You do not need GOG Galaxy to play most GOG games. Choose Galaxy when you want automatic updates, cloud-save synchronization, achievements, multiplayer invitations, social activity and a single library. Choose GOG’s standalone offline installer when you value DRM-free control, dependable offline play, long-term archiving or a computer that should not depend on a launcher. For many players, the best answer is a hybrid: keep an offline copy for preservation and use Galaxy when its convenience features matter.
What the two installation methods actually are
GOG Galaxy is an optional desktop client for games in your GOG account. It provides a library interface, installs and launches games, and can manage client-supported services such as automatic updates, cloud saves, achievements, multiplayer invitations and cross-platform social activity. GOG describes Galaxy as a way to install and launch owned PC games across platforms while viewing friends’ achievements and play activity.

Direct installation means downloading the game’s standalone setup files from your GOG account and running them without the Galaxy application. On the game’s download page, GOG labels this route “DOWNLOAD OFFLINE BACKUP GAME INSTALLERS.” A title may have several installer parts, language packs, patches, downloadable content and bonus files. You download the pieces you own, then install locally.
These are two delivery methods for the same purchase, not two editions with different core graphics or performance. Galaxy adds management and online-service integration; the offline installer gives you the files needed to install the game independently.

| Archiving a purchase for future reinstalls | Offline installer | A local copy is not dependent on the client being available at the moment you reinstall. |
| Achievements, friends and multiplayer invitations | Galaxy, when supported by the game | These depend on Galaxy or the game’s online services. |
| Recovery after an account or service problem | Archived offline installer | Your local installer remains usable; keep proof of ownership and any required prerequisites as well. |
Why Galaxy is useful
Automatic installation and updates
Galaxy handles the routine work of finding the right files, installing a game and applying available patches. That is convenient if you regularly move between computers or own a large library. Instead of locating every installer component manually, you select the title in Galaxy and let the client assemble the installation.
Automatic updating is also a trade-off. It keeps a supported game current with bug fixes and compatibility changes, but it can replace a version you were intentionally preserving. If a particular mod setup or older patch matters to you, retain an offline installer before allowing a major update.
Cloud saves are convenient but not guaranteed
Galaxy can synchronize saves for games that implement and support the feature. Availability varies by title, so do not assume that every game in your library uploads saves. A game may have no cloud support, may synchronize only selected save locations, or may require its own online service for multiplayer data.

Cloud synchronization is a convenience layer, not a substitute for a personal backup. If you play on several machines, wait for Galaxy to finish uploading before closing the old machine and confirm that the new machine has downloaded the expected files.
Achievements, friends and invitations
Achievements and social activity are client-linked features. Galaxy can expose achievements, friends and multiplayer invitations when the specific game supports them. These services generally need an internet connection and may stop working while the core single-player game remains playable offline.

A single library view
Galaxy is useful when you want one searchable place for your GOG games and related activity. Its product page also presents cross-platform friends’ achievements and play activity, which can reduce the need to check each game separately. This organizational benefit is strongest for players with many titles or several computers.
What “DRM-free” means in practice
GOG’s Developer Docs define its DRM-free philosophy plainly: “games released on GOG can’t have any DRM/copy protection.” In practical terms, a compatible game should not require Galaxy authentication, the Galaxy client or a live internet connection merely to launch the core game.
DRM-free does not mean every feature is offline. Multiplayer, friends, leaderboards, cloud saves and other network functions can require internet access and may depend on a game-specific service. A title can therefore be fully playable as a local single-player installation while its online modes are unavailable without connectivity.
DRM-free also does not remove ordinary technical requirements. A game may still need a particular operating system, graphics driver, sound component, runtime library, controller driver or other redistributable. Those requirements are separate from copy protection. Record them with your archived installer so a future reinstall does not depend on remembering what was installed on an old computer.
Installing with GOG Galaxy
Galaxy’s labels can change as the client evolves, but the workflow follows the same pattern. Use an account that owns the game and allow enough disk space for both the download and the installed files.

- Install and open GOG Galaxy, then sign in to the GOG account that purchased the game.
- Open your library and select the title you want to install.
- Choose the install control, review the destination folder and confirm the language or optional components offered by the client.
- Let Galaxy download and install the game. Keep the client open if you want it to apply updates automatically.
- Open the game from Galaxy once, then check its settings for cloud saves, achievements or multiplayer options if those services are offered for that title.
- For a laptop or travel computer, launch the installed game once while online if the title needs an initial setup, then test the game with the computer disconnected before relying on it away from home.
If an update breaks a mod or introduces a compatibility problem, first disable automatic updating for that title if Galaxy provides that control. Keep a separate offline installer or backup of the previous working files; rolling back is available for supported games, but the exact rollback choices are title-dependent.

