Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →A shared correlation key gives realtime ingress and queued workers a common name for one player’s update history. On its own, it does not make reconnects safe: pair that identity with a connection generation and a sequence number, then reject stale work atomically when applying state. The application still owns duplicate handling, ordering, and the meaning of “present.”
What does one key across realtime and queues buy?
It tells a queued handler which history an event belongs to. For example, a bounded opaque key such as roomID:playerID:sessionID can identify the update stream for one player in one logical session. The key is a correlation scope, not an ordering guarantee or a presence verdict.

Keep mutable facts—online status, region, or server address—in event fields or state, not in the key. Avoid using only a player ID when multiple tabs or replacement connections could then share an ordering domain accidentally. Long, high-cardinality identifiers also add overhead to queue records, logs, indexes, and metrics.

A useful envelope carries the correlation key, room ID, player ID, connection generation, sequence number, event kind, and observation time. Each field answers a different question:

- Smart Home Master makes it easy to set up functional subnetwork (up to 3 SSIDs) for IoT devices and VPNs

- Correlation key: Which update history is this?
- Generation: Which incarnation of that connection or session is this?
- Sequence: Which update is newer within that generation?
- Observation time: When was the event observed, useful for latency and expiry calculations?
Timestamps are not a substitute for generation and sequence: clock differences or delayed delivery can make time alone an unreliable way to identify the newest valid update.
How should a presence writer reject stale reconnect work?
Treat transport transitions as inputs to the application’s presence state machine, not proof that a player is present or absent. When a replacement connection is declared, assign it a newer generation. A delayed disconnect from the old connection can then be rejected rather than marking the replacement offline.

- Define the logical lifetime. Decide whether transport recovery remains the same session. Retain its session identity only while the application treats it as the same logical lifetime; mint a new generation when the application declares a replacement.
- Allocate sequence numbers. Define one sequence allocator or a safe allocation strategy for events within a generation. If multiple producers allocate concurrently, they must not issue ambiguous or regressing sequence values.
- Compare at the state write. Reject an event from an older generation. For the current generation, reject any event whose sequence is less than or equal to the sequence already stored.
- Apply the comparison and update together. Serialize work for that key or use a conditional write so concurrent consumers cannot both pass the comparison and then overwrite state out of order.
The generation comparison protects against work from superseded connections; the sequence comparison protects ordering within the current generation. A key without these checks is only a name.

Which ordering scope should the key represent?
Choose the narrowest scope that covers the state one event can overwrite. A per-session key lets unrelated sessions proceed independently. Broader scopes serialize more work, but they do not remove the need to define what “newer” means.

| Scope | What it orders | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Per connection lifetime or session | One player’s history within that session | Supports independent sessions concurrently; requires correct generation lifecycle and sequence enforcement. |
| Room-wide | Potentially activity for multiple players in the room | May serialize more work than needed and still needs an ordering rule across players. Combined room snapshots may need their own room revision rule. |
| Global | Events across unrelated sessions | Creates a broader serialization point and reduces parallelism; use only when the business rule truly requires a total order. |
For ordinary player presence, order the history that can overwrite the same player. Do not infer that this also orders every room-level aggregate or snapshot.
What guarantees do queues and Pub/Sub provide?
Redis’s Go job-queue guide describes at-least-once processing, worker recovery, and retry controls. A handler can therefore see duplicate work; make applying the same event idempotent, for example by recording the latest accepted generation and sequence with the state.

Redis’s Go Pub/Sub guide describes at-most-once delivery: a subscriber offline when a message is published misses it. Use Pub/Sub for transient notifications, not as the durable record of presence. Keep durable state in keys or a Redis Stream when missed notifications must be recoverable.
Recommended Free Tools
For heavier handlers, the Pub/Sub guide recommends handing work to a worker pool, buffered job channel, or Redis Streams consumer group. Bound subscriber buffers: an unbounded buffer can exhaust process memory. The guide identifies sharded Pub/Sub as a Redis 7.0 feature.

Why might a room count be wrong after a reconnect storm?
A count mismatch can result when an older disconnect or heartbeat job applies after a newer reconnect, or when stale heartbeat work keeps an expired generation alive. A room-level gauge reveals the symptom, but not which event caused it or whether the application’s presence rules were correct.
Instrument the state transition itself: track rejected stale updates by room and operation, and the age of the oldest unapplied presence event. These diagnostics help distinguish delayed work from a state-application bug without treating a count discrepancy as proof of either.
How is presence ordering different from matchmaking?
A correlation key for presence does not determine who should be matched or how rooms are created. Redis’s matchmaking tutorial, dated March 25, 2026, demonstrates a different data model: sorted sets for queue order, hashes for player metadata, and JSON room-state keys with TTL. Its join example uses WATCH/MULTI optimistic locking to avoid double-matching players during concurrent joins. The sample’s 30-minute room TTL is a tutorial default, not a universal production recommendation.

Keep those responsibilities distinct from the generation-and-sequence checks that protect presence from stale reconnect events.
