To break Alfheim’s red vines in God of War (2018), throw the Leviathan Axe through the glowing knots that hold the growth together. When a barrier has several knots, line up a single throw that passes through all of them; hitting only one may remove just part of the growth or leave it intact.
How do I break the red vines in Alfheim?
- Find the glowing knots. Look across the red growth for its bright hearts or joints. These are the points the axe must cut.
- Check how the knots line up. Move around the barrier and adjust your view until the relevant centers fall along one throw path. Some vine groups require a single axe throw to pass through several knots together.
- Throw the Leviathan Axe through the aligned knots. If the growth remains, change position and try a different angle rather than repeatedly targeting only one knot.
There is no single standing position that works for every vine group in Alfheim. The geometry changes from puzzle to puzzle, so use the visible knot alignment as your guide.

How do I get past the vines in Break Into the Hive?
The “Break Into the Hive” sequence includes a group described by walkthroughs as nine red vine hearts. Treat it as an alignment puzzle: find a line through the required glowing centers and send the Leviathan Axe through them together. Aiming at one heart at a time may not clear the grouped barrier.
If the first angle does not work, reposition and inspect the full group again. The exact view depends on where you are in the room; the nine-heart description does not establish one universal camera position or throw sequence. Are light crystals and red vines solved the same way?
No. Red vines are cut with the Leviathan Axe; blue light crystals are activated with Atreus’s Light Arrows. During “The Light of Alfheim,” using a Light Arrow on a crystal powers it and can create a light bridge. If a bridge will not appear, aim an arrow at the crystal instead of throwing the axe at the vines.

What about the Ringed Temple tendrils and Nornir chest?
A nearby Ringed Temple courtyard puzzle uses a powered crystal and balcony bridge to reveal tendril joints; throw the axe through those joints to shrivel the growth. This is still an axe-and-joints solution, but the crystal and bridge are part of reaching or exposing the target.

The nearby Nornir chest is a separate optional challenge, not a requirement for clearing the hive vines. The Prima Games Chapter 4 walkthrough describes its three rune bells as a timed challenge, with about seven seconds to hit them all.

Why do the vines keep coming back?
If a throw removes only part of the barrier, the axe likely did not pass through every knot holding that section together. Reposition, trace a possible throw line across the glowing centers, and try again. If the puzzle is in a different room or you are dealing with a crystal bridge or Nornir chest, the mechanic may be different; Alfheim has several distinct vine and crystal puzzles.
If you cannot identify the target group, use the nearest landmark or a screenshot to distinguish it before following a room-specific route.
