Choose another story-driven action game when you specifically prefer a different combat rhythm, a more linear or more open structure, a different tone, or a game that fits your platform and accessibility needs better. There is no universal winner; the right next game depends on the experience you want to have.
The short answer: match the game to the experience you want
God of War Ragnarök is a strong default for players who want one package that combines cinematic storytelling, exploration, and action. PlayStation describes Kratos and Atreus travelling through the Nine Realms, while the ESRB classifies the game as an action-adventure with battles against human-like and fantastical enemies. Atreus is not only a story companion: the official game description gives him archery and runic abilities, and the combat system is designed to be customized.

That combination makes Ragnarök a poor choice only when one of its central traits conflicts with your preferences. If you want stealth to be the main source of tension, a tightly linear drama, a substantially different tone, or a game on a platform that cannot run Ragnarök, another story-led action title may be a better next purchase. The decision should begin with your desired experience rather than with a blanket ranking.

What God of War Ragnarök offers
A character-led action-adventure
The story is organized around Kratos and Atreus rather than an interchangeable player-created hero. Their relationship is the central lens through which the journey is presented, so the game is best suited to players who value a continuing character arc and cinematic scenes alongside combat. If you are selecting a follow-up to another narrative game, ask whether you want that same kind of directed, character-focused storytelling or whether you would rather begin an entirely separate premise.

- Feel your journey through the Norse realms, made possible by immersive haptic feedback and adaptive trigger functionality.
- Take advantage of multidirectional 3D Audio; hear enemies approaching from any direction. (3D audio with stereo headphones (analog or USB))
- Bask in the beautiful worlds you travel through, brought to life by precise art direction and arresting attention to detail.
- Switch between full 4K resolution at a targeted 30 frames per second, or dynamic resolution upscaled to 4K at a targeted 60fps. (4K resolution requires a compatible 4K TV or display)
Exploration across the Nine Realms
Ragnarök uses the Nine Realms as its setting. That gives the adventure a realm-based structure: exploration is tied to distinct mythic locations and to the movement of the story through those places. This is different from judging a game solely by map size. The useful question is whether you enjoy discovering connected areas and returning to places as the adventure develops, rather than whether a game advertises itself as open world or linear.
Customizable combat with two active heroes
The official descriptions emphasize customizable combat. Kratos supplies the primary close-range action, while Atreus contributes archery and runic abilities. The result is a system in which equipment or ability choices can be adjusted to support different approaches instead of forcing every player into one fixed build. Human-like and fantastical enemies provide the encounter variety identified in the ESRB entry.
When comparing another game, do not reduce this to “action” versus “no action.” Identify what you actually do during a typical encounter: stay in melee range, manage abilities and cooldowns, use stealth, control companions, or combine several of those actions. A game with a different emphasis may be a better match even if it also has a cinematic story.