Download every component you own
- Sign in to your GOG account in a web browser and open the game’s library page.
- Choose “DOWNLOAD OFFLINE BACKUP GAME INSTALLERS.”
- Download every required setup file. Large games may be split into multiple parts; missing one part can make the installation fail.
- Download included patches, language files, owned downloadable content and bonus material that you want to preserve.
- Keep the files together in a clearly named folder until installation is complete.
Do not assume that a base-game installer contains DLC you bought separately. Check the download list against your account and record the language and edition for each file. If the account offers several patch versions, note which one you saved.
Run the installer
- Open the first setup file and choose an installation folder with enough free space.
- Follow the installer prompts and provide any requested administrator permission.
- If the game is divided into parts, keep the additional files in the location the installer expects and run them in the order specified by the installer.
- Install the game’s bundled redistributables or other prerequisites when offered, unless you already know the computer has a compatible version.
- Apply patches and install DLC after the base game, following the version order required by the files you downloaded.
- Launch the game directly from its executable or its Start-menu shortcut. No Galaxy sign-in is required for the DRM-free core game.
Keep the original installers after a successful setup. A working installation is not the same as an archive: an accidental deletion, drive failure or new computer can remove it, while the saved setup files let you reinstall without downloading again.
How to build a durable GOG archive
GOG Support provides the offline-installer route, and GOG has publicly emphasized that buyers can preserve their games themselves. In a July 14, 2026 report, GamesRadar quoted GOG’s statement: “Download the offline installer of any of your games on GOG, save it to a disc, and it’s yours forever.” The same statement said, “You don’t need a storefront’s permission to play what you bought.” Those assurances describe the preservation value of a local installer, not a promise that every future operating system will run every old game unchanged.
- Create a folder for each game using the title, edition and installer date.
- Place all installer parts, patches, DLC and bonus files for that title in the folder.
- Add a plain-text or printed note listing the installer version, language, owned DLC, required redistributables and any configuration steps you know are necessary.
- Store a copy on durable local storage. A second copy on another drive protects against a single-drive failure; recordable optical media is another option if you maintain hardware that can read it.
- Keep your GOG account information and purchase records separately. The files preserve the software, while the account records establish which content you own and help you retrieve updated downloads if needed.
- Periodically verify that the storage media can still be read. You do not have to reinstall every title, but a damaged archive discovered during an emergency is no archive at all.
There is no published general statistic for installer size, download speed, performance difference or Galaxy adoption. Choose storage based on the actual files in your account rather than an assumed average.

Using a hybrid workflow
A hybrid setup separates convenience from preservation. Download and store the offline installer when you acquire a game, then install or update through Galaxy on the computer where you want cloud saves, achievements or social features. If Galaxy is unavailable, you still have an independent installation path.
Keep in mind that Galaxy and an offline installation can maintain different save locations or versions. Decide which installation is your primary one, back up saves before switching, and avoid opening the same save set simultaneously from two versions until synchronization has completed. For a heavily modded game, preserve the exact installer and mod-compatible patch level before allowing Galaxy to update it.
Which method fits common situations?
You have dependable internet and want minimal maintenance
Galaxy is the practical default. It reduces manual file management and keeps supported titles patched. Review update controls for games whose mods or older versions matter.
You travel or regularly play without internet
Install from an offline backup and test the game disconnected. Galaxy’s client services will not be available offline, but a DRM-free core game should not require the client merely to launch.

You are building a long-term collection
Download the offline files for every owned title and preserve them independently of your everyday launcher. Use Galaxy only as an optional management layer.

You care about achievements or multiplayer invitations
Use Galaxy when the particular title supports those services. Confirm the game’s feature list rather than assuming that a GOG release includes every Galaxy function.
You have limited storage or several computers
Galaxy can save local space by making it easy to install only what you currently play, while an archive can live on separate storage. If you move between computers, maintain one documented archive rather than repeatedly downloading uncertain file sets.
Limitations and troubleshooting
The game will not launch offline
Confirm that you are launching the game’s executable, not a Galaxy shortcut, and that the first-run setup completed. Check for missing redistributables, permissions and compatibility settings. If the title’s failure concerns multiplayer or another online mode, internet access may be a genuine requirement for that feature even though single-player play is DRM-free.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →A save is missing on another computer
Check whether the game supports Galaxy cloud saves, whether synchronization finished on the original computer and whether the save folder is the one the game actually uses. Restore a local save backup before experimenting with conflicting cloud copies.
An update caused a problem
Stop further automatic updates, preserve the current files and consult the game’s available rollback choices. If you archived an offline installer, reinstall the known-good version and apply only patches compatible with your mods or operating system.
The installer reports missing files
Recheck that every installer part downloaded completely and remains in the expected folder. Compare file names and sizes with the entries shown in your GOG account, then download the missing component again. DLC and language packs may be separate downloads rather than corruption in the base installer.
Galaxy’s behavior or operating-system support has changed
Galaxy’s supported operating systems and feature set can change over time. Check GOG’s current support information before planning a new deployment. An offline archive reduces dependence on those changes, but it cannot guarantee that an older game will run on every future operating system without compatibility adjustments.
Bottom line
Choose GOG Galaxy for automated management and supported online conveniences; choose the offline installer for launcher-free control, reliable offline access and preservation. Keeping both is the safest long-term strategy: Galaxy serves your day-to-day library, while a documented offline archive protects the ability to reinstall and play the DRM-free core game independently.
