Stray is built to be taken slowly: a cat pads through neon alleys, pauses to watch a city breathe, and turns small discoveries into the point of the journey. Then one trophy asks you to do the opposite. “I am Speed” requires finishing the entire game in less than two hours, turning a gentle adventure into a rehearsed route of dialogue skips, puzzle solutions and checkpoint decisions.
Why the first playthrough should not be your speed attempt
BlueTwelve Studio’s 2022 adventure, published by Annapurna Interactive for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, gets much of its appeal from uncertainty. You learn what the Zurks are, find out why the city is sealed off, meet its residents and notice environmental details because you are not yet sure where the next path leads.

That makes an initial run a poor candidate for a two-hour target. Exploration, collectible hunting and simply finding the correct doorway consume the time that the trophy treats as failure. A first playthrough is where the atmosphere works best; the timed run is where memory replaces curiosity.
The trophy guide at PlayStationTrophies.org describes Stray as an exploration game and recommends saving the speed attempt for a later run. That is practical advice, not a claim that the story itself is long. The problem is uncertainty: every pause to test a route, reread dialogue or search for a collectible adds seconds you cannot recover.

What “I am Speed” actually requires
The PlayStation trophy description is exact: “Complete the game in less than 2 hours.” It is a whole-game finish, not a chapter challenge, so the clock shapes every chapter from the opening escape to the finale.
The PlayStation trophy list contains 25 trophies: one platinum, seven gold, nine silver and eight bronze. The speed trophy is only one part of the list, which is why a normal platinum plan and a timed run pull in opposite directions.
- Exploration route: stop for memories, badges, music sheets and optional interactions.
- Speed route: follow the known objective path, solve only what blocks progress and keep moving through transitions.
- Platinum cleanup: use chapter select after completion to return for missed collectibles and chapter-specific trophies.
The platinum plan: two different kinds of play
PlayStationTrophies.org estimates roughly 10–12 hours for the platinum and recommends two playthroughs. Treat that figure as a guide estimate from 2022, not a guaranteed schedule: familiarity, missed collectibles and retry time can move the total in either direction.

Run one: learn the city
Play normally. Follow the story, understand each district and collect what you naturally encounter. You are building the information that makes the second run possible: which conversations are mandatory, which puzzle steps can be performed immediately and which corridors lead directly to the next objective.

Run two: route the known game
Start the timed attempt only after you can move through the chapters without searching. Pre-plan puzzle interactions, choose dialogue options quickly, avoid optional detours and use checkpoints intelligently when a mistake would cost more time than restarting.
Chapter select becomes available after completion, so missed collectibles do not require another full story run. That separation matters: trying to combine a first-time exploration route, every collectible and a sub-two-hour finish is a recipe for unnecessary restarts.

Dialogue and transitions
Read the story on the first run; on the speed attempt, advance required conversations as soon as the game permits. Loading transitions and scripted scenes cannot all be removed, but hesitation around them can.

Puzzles
Most lost time comes from solving familiar problems as if they were new. Memorize the order of switches, items and machines, then move directly between them. If you make a mistake, decide beforehand whether the nearest checkpoint or a full restart is faster.

Movement
Stray is not a conventional platformer with free jumping. Its movement is deliberately contextual: you look for the next valid perch, pipe or interaction prompt. The skill is recognizing that prompt early and approaching it cleanly, not forcing jumps the game does not support.
Checkpoint management
A near-perfect opening does not protect a run from a late error. Learn where the game autosaves, and practice the chapters that contain the most dangerous sequences separately through chapter select before committing to a full attempt.
Can Stray really be finished in under two hours?
Yes. Verified evidence on Speedrun.com includes a PS5 glitchless run recorded at 1:43:09, with 1:36:04 listed as the runner’s in-game time. Those are leaderboard-run figures from a 2023 run page, not a promise that a first-time player will match them.

Glitchless leaderboard categories may impose rules and timing conventions that differ from a casual trophy run, so do not assume a leaderboard time and the console’s trophy timer are measured identically.

PS4, PS5 and the feel of the attempt
The game and trophy list are available on both PS4 and PS5. The underlying route is the same, but loading behavior and controller feel can affect how forgiving a practice run feels. Pick one version and practice consistently rather than switching systems midway through your attempts; consistency makes checkpoint timing and movement cues easier to judge.
Is the platinum hard?
Mechanically, Stray is approachable. The platinum becomes demanding because it asks for different habits at once: patient observation for collectibles, precise knowledge of chapter objectives and a sustained sub-two-hour execution. It is better described as a planning and memory challenge than as a reflex-heavy action-game platinum.
That contrast is the appeal. The game invites you to stop and look around, then rewards a second visit in which every alley, conversation and puzzle has a place in a practiced line. Few trophy requirements transform the same short adventure so completely.
A practical checklist for the timed run
- Finish a relaxed story playthrough and learn every chapter’s objective chain.
- Use chapter select to clean up collectibles and chapter trophies separately.
- Practice puzzle orders and movement prompts until you no longer search for the next interaction.
- Begin a full attempt with optional exploration removed and dialogue advanced promptly.
- Restart chapters when an error costs more time than the nearest checkpoint can save.
- Keep the same platform and control setup for practice and the final attempt.
The result is an unusual platinum experience: a game remembered first as a quiet journey, then as a compact route you can perform from memory. That may be why Stray is the rare game many players speedrun not for a leaderboard, but for one beautifully unreasonable trophy.