Accessibility is a meaningful reason to favor Ragnarök. PlayStation’s game page lists accessibility features, and a 2022 PlayStation Blog announcement from Santa Monica Studio reported “60-plus accessibility options” and described Navigation Assist. Treat that count as a figure from the announcement, not as a guarantee that every current edition exposes an identical menu: settings can vary by platform, version, and later updates. Before buying, open the accessibility section for the exact edition you intend to use and confirm that the controls, visual aids, audio options, and navigation assistance you need are present.
Platform and edition checks before you choose
PlayStation versions
PlayStation’s official game page lists Ragnarök for PS5 and PS4. A PS5 owner should therefore check that the listing is the PS5 edition or clearly explains any upgrade path. A PS4 owner should confirm that the product is the PS4 version rather than assuming a PS5-only listing will run on older hardware.
PC availability
PlayStation Blog announced a PC version and described post-launch content included with that release. The announcement establishes that a PC edition exists, but it does not establish a single hardware requirement, performance level, regional price, or current storefront stock for every reader. Use the current PC product page for your region to verify operating-system requirements, graphics hardware requirements, storage, controller support, and the exact included content.
Rank #2
Use the edition you can actually play
A recommendation is not useful if the game is unavailable on your hardware. Before comparing story or combat, write down the platform you will use, then check the official listing for that platform. Confirm the edition name, language options, accessibility settings, and whether your account region can purchase and download it. Do the same for every alternative; a highly appealing game that requires hardware you do not own is not a practical next game.
Six comparison axes for any other story-driven action game
1. Combat emphasis
Start with the moment-to-moment action. Ragnarök is built around action-adventure combat, Kratos’s close-range attacks, Atreus’s archery and runic abilities, and customization. An alternative may put its weight elsewhere, such as stealth, ranged positioning, tactical commands, or a simpler action loop. Neither approach is automatically better.
Ask these questions before choosing:
- Do you want to be in the center of fights most of the time, as Ragnarök’s melee-led design encourages?
- Do you enjoy changing equipment or abilities to make a build, or would you prefer a fixed set of tools?
- Should a companion actively contribute to encounters, or would you rather control one character alone?
- Are you looking for frequent fights against both human-like and fantastical enemies, or a game where combat is occasional?
Read the candidate’s official gameplay description and look for concrete verbs rather than broad labels. “Action” can describe very different experiences. If the description does not explain the combat loop clearly, treat that uncertainty as a reason to watch an official gameplay video or consult the platform’s feature list before purchasing.
2. World structure
Ragnarök presents the Nine Realms as its exploration framework. Another story game may use a mostly linear sequence, a single open region, several hub areas, or a chapter-based structure. Choose according to how you like to spend time between major story scenes.
- Prefer realm-based exploration if you enjoy distinct areas tied to a larger journey and the possibility of revisiting locations as the story develops.
- Prefer a more linear structure if you want the narrative to control your route and keep the next objective obvious.
- Prefer a more open structure if you want to decide which activities or locations to tackle first, provided the candidate’s official description confirms that freedom.
Do not infer world structure from marketing language alone. Check whether the official listing actually describes open exploration, hubs, chapters, or a linear campaign. If a candidate’s structure is not documented, say so in your own decision rather than assuming it matches Ragnarök.
3. Narrative continuity
Ragnarök is a character-centered continuation built around Kratos and Atreus. That makes continuity a real purchase question. If you have played the preceding entry, the returning relationship and setting may be a major part of the appeal. If you have not, decide whether you are willing to learn an ongoing story through the game itself or whether you would rather begin with a self-contained premise.
Rank #3
- Those who break fate: Atreus seeks knowledge to help him understand the prophecy of "Loki" and what role he is to play in Ragnarök. Kratos must decide whether he will be chained by the fear of repeating his mistakes or break free of his past to be the father Atreus needs.
- Weapons of war : The Leviathan Axe, Blades of Chaos and Guardian Shield return alongside a host of new abilities for both Kratos and Atreus. As they take on gods and monsters from across the Nine Realms, Kratos's deadly Spartan skills will be tested like never before as he fights to protect his family.
- Explore the realms :Journey to dangerous and stunning landscapes and face a wide variety of enemy creatures, monsters and Norse gods as Kratos and Atreus search for answers and allies.

For another title, check whether it is a sequel, a spin-off, or a standalone story. Confirm which earlier games are essential, optional, or merely helpful. A game that requires several previous chapters may be less satisfying as an immediate next play than a self-contained alternative, even if its genre appears similar.
4. Tone and emotional register
Ragnarök combines mythic adventure, family conflict, danger, and large-scale action. Tone can matter as much as mechanics: two games can both be described as story-driven action titles while producing very different emotional experiences.
Before choosing, identify the mood you want for your next campaign. Do you want a serious character drama, a mythic adventure, a tense survival story, a lighter journey, or a story that frequently shifts between humor and danger? Use the official synopsis and rating information to check whether the candidate’s subject matter and intensity suit you. The ESRB entry for Ragnarök confirms action-adventure encounters; it should not be treated as a complete description of every other game’s tone.
5. Platform and accessibility
Platform is a hard requirement, while accessibility is a personal requirement. Ragnarök’s confirmed PlayStation versions and announced PC release make it broadly available across those ecosystems, but that does not mean every edition is identical. Other games may be limited to a particular console, PC storefront, or generation.
Compare the exact settings you need instead of counting features in the abstract. Check remappable controls, subtitle and caption behavior, visual contrast, camera options, difficulty assistance, navigation tools, and audio controls in the candidate’s official documentation. Ragnarök’s reported “60-plus accessibility options” shows the scale of its accessibility effort, but the number alone cannot tell you whether a specific setting is present or implemented in the way you require.
6. Purchase fit and current availability
Do not treat a recommendation as a price comparison when no current prices or regional stock have been verified. The practical purchase questions are simpler:

- Does the game have an edition for your console or PC?
- Is that edition currently listed in your region?
- Does the listing include the story or post-launch content you expect?
- Does it provide the accessibility options and language support you need?
- Can your hardware, storage, and controller setup run it?
For Ragnarök on PC, the PlayStation Blog announcement establishes that post-launch content was included with the PC release; the current product listing remains the authority for what your region receives. Apply the same discipline to every alternative rather than relying on an old article or an out-of-date store page.

