costs stated in its prospectus. No fund expense ratio, but brokerage, exchange and account costs apply.
Trading cost Bid-ask spread and any securities commission. Share spread, commission and the fund’s own trading costs. Commission, exchange fees, spread and potentially higher costs during stressed markets.
Roll cost None from futures rolling because the trust holds bullion. Can be positive or negative; depends on the contract curve and roll method. Arises when you close one month and open another; prices, spreads and timing matter.
Financing or cash requirement Generally pay the full share purchase price, though an account could add separate borrowing. Fund maintains collateral; the shareholder does not receive a futures margin call directly. Margin supports the notional position; daily variation margin can require additional cash.

For a multi-year holding, even a small recurring expense compounds through the amount of exposure you retain. Conversely, a low stated fee does not guarantee a better result if roll losses, wide spreads or tracking differences are larger. Compare like with like: a trust’s fee against its actual net-asset-value performance, and a futures product against the futures benchmark and roll policy it declares.

Risk, liquidity and operational workload

Exposure and leverage

A trust share normally gives unleveraged market exposure unless you separately borrow. A futures contract embeds leverage because the margin deposit is only a fraction of notional value. Leverage is useful to a participant who deliberately manages risk, but it can turn a tolerable long-term price decline into an immediate account shortfall.

Liquidity and execution

All three instruments can trade at prices that differ from an ideal reference price. A trust or fund can trade at a premium or discount to net asset value, particularly when markets are stressed. Futures can show wider spreads or less favorable fills around contract transitions or volatile sessions. Use limit orders where appropriate, understand the trading hours of the venue and avoid sizing a position so large that normal execution becomes difficult.

Operational burden

Holding trust or fund shares mainly involves selecting a product, placing a securities trade and monitoring its disclosures. Direct futures require a written plan for margin, daily settlement, contract month, roll timing, delivery notices and emergency cash. That workload is a suitability issue, not merely an inconvenience.

Which choice fits which long-term investor?

A physical trust may fit when

  • You want listed exposure linked to bullion through an ordinary securities account.
  • You do not want to manage futures expiry or daily variation-margin calls.
  • You accept custody through a trust and recurring sponsor expenses.
  • You are prepared for tracking differences, spreads and possible premiums or discounts.

A futures-based fund may fit when

  • You specifically want futures-based exposure but prefer fund-share administration.
  • You have reviewed the fund’s contract selection, collateral and roll methodology.
  • You understand that contango, backwardation and trading costs can change results relative to spot gold.
  • You are comfortable with the fund’s expense ratio and disclosure of tracking risk.

Direct futures may fit when

  • You need contract-level exposure and understand the 100-troy-ounce unit described in the cited COMEX filing.
  • You can monitor the position frequently and maintain cash above the broker’s margin requirement.
  • You have a documented plan for daily losses, rolling and delivery avoidance or acceptance.
  • You accept that margin rules may change and that a broker can liquidate a position if requirements are not met.

A practical selection checklist

  1. Define the exposure. Decide whether your objective is bullion value, a futures index, or a specific contract month. Do not proceed until the product’s prospectus or contract specification confirms the answer.
  2. Measure the full cost. Record the sponsor or management fee, spread, commission, custody and other stated expenses. For futures exposure, add expected roll costs and the cash opportunity cost of collateral.
  3. Stress the downside. For a trust or fund, model a substantial gold-price decline without assuming you can exit at the last quoted price. For futures, calculate the dollar impact of a one-dollar move per ounce multiplied by 100 ounces, then test whether your available cash can meet several consecutive margin calls.
  4. Check the operations. Identify the account type, trading permissions, delivery notices, last-trading-day rules and the broker’s liquidation policy. Write the rollover date on a calendar rather than relying on memory.
  5. Review tracking evidence. Compare a trust’s share performance with its stated bullion reference, or a futures fund’s performance with its declared futures benchmark, over the exact period you plan to hold. Look for premiums, discounts, roll effects and expense deductions.
  6. Separate tax questions. Tax treatment depends on the instrument, account, investor and jurisdiction. Obtain current professional advice and read the product’s tax disclosures instead of applying a general rule to every gold vehicle.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Assuming every gold ETF owns bars

Read the holdings and strategy section. A product using futures can behave differently from a bullion trust even when both are exchange-traded funds.

Comparing a futures contract with a spot chart only

A futures position has a contract month, daily settlement and possible roll or delivery effects. The relevant comparison is the realized futures return after those mechanics, not an unadjusted spot line.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using maximum available leverage

Broker-approved margin is not a recommendation for position size. Keep enough liquidity for adverse daily moves and requirement changes; otherwise a long-term idea can be closed for short-term reasons.

Ignoring the broker’s expiry timetable

Confirm first-notice and last-trading-day procedures in writing. If you do not want delivery, close or roll before the broker’s stated deadline.

Treating one fee as a permanent market fact

The 0.25% sponsor fee cited above belongs to one iShares product page accessed October 13, 2026. Fees, margin levels, contract terms and product availability can change. Recheck current disclosures immediately before trading.

Bottom line for a long-term decision

There is no universal winner between gold ETFs and gold futures. For an investor seeking a relatively straightforward, listed link to bullion, a physical-gold trust generally avoids futures margin, expiry and delivery management, while still carrying custody, sponsor-fee and tracking considerations. A futures-based fund can be appropriate when its contract and roll methodology match the objective. Direct futures are a specialized tool for investors who need contract-level exposure and can actively manage leverage, daily variation margin and expiration.