Choose it for cinematic character continuity
Ragnarök is the clearest fit when your priority is following Kratos and Atreus through a large, directed adventure. The relationship gives the campaign a continuing narrative thread, while the Nine Realms provide the setting for exploration. This combination is more specific than simply wanting “a good story”: you are choosing a particular pair of protagonists and their ongoing journey.
Choose it for buildable action
If you want combat that can be customized rather than a single unchanging moveset, Ragnarök belongs near the top of your shortlist. Its official descriptions connect customization with Kratos’s combat and Atreus’s archery and runic abilities. You can therefore evaluate alternatives by asking whether they offer an equally meaningful way to adjust abilities, equipment, or encounter approach.
Choose it when accessibility settings are decisive
Players who rely on extensive options should inspect Ragnarök early rather than treating accessibility as an afterthought. The game page lists accessibility features, and the studio’s 2022 announcement reported more than 60 options, including Navigation Assist. Confirm the exact controls you need in the edition you will play, but this documented emphasis makes Ragnarök a sensible first candidate for an accessibility-led decision.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When another story-driven action game is the better next step
You want a different combat rhythm
If repeated close-range action is not what you are seeking, choose a game whose official description centers on your preferred alternative: stealth, ranged combat, tactical planning, or a lighter combat schedule. Do not select a title merely because it shares the words “action-adventure” with Ragnarök. Those words describe a broad category, not an identical feel.
You want a different world shape
Ragnarök’s realm-based journey may not satisfy someone who wants one uninterrupted open area or, conversely, someone who wants a tightly controlled sequence of levels. Verify how the candidate handles exploration, optional objectives, and backtracking, then compare that structure with your own tolerance for wandering and repeated visits.
Best Value
You want a fresh narrative starting point
A standalone story can be the better choice when you do not want to catch up on an established character arc. A sequel can be preferable when continuity is exactly what you want. Make the choice consciously: the issue is not whether Ragnarök is understandable, but whether its returning characters and setting are the reason you are playing.
You need a different platform or setting profile
Hardware restrictions, regional listings, language support, and accessibility settings can outweigh every creative preference. If Ragnarök is unavailable on the system you use or lacks a required setting in your edition, another game is the correct recommendation regardless of its review reputation. Confirm those practical details before spending time comparing trailers or feature lists.
A five-minute decision process

What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Name the priority. Write one sentence such as “I want a character-led melee adventure,” “I want stealth to dominate,” or “I need extensive navigation assistance.” If you cannot name the priority, every game will sound similar.
- Set the platform boundary. Select PS5, PS4, or PC, then remove candidates that do not have a supported edition. For PC, check the current hardware and operating-system requirements on the regional listing.
- Check continuity. Mark each candidate as a continuation or a new starting point. Decide whether following an existing cast is a benefit or a burden for this play session.
- Compare the core loop. Read the official gameplay descriptions and identify the repeated actions: melee, archery, stealth, exploration, puzzle solving, or tactical control. Pick the game whose repeated actions match your stated priority.
- Audit accessibility. Open the settings or feature documentation for the exact edition. Verify the particular controls and assistance features you require; do not rely only on a headline count.
- Confirm the purchase listing. Check edition, region, included content, language, and current availability immediately before buying. Prices and stock can change, so an older recommendation cannot substitute for the live listing.
Common mistakes that lead to the wrong choice
Using “story-driven” as the only filter
Story-driven describes the importance of narrative, not the way a game plays. Ragnarök’s identity also depends on action combat, realm exploration, returning protagonists, and customization. Compare those ingredients rather than assuming every narrative action game will feel interchangeable.
Assuming a sequel has no continuity cost
Kratos and Atreus are central to Ragnarök. If you have not played the preceding story, read the official synopsis and decide whether you are comfortable entering an ongoing arc. If you want a completely fresh premise, select a standalone alternative instead of treating continuity as irrelevant.
Comparing accessibility by a single number
The “60-plus accessibility options” figure comes from a 2022 studio announcement. It signals a substantial accessibility effort, but it does not answer whether the current edition includes the exact setting you need. Verify the individual feature and the platform version.
Buying the wrong edition
PS5, PS4, and PC listings can have different requirements or included content. Check the platform label and edition name at checkout. On PC, also confirm that your hardware meets the current listing’s requirements; the existence of a PC release alone does not establish performance on every computer.
Expecting a universal “best” alternative
The available evidence supports category-based guidance, not a definitive ranking of one named competitor. The right alternative changes with combat preference, world structure, tone, continuity, platform, and accessibility. A recommendation that ignores one of those constraints is likely to be wrong for someone.
Final recommendation by priority
- Kratos and Atreus plus cinematic realm exploration: choose God of War Ragnarök.
- Customizable action with melee, archery, and runic abilities: start with Ragnarök, then compare candidates by their actual combat loop.
- A different mood or combat emphasis: choose an alternative whose official description explicitly matches that mood or emphasis.
- Strict hardware or regional limits: choose the supported edition that is currently available on your platform.
- Accessibility-led decision: inspect Ragnarök’s exact settings first, including the options listed for your edition, then compare specific features rather than headline counts.
The most reliable answer to “What should I play next?” is therefore conditional: Ragnarök is the best next game when its character-driven Norse action-adventure, realm exploration, customizable combat, and accessibility fit your priorities. Otherwise, use the same six comparison axes to select a story-led action game that solves the particular mismatch you have identified.
